Tripura Launches 'Saharsh' in All Govt., Govt-Aided Schools

  • In an effort to encourage social and emotional learning, the Tripura government introduced a special education programme titled 'Saharsh'.
  • The 'Saharsh' was launched in August 2022 in 40 schools of the state on a pilot basis. It was extended to all government and aided schools of the state now.
  • A similar programme, which was found to be effective in social and economic development in research studies of Harvard and Columbia Universities, is being contextualised with local realities of India before implementing in Tripura.

Union Minister Jitendra Singh Inaugurates National Genome Editing & Training Centre

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh inaugurated "National Genome Editing & Training Centre" at National Agri-food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) Mohali, Punjab. The Minister also, at the same time, inaugurated a 4-day International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security 2023: – iFANS.
  • "National Genome Editing & Training Centre" (NGETC) is a one-roof state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a national platform to cater to the regional needs to adapt different genome editing methods, including CRISPR-Cas9 mediated genome modification. It will also empower young researchers by providing them with training and guidance about its know-how and application in crops. In the current climatic scenario, improving crops for better nutrition and tolerance to the changing environmental condition is a significant challenge. Genome editing could be a promising technology that Indian research could adapt to offer the desired tailor-made traits in crops.
  • The International Conference on Food and Nutritional Security (iFANS-2023) will be jointly organized by the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI), Centre for Innovative and Applied Bioprocessing (CIAB), National Institute of Plant Biotechnology (NIPB), and International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) at NABI, Mohali.
  • The 4-day conference brainstormed how genome editing could enhance the country's food and nutritional security under changing climate in the country. The conference had multiple sessions with as many speakers from 15 different countries. They shared their experience through their contribution to plant sciences in the frontier areas of their research.

Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics Announces Launch of 7th YERC

  • Meghnad Desai Academy of Economics (MDAE) announced the launch of the seventh edition of Young Economics Research Competition (YERC) for final year undergraduate students of any discipline.
  • The YERC is open for final-year undergraduate students across India.
  • It is a national-level competition aims to give students the opportunity to master the art of writing a research paper. Students can participate in groups of two and have to select one topic from the five given topics and write a research paper on it. There are rewards worth Rs. 5 lakh for the winning participants and runner-ups.
  • MDAE was established as an institution of excellence to equip graduate students with applied skills to meet the needs of a new-age workplace.

Foreign Universities will Need UGC's Nod to Set Up Campuses in India

  • University Grants Commission's (UGC) Chairman M. Jagadesh Kumar said that foreign universities can set up their campuses in India but they will need the commission's nod to set up before doing so. The initial approval will be for 10 years.
  • UGC said that foreign varsities with campuses in the country will only be allowed to offer full-time programmes in physical mode and not online or distance learning.
  • These universities will have the freedom to devise their own admission process and fee structure.
  • The foreign varsities will also have to ensure that the quality of education imparted at their Indian campuses is on par with their main campus.

Twelve Government Schools Renamed after Famous Personalities

  • In order to give due honour to freedom fighters, martyred soldiers and eminent writers and make next generations aware about these personalities, AAP government in Punjab renamed 12 government schools after famous personalities.
  • The name of Government Primary Smart School Dhaula was changed to Ram Saroop Ankhi Government Primary Smart School Dhaula in district Barnala.
  • Similarly, the name of the Government Primary Harijan Basti Kot Fatta, district Bathinda was renamed to Shaheed Kartar Singh Sarabha Government Primary School. Government Primary School, Udham Singh Nagar Bathinda was renamed as Shaheed Udham Singh Government Primary School, Government Middle School Pohlomajra, district Fatehgarh Sahib was renamed as Shaheed Malkeet Singh Government Middle School.

Uttarakhand CM Launches No-internet Smart TVs for Smart Classrooms in Govt. Schools

  • Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, launched Sampark FLN TV and Sampark Science TV in an effort to transform government school classrooms into smart classrooms. With the help of the Sampark FLN TV, any television can be transformed into an interactive learning platform with preloaded courses that include tests, worksheets, and animated content.
  • It operates offline without the internet. Along with free entertainment, Sampark Foundation will offer these plug-and-play devices for no cost.
  • Sampark Smartshala is an initiative to promote education in the state through modern technology. It would reach out to nearly 11,000 schools in the state.
