With the aim of regulating the profession of dentistry in India, provide quality and affordable dental education, and make high quality oral healthcare more accessible, the Union Government is planning to make the National Exit Test (NExT-Dental) mandatory for dental graduates (BDS) to grant licence to practise dentistry, and for admission to post-graduate dental courses.
The Union Government introduced the National Dental Commission Bill, 2023 in Parliament on July 24. It was passed in the Lok Sabha on July 28, and is awaiting approval of the Rajya Sabha.I
According to the Bill, a common final-year undergraduate dental examination, to be known as the 'National Exit Test (Dental)' will be held for granting licence to practise dentistry and for enrolment in the 'State Register or the National Register'. The National Dental Commission will conduct the NExT (Dental), which will become operational within three years of the date of commencement of the Act.

IIT Kharagpur and TCS iON Join Hands to Launch Online Certificate Course on AI
IIT Kharagpur announced an exciting development in technical education. Through its national AI Hub – AI for Interdisciplinary Cyber Physical Systems (AI4ICPS), the institute launched a new certification course called 'Hands-on AI for the real-world applications (HAAI)' aiming to educate a whopping one lakh individuals about Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies.
The course was launched in collaboration with TCS iON, a strategic unit of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS).
Established under the aegis of DST, Government of India, AI4ICPS, has initiated this course as part of Nationally Educational Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). IIT Kharagpur's Director, Professor V. K. Tewari, spearheaded the development of the AI course which has been meticulously designed to meet the ever-growing demands of the AI industry as well as implement the recommendations of NEP 2020.
TCS iON was roped in as a platform and outreach partner for this certification programme. Through TCS iON, LMS platform services will be available, and massive outreach to educational institutions and other targeted audience in India will be possible.
Tamil Nadu Wins Best State Award for Organ and tissue Transplantation
Tamil Nadu received the award for the best State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO) from the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), on the occasion of the 13th Indian Organ Donation Day.
Health Minister Ma. Subramanian received the award from Union Health Minister Mansukh L. Mandaviya in New Delhi. Ministers of State (Health) Bharati Pravin Pawar and S.P. Singh Baghel, Tamil Nadu Health Secretary Gagandeep Singh Bedi and Member-Secretary of Transplant Authority of Tamil Nadu N. Gopalakrishnan were present on the occasion.
Since the inception of the deceased donor organ transplantation programme in Tamil Nadu in 2008, there have been 1,706 donors. A total of 786 hearts, 801 lungs, 1,566 livers, 3,047 kidneys, 37 pancreas, six small bowels, two stomachs and four hands have been transplanted. A total of 3,950 minor organs and tissues have been transplanted, according to official data.
Tamil Nadu has the highest number of government and private hospitals possessing organ retrieval licenses in the country.

Ministry of Education Launches Study in India Portal for International Students
Union Minister for Education, Dharmendra Pradhan and Union Minister for External Affairs S. Jaishankar jointly launched Study in India (SII) portal. The portal is a dedicated website to provide information about higher education institutions (HEIs) in India.
It will showcase the academic programmes in the HEIs covering undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral programmes as well courses in Indian Knowledge System (IKS) such as Yoga, Ayurveda, classical arts and more. The portal will have information about the academic facilities, research support and related information available in the institutes.
Students will be able to apply to more than one institute/course of their choice. It will be a one-stop spot for student registration, visa application process, choosing the desired courses and receiving offer letters from the institute. The programme will offer a streamlined and well-organised application process for international students seeking higher education opportunities in India.
Apart from the various ministers, ambassadors of more than 10 countries and students from Russia, Thailand, Japan, Ethiopia, Ecuador, Kazakhstan and the Republic of Korea who are currently studying in India were present at the event.
India's First 'MeitY' Chair on AI to be Set up at IIT Jodhpur
The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Jodhpur, marked its foundation day commemoration. The event featured Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary MeitY, Government of India, as the chief guest. R. Chidambaram, Chairman BoG, IIT Jodhpur, presided over the ceremony, and the welcome address was delivered by Professor Santanu Chaudhury, Director, IIT Jodhpur.
Alkesh Kumar Sharma, in a significant announcement, pledged to allocate Rs. 5 crore for the establishment of India's maiden 'MeitY Chair' on Artificial Intelligence (AI) at the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jodhpur.
This initiative marks a pivotal moment in advancing AI research and innovation in the country. The institute has received approval for a substantial amount of Rs. 155 crore to establish a cutting-edge programme focused on perception and cognitive engineering.

DSEU Launches Two Short-term Certificate Courses for ESDM Sector
Delhi Skills and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) launched two short-term certificate courses for the electronics system design and manufacturing (ESDM) sector in collaboration with Elios Healthcare. The certificate courses will be available from this academic session.
The courses are industry-aligned and grant National Skills Qualifications Framework (NSQF) levels 5 and 6. It includes 75 hours of theory classes at DSEU campus and a paid on-the-job training of 225 hours to enhance their employability. The courses will be conducted at DSEU Okhla 2 campus under the Centre of Excellence Agriculture (CoE Agri).
The certificate course in ESDM offers training in the areas such as ESDM, semiconductor, IC design, PCB design and fabrication, embedded systems and more.
IIT Roorkee Launches Professional Certification Programme in Product Management
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee collaborated with Imarticus Learning to introduce a professional certification programme in product management. The programme, as per IIT-R, is designed to equip existing product owners with skills and knowledge to become product leaders as well as aspiring professionals who wish to enter the field of product management.
The classes will be conducted online including live classes and campus immersion at IIT Roorkee. The classes will be taken by the faculty of IIT Roorkee and industry experts.
The programme focuses on developing skills including roadmap creation, execution, growth strategies, analytics and more. The students will get the opportunity to build their own products to gain practical experience and valuable insights for product improvement. The programme emphasises on collation of ideas, innovation and curates product-focused strategies to increase the return on investment on outcomes.
The participants will receive a certification from CEC, IIT Roorkee upon completion of the programme.

Indian Railways & IIT-Madras Ink MoU for 5G Test Bed
The Ministry of Railways and the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) signed a memorandum of understanding ((MoU) to establish the India 5G test bed at the Indian Railway Institute of Signal Engineering and Telecommunications (IRISET) in Secunderabad; the facility would be dedicated to the testing and development of 5G use cases for Indian Railways.
The MoU between IRISET and IIT-Madras aims to accelerate the indigenisation efforts of Indian Railways in the field of communications and create a testing facility for Indian Railways. The Indian Railways aims to leverage the potential of 5G technology to enhance its operational efficiency, passenger experience and overall safety. By simulating real-world scenarios, researchers and industry experts will explore innovative solutions to modernise various aspects of Railway communication and services.
The indigenous 5G solution and testbed has been developed jointly by IIT-Kanpur; Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering and Research (SAMEER) under MeitY; IIT-Bombay; Centre of Excellence in Wireless Technology (CEWiT), a society of IIT-Madras; and IIT-Madras, as part of the indigenous 5G testbed project funded by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to a consortium of eight institutes.
