This year's £1m QE Engineering Prize has been won by four Americans who played key roles in developing GPS.
The Americans Brad Parkinson, James Spilker Jr, Hugo Fruehauf, and Richard Schwartz were all present at the London ceremony held to announce the honour.
The Global Positioning System began as a military project but has since had a revolutionary impact on wider society, and now underpins hundreds of billions of dollars of economic activity.
GPS is made possible by a network of 24-plus spacecraft in orbit that transmit precise timing and positional information to receivers around the globe.

Aribam Syam Sharma to Return Padma Shri Award
Internationally acclaimed film-maker from Manipur, Aribam Syam Sharma, on Sunday announced that he would return his 2006 Padma Shri award — India's fourth highest civilian award — to "show solidarity" with the ongoing public protest against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
The bill, which seeks to grant Indian citizenship to non-Muslims from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh, has sparked massive protests in Manipur and the rest of the north-east.
Agitating groups in the NE claim that the legislation, which was passed by the Lok Sabha on January 8 and is awaiting approval of the Upper House, would encourage migration from neighbouring Bangladesh, thereby posing a threat to indigenous communities of the region.
