Bangladeshi Fahmida Azim won the Pulitzer Prize 2022

Bangladesh-born Fahmida Azim working for the Insider online magazine of the US has been selected for the Pulitzer Prize 2022. She will be awarded under the category of Illustrated Reporting and Commentary.
She is among the four journalists including Anthony Del Col, Josh Adams and Walt Hickey of Insider being published from New York, selected for their work on the Chinese oppression of the Uyghurs. The work 'I escaped a Chinese internment Camp' has illustrations by Fahmida Azim.

Liberty Medal 2022 to be awarded to Ukrainian President Zelenskyy

The Liberty Medal 2022 will be awarded this fall to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The National Constitution Center has announced that Zelenskyy will be honoured in a ceremony in October for what it called "his heroic defence of liberty in the face of Russian tyranny."
President Zelenskyy has bravely led the Ukrainian people in their defence of freedom against Russian tyranny, and his courage has inspired people around the world to defend liberal democracy and the rule of law.

Putin Revives 'Mother Heroine' Title, Announces Reward of Rs. 13L for Bearing 10 Kids

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree, reviving the Soviet-era war of "Mother Heroine" title as the country battles a demographic crisis fuelled by plunging birth rates.
The Russian President Putin signed an order that said women who bear and raise 10 or more children will be bestowed with Russia's 'Mother Heroine' title as an 'honour'.
They will also receive a one-time payment of 1 million rubles (approx Rs. 13 lakh) after the 10th living child turns one. The mothers will 'qualify' for the 'award' even if any of their children die in battle, as the result of a terrorist act or in an emergency situation.
This decree was first introduced in 1944 by Soviet leader Josef Stalin in the wake of massive population losses during World War II. The title stopped being awarded after the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 following the Cold War.

Indian Film Festival of Melbourne Awards

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne is currently underway, and one of the prominent highlights from the festival is its awards night. The IFFM is held every year in Australia and celebrates the Indian cinematic spirit by showcasing a wide range of shows, films and series from the country.
The IFFM Awards were announced. The show was hosted by popular TV actor Rithvik Dhanjiani and some of the biggest winners of the night award event included Ranveer Singh-starrer sports drama 83, and the acclaimed Amazon Prime series Mumbai Diaries 26/11.
Some of the winners are Best Film: 83, Best Director: Shoojit Sircar (Sardar Udham) and Aparna Sen (The Rapist), Best Actor: Ranveer Singh (83), Best Actress: Shefali Shah (Jalsa), Best Series: Mumbai Diaries 26/11.
The 13th edition of IFFM began on August 12 and will conclude on August 30. The in-person event will be done by August 20, post which the festival will go on virtually for additional ten days.

Marina Tabassum Becomes First South Asian to Win Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Lifetime Achieve...

Renowned Bangladeshi architect, researcher and educator Marina Tabassum became the first person from the global south and first south Asian to win the prestigious Lisbon Triennale Millennium bcp Lifetime Achievement Award. Announcing the award, the Lisbon Architecture Triennale jury praised Marina Tabassum for presenting an inspiring example of work with local communities that can have a positive impact across the globe even under the most adverse conditions.
The International Jury for the award said that Marina Tabssum's unique practice touches on the spiritual fundamentals of architecture. Driven by specific cultural and geographical context, her works address pressing contemporary issues, said the jury in their citation for the award. Her work shows how architects can challenge the climate crisis and bring about social change in an experimental, respectful and inspiring manner.
She will receive an original artwork by the Portuguese artist and sculptor Carlos Nogueira as award during the Lisbon Triennale which begins on 29 September in Lisbon, Portugal.

Congress MP Shashi Tharoor to Receive France's Highest Civilian Honour

Congress MP and wordsmith Shashi Tharoor received France's highest civilian honour, the Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur (the Legion of Honour), for his writings and speeches.
The French order of merit that was established in 1802 by Napoleon Bonaparte is awarded for excellent civil or military conduct.
In 2010, Tharoor had received a similar honour from the Spanish government, when the King of Spain had bestowed upon him the Encomienda de la Real Order Espanola de Carlos III.
Shashi Tharoor is a two-term Lok Sabha MP representing the Thiruvananthapuram constituency and Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs. He has previously served as Minister of State for Human Resource Development and Minister of State for External Affairs in the erstwhile UPA government.
