Lt Gen Mohanty is Next Army Vice-Chief

  • Southern Army Commander Lt Gen CP Mohanty has been appointed next Vice-Chief of the Indian Army.
  • He will take over from Lt General SK Saini after he superannuates on January 31. Lt Gen Mohanty has commanded the crucial 33 Corps in the eastern sector after the Doklam standoff.

JLL India CEO Ramesh Nair Steps Down

  • JLL India CEO Ramesh Nair is leaving the company to pursue opportunities outside the firm. He is succeeded by Radha Dhir, an experienced financial services executive, who has held senior leadership positions in Deutsche Bank India and Yes Bank.
  • Nair joined JLL as an analyst in 1999. He rose through the ranks to become Chief Operating Officer in 2013 and then CEO of the India business in 2017. He was also a member of the Asia Pacific Executive Board.
  • In India, JLL has presence across 10 major cities (Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Kochi and Coimbatore) and in over 130 tier 2 and 3 markets with a workforce of close to 12,000 professionals.

Renowned Oncologist Dr. V Shanta Passes Away

  • Padma Award-winning renowned oncologist Dr. V Shanta passed away. She was the chairperson of Adyar Cancer Institute in Chennai, which she joined in 1954. The institute is known for providing state-of-the-art healthcare to all patients.
  • Dr. V Shanta was a recipient of the prestigious Padma Shri (1986) and Padma Bhushan (2006) for her efforts for making quality and affordable cancer treatment accessible to everyone. She was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan and the Ramon Magsaysay awards.

Vishwavir Ahuja Re-appointed as RBL Bank Chief

  • The board of directors of RBL Bank approved the re-appointment of Vishwavir Ahuja as the Managing Director and CEO of the bank for three years.
  • The re-appointment is with effect from June 30, 2021, to June 29, 2024, and the same is being recommended to the Reserve Bank of India and shall be subject to their approval.
  • Ahuja has been MD & CEO of RBL Bank since June 30, 2010. Prior to joining RBL Bank, he was the MD & CEO of Bank of America, India, from 2001 to 2009.

Jyoti Kumai Becomes Brand Ambassador for Anti-drug Abuse Programme

  • The Bihar government has chosen "bicycle girl" Jyoti Kumari, who had pedalled 1,200 km from Gurugram to Darbhanga taking her injured father on the rear carrier during the nationwide lockdown, as the Brand Ambassador for an anti-drug abuse programme.
  • The state government has selected the 15-year-old "real life hero" to sharpen its campaign against the use of narcotic drugs and intoxicants by youths, Dayanidhan Pandey, Director, Social Security Directorate.
  •  Kumari will be propagating the central government's National Action Plan for Drug Demand Reduction (NAPDDR) for 2018-2025 in Bihar. The programme formulated by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment aims at reduction of adverse consequences of drug abuse through a multi-pronged strategy.

Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan Passes Away

  • Indian classical musician Ghulam Mustafa Khan has passed away. He was 89. Khan received several awards in his lifetime, most notable being the Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan. Born in Badayun, Uttar Pradesh, he came from a family of musicians.
  • Khan's last rites will be performed at Santacruze Kabrastan later this evening. Born on March 3, 1931 in Badaun in Uttar Pradesh, Khan was the eldest son in a family of four brothers and three sisters. His father, Ustad Waris Hussain Khan was the son of celebrated musician Ustad Murred Baksh, while his mother, Sabri Begum, was the daughter of Ustad Inayat Husain Khan, credited as the founder of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of music. Khan got his basic classical music training from his father and later studied music under his cousin, Ustad Nissar Hussain Khan.
  • He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1991, followed by Padma Bhusan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018. In 2003, he was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi award, the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artistes.

Former Union Minister Kamal Morarka Dies

  • Former Union Minister and businessman Kamal Mahavirprasad Morarka died in Mumbai following a heart attack. He was 74.
  • Morarka was incumbent president of Samajwadi Janata Party (Chandra Shekhar). He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1988. In November 1990, he was appointed a Minister of State in the Prime Minister's office during the tenure of Chandra Shekhar – his mentor — as PM. His uncle R R Morarka was also an MP in the third Lok Sabha (1962) from Jhunjhunu.
