Celebrated Architect BV Doshi Dies: "Pole Star in World of Architecture"

  • Well-known architect and Padma Bhushan recipient Balkrishna Doshi, who worked with legends like Le Corbusier and Louis Kahn, died at 95 at his home.
  • He worked with Louis Kahn as an associate to build the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, and many other acclaimed projects.
  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel called Doshi the Pole Star in the world of architecture.
  • Some of Doshi's projects include the Institute of Indology, CEPT University and Kanoria Centre for Arts in Ahmedabad, the Indian Institute of Management in Bangalore, and Aranya Low Cost Housing, a township for low- to middle-income families, in Indore which won the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995.
  • Doshi founded his own practice, Vastushilpa, in Ahmedabad in 1956.
  • In 2018, he received the Pritzker Architecture Prize, considered one of the most prestigious prizes in the field of architecture, becoming the first Indian architect to receive the honour.
  • He was received the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour in India, in 2020.
  • In 2022, Doshi received the 'Royal Gold Medal' from the Royal Institute of British Architects, which described his work as combining "pioneering modernism with vernacular, informed by a deep appreciation of the traditions of India's architecture, climate, local culture and craft".

Pepsi Ropes in Kannada Actor Yash as Brand Ambassador

  • Beverage brand Pepsi roped in Kannada actor Yash, who starred in blockbuster KGF as its brand ambassador.
  • Yash, who was seen in national blockbuster KGF Chapter 2, joined Salman Khan in endorsing brand Pepsi in India.
  • As per the company, the actor will be instrumental in deepening consumer connect of brand Pepsi as it expands its national footprint.
  • Yash will feature in Pepsi's new television campaigns in a new avatar that are set to take over traditional and digital platforms across the country.

Woman Becomes World's Oldest Living Person at 115

  • Guinness World Records (GWR) declared María Branyas Morera as the "world's oldest woman living and oldest person living" at the age of 115.
  • Morera is 115 years 321 days old, as of 19 January 2023. María Branyas Morera (USA/Spain) is now confirmed as the world's oldest woman living and oldest person living, following the death of 118-year-old Lucile Randon (France).
  • Morera was born in San Francisco, California, on 4 March 1907.

Jnanpith Awardee Nilmani Phookan Dies

  • Jnanpith awardee and eminent Assamese litterateur Nilmani Phookan died following prolonged old-age related problems. He was 90.
  • Phookan was among the foremost of the bright literary stars who have enriched Assamese literature.
  • Phookan received the Jnanpith award for the year 2021 for his overall contribution to the field of literature.
  • He is the third recipient of the Jnanpith award in Assam after Birendranath Bhattacharya and Mamoni (Indira) Raisom Goswami.
  • He received the Sahitya Akademi award in 1981 for his book of poems 'Kobita', the Padma Shri in 1990 and the Sahitya Akademi fellowship in 2002.

World's Oldest Person, Lucile Randon, Passes Away

  • The world's oldest known person, French nun Lucile Randon, died aged 118 in the city of Toulon.
  • The sister was recognised as the oldest European, before the death of Japan's Kane Tanaka aged 119 in 2022.
  • Lucile Randon, also known as Sister Andre, was born in 1904 in the French town of Ales. A born survivor, she lived through the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918 and two World Wars.
