International Conference on Defence Finance and Economics
Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh kicked off a three-day international conference on Defense Finance and Economics in New Delhi.
As per the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Defence (Finance) conference will provide a platform for eminent policymakers, academics and government officials from within and outside the country to share their insights and experiences on Defence Finance and Economics in the context of evolving security challenges and policies globally.
The conference will be attended by delegates from the United States, the United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Kenya, and aims to promote communication and collaboration among participants while also contributing to the country's defence readiness through optimal financial resources and effective defence budget implementation.
It intends to participate in global talks on defence finance and economics and present a long-term blueprint on the subject. It also targets to spread best practices, experiences and expertise from other countries, as well as to align procedures in the Indian context with worldwide standards.
The conference also facilitates collaborations with foreign governments, international institutions and global leaders in the domains of Defence Finance and Economics in order to support the government's ongoing efforts towards indigenisation and self-reliance in the defence sector, as well as to advance transformative reforms.

India hosted the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Young Authors' Conference in New Delhi on April 12-13.
The conference was part of the calendar of events drawn up by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, under the current Chairmanship of Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO).
The Ministry of Education, GoI organised the Young Authors' Conference with National Book Trust, India, an autonomous organisation, under the Ministry of Education, as the Implementing Agency.
The theme of the Conference was 'Civilizational Dialogue amongst the SCO member nations – Perspectives from Young Scholars', with the sub-themes of History and Philosophy, Economy, Religion, Culture, Literature and Science and Medicine.
Jagan Reddy Wealthiest, Only Mamata Not Crorepati
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy is the wealthiest Chief Minister of the country with a total of Rs. 510 crore assets, according to poll affidavits analysed by the Association for Democratic Reforms. Out of the 30 incumbent Chief Ministers, 29 are crorepatis with the only exception being West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with a total asset of Rs. 15 lakh.
The top three Chief Ministers in terms of assets are Andhra Pradesh's Jagan Mohan Reddy (over Rs. 510 crore), Arunanchal Pradesh's Pema Khandu (over Rs. 163 crore) and Odisha's Naveen Pattnaik (over Rs. 63 crore), according to the ADR.
The three CMs with the lowest declared assets are – West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee (over Rs. 15 lakh), Kerala's Pinarayi Vijayan (over Rs. 1 crore) and Haryana's Manohar Lal (over Rs. 1 crore).
India's Under-river Metro, Makes its First Run
In 1984, Kolkata created history by being the first city in the country where the Metro services were started. Thirty nine years later, the City of Joy created history again as the Kolkata Metro undertook its first maiden under-river journey through a tunnel under the Hooghly River from Mahakaran to Howrah.
Metro Rail's general manager P. Uday Kumar Reddy, along with other senior officials of the Metro Rail and the Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited, travelled from Mahakaran to Howrah Maidan station on rake no-613, which crossed Hooghly River.
Terming it as a historic event, the general manager of the Metro Rail said that trial runs on the 4.8 km section from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade will be conducted for seven months, after which the Metro service on this route will be made available to the public.

Faleiro Resigns from Rajya Sabha, Quits Trinamool
Trinamool Congress (TMC) Rajya Sabha member Luizinho Faleiro resigned from the Upper House and the party as well.
Trinamool Congress's (TMC) Rajya Sabha MP and former Goa Chief Minister Luizinho Faleiro has tendered his resignation from the Upper House of Parliament.
This came a day after the TMC lost its national party tag.
The seven-time MLA from Goa's Navelim seat, Faleiro was elected to the Rajya Sabha unopposed from Bengal ahead of the Goa Assembly elections last year (2022).
Former Goa CM Faleiro was reportedly asked by the TMC leadership to resign from the Rajya Sabha. Party supremo Mamata Banerjee was unhappy with him for refusing to contest the 2022 Goa elections from Fatorda against Goa Forward Party's Vijai Sardesai.

UIDAI - IIT Bombay join hands to develop touchless biometric capture system
Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has joined hands with Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-Bombay) to develop a robust touchless biometric capture system for easier usage by people anytime, anywhere.
As part of the memorandum of understanding, UIDAI and IIT Bombay will carry out joint research to build a mobile capture system for fingerprints along with liveness model integrated with the capture system.
The touchless biometric capture system, once developed and operational, will allow fingerprint authentication from home alike face authentication. The new system is expected to capture multiple fingerprints at one go and aid authentication success rate further. The new system once in place will be an addition to the existing facilities available in the Aadhaar ecosystem.

With the removal of NCP, CPI, and TMC, there are now only six national parties in the country – BJP, Congress, National People's Party, CPM, Bahujan Samaj Party and the latest addition AAP.
According to Election Commission rules, a party gets national status if it is recognized as a state party in four states. For recognition as a state party, it has to secure at least six percent of the valid votes polled and two seats each in Assembly or Lok Sabha polls.
The AAP got the status of a national party as it secured nearly 13 percent of the vote share and five seats in the Gujarat Assembly polls earlier this year making it the state party in four states—Delhi, Goa, Punjab and Gujarat.Reacting to his party getting the national party status, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: "National party in such a short time? This is nothing less than a miracle. Many congratulations to all. Crores of people of the country have taken us till here. People expect a lot from us. Today people have given us this huge responsibility. Lord, bless us so that we can fulfill this responsibility well"

Bangladesh, Japan and India to hold connectivity meet in Tripura
Asian Confluence, a think tank based out of North East India, in collaboration with India's foreign ministry, is organising the event. It will be attended by deputy foreign ministers of Bangladesh and India along with the chief minister of Tripura and the Japanese envoy to India, reports the Economic Times.
Japan is investing in Northeast India and Bangladesh including the deep sea port at Matarbari that will connect the landlocked region with the Bay of Bengal.
Asian Confluence recently conducted a studythat suggested both Northeast India andBangladesh need to scale up their multi-modal connectivity, which would not only help the region to raise its competitiveness but also narrow the development gaps in the region.

Centre Declares Tripura Best State in NE for E-procurement
Tripura was given the best state award in the north-eastern region by the Centre for successful implementation of e-procurement.
To maintain transparency, the state has made it mandatory to go for e-procurement if the value of any government purchase or contract goes beyond Rs. 25,000.
Except the pension to 82,000 pensioners, all the employees including Anganwadi workers are receiving salary through digital payment, said Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy.
South Korean Foreign Minister Visits India
South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin took a two-day visit to India with an aim to make "substantive progress" in the special strategic partnership between the two countries.
Jin held wide-ranging talks with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and also called on Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar.
Notably, India and South Korea have completed 50 years of diplomatic ties.
Anil Antony, Congress Veteran AK Antony's Son, Joins BJP
Anil Antony, the son of Congress leader and former Union Minister AK Antony, joined the BJP.
Anil Antony, who was a Congress leader from Kerala, quit the party in January following the row over BBC's documentary on the 2002 Gujarat riots and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
BJP leaders Piyush Goyal and V. Murlidharan and the party's Kerala unit chief K. Surendran welcomed the former Congress leader to their party at a formal event.
Anil Antony ran the Congress's social media cell in Kerala before he left the party.
