Paris 2024 Olympics: Mary Kom Handed Key Post by IOA; Sharath Kamal Named Flagbearer

  • Veteran table tennis star Sharath Kamal was named as India's flagbearer for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA).
  • Meanwhile, Olympic bronze medallist MC Mary Kom was named as India's Chef de Mission for Paris 2024 while Winter Olympian Shiva Keshavan was appointed as the Deputy Chef de Mission for Paris 2024.
  • At the Paris Olympics, India is hoping to overhaul their record tally of seven medals which they achieved at the deferred Tokyo Olympics last time around.

Nayana James Shines at Indian Open Jumps Competition

  • In the women's long jump event at the 3rd Indian Open Jumps Competition in Bengaluru, Karnataka Nayana James from Kerala recorded a personal best mark of 6.67 m to secure the gold medal.
  • Nayana's distance was 16 cm off Anju Bobby George's National record and 19 cm behind the Paris mark.
  • Nayana left the fancied Shaili Singh trailing, who could only manage 6.40 m.

WTT Feeder Series: Sathiyan Gnanasekaran Claims Historic Crown in Beirut

  • Sathiyan Gnanasekaran became the first-ever Indian paddler to lift a men's singles trophy at a WTT Feeder Series event, beating compatriot Manav Vikash Thakkar 3-1 (6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-4) in the summit clash of the WTT Feeder in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
  • Seeded at No.11 for the event, Gnanasekaran enjoyed a rewarding path to the final, taking down No.5 seed Harmeet Desai (15-13, 6-11, 11-8, 13-11) and top seed Chuang Chih-Yuan (11-8, 11-13, 11-8, 11-9) en route to title triumph.
  • It was the first time two Indian players contested for the men's singles final in the WTT Feeder event.

Ruturaj Gaikwad New Skipper of CSK

  • M.S. Dhoni stepped down as captain of the Chennai Super Kings. Ruturaj Gaikwad was named captain of the team in IPL 2024. Gaikwad has been part of the franchise since 2019 and has played 52 matches. The Maharashtra batter was the Orange Cap winner in 2021, when CSK won its fourth title. Gaikwad has 1797 runs from 52 matches at an average of 39.06 and a strike rate of 135.52.
  • Dhoni has captained Super Kings since the IPL began in 2008 - except the two years when the franchise was suspended in the wake of the 2013 spot-fixing case - but handed over the reins to Ravindra Jadeja at the start of the 2022 season. However, Dhoni returned as skipper after eight matches.

  • A new player disrupted the stronghold of Dream11 as the king of fantasy sports in India, and the biggest move depicting that disruption is My11Circle signing a five-year deal with the Indian Premier League (IPL) as their official new fantasy sports partner.
  • The deal was made official by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the Indian Premier League Governing Council (IPL GC).
  • The five-year period begins from the IPL 2024 season. The parent company of My11Circle, Games24x7, claims to be India's most innovative and user-centric online skill gaming company.
  • Famous cricket stars such as former India captain and BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill, Punjab Kings' Arshdeep Singh, RCB's Mohammed Siraj, and new CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad are among some of the brand ambassadors of My11Circle.

Haryana Enter Semi-finals of Women's Hockey Nationals

  • Madhya Pradesh, Haryana and Jharkhand qualified for the semi-finals of the senior women's hockey National Championship at the Major Dhyanchand Hockey Stadium Pimpri, Pune. Deepika struck a brace to hand favourites Haryana a 4-1 win over Odisha. Indian internationals Neha Goyal and Navneet Kaur also got goals for Haryana. In the other quarter-finals of the day, Madhya Pradesh beat Bengal 4-3 in a shootout after both teams were locked 1-1, while Jharkhand edged past Mizoram 2-1.

Third Edition of North East Games 2024 Begins in Nagaland

  • The 3rd edition of North East Games 2024 is being held in Nagaland at Regional Centre for Sporting Excellence, Sovima. Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio officially declared open the 3rd North East Games 2024, which will conclude on March 23.
  • More than 3000 athletes from eight North Eastern states are competing in 15 disciplines being held in 12 venues across three districts Chumoukedima, Dimapur and Kohima.

Pankaj Advani Inducted into Billiards Hall of Fame

  • India's Pankaj Advani achieved yet another milestone in his glorious career as he was inducted into the Hall of Fame at the World Billiards Museum in Shangrao City in China.
  • In November 2023, the Indian star won his 26th IBSF title after beating compatriot Sourav Kothari.

IOC Bars Russia, Belarus from Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony

  • Russian and Belarusian athletes were barred from participating in the parade of nations at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) announced.
  • The decision was taken after an IOC executive board meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland. The athletes from the two countries were already forced to compete under a neutral flag but the latest decision is expected to further drive a wedge.

Rishabh Pant Appointed Delhi Capitals Captain for IPL 2024 Season

  • The Delhi Capitals franchise named Rishabh Pant their captain for the 2024 season.
  • Pant, who last featured in a competitive game in December 2022, played some practice games and will be available for Delhi Capitals' opening match against Punjab Kings at Mohali which is scheduled for March 23, with the T20 World Cup on the horizon as well.
  • Pant took 14 months to recover before being certified as fit by the National Cricket Academy (NCA).

  • Carolina Marin ended a nine-year wait for a second women's singles title at the All England after Akane Yamaguchi was forced to retire.
  • The Spaniard was leading 26-24, 11-1 when her Japanese opponent withdrew because of a hip injury. 
  • A marathon first game, the joint-longest of this year's tournament, saw the lead change hands seven times with Marin requiring a medical timeout.
  • But the 30-year-old recovered to win the first game against an injured Yamaguchi. "At the beginning of the week, I had a hard conversation with my coach about the things that I have to improve," said Marin, whose main aim this year is the Paris Olympics, starting in July.

Carlos Alcaraz Defends Indian Wells Title with Win Over Daniil Medvedev

  • Carlos Alcaraz successfully defended his Indian Wells crown with a 7-6(5) 6-1 win over Daniil Medvedev in the final.
  • In a rematch of last year's final, Alcaraz started sloppily, spraying errors around the court to fall 3-0 down but raised his level and captured the first set when his Russian opponent's forehand went wide in the tiebreak. The Spaniard romped through the second set, raising his arms in the air and letting out a roar when Medvedev missed another forehand wide on match point.
  • Second seed Alcaraz smacked 25 winners to Medvedev's 11 and was especially effective against his opponent's second serves. It was an eventful stay in the California desert for the 20-year-old Alcaraz.

India's Ram Baboo Books Paris Olympics 2024 Spot with Personal Best

  • India's Ram Baboo on Saturday achieved the Paris Olympics men's 20km race qualification standard, clocking a personal best time of 1:20:00 at the Dudinska 50 Meet in Slovakia.
  • Baboo, a bronze medallist in the 35km walk race at the Hangzhou Asian Games, finished third in the Race Walking Tour Gold-Level event. This is the first time an Indian athlete is finishing on the podium in this meet. The cutoff mark for Olympic qualification is 1:20:10.
  • The 24-year-old Baboo is also the seventh male walker from the country to breach the above-mentioned qualification mark, while the others are: Akshdeep Singh, Suraj Panwar, Servin Sebastian, Arshpreet Singh, Pramjeet Bisht and Vikas Singh.
