India Elected to Vice Presidency of International Organisation of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA...

India was elected to the Vice Presidency of the International Organisation of Aids to Marine Navigation (IALA) in Singapore.
T. K. Ramachandran, Secretary, Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways led the Indian delegation comprising Mukesh Mangal, Joint Secretary, N. Muruganandam, Director General of Lighthouses and Lightships, and S. Saravanan, Dy. Director, at the 1st General Assembly of IALA in Singapore.
The first General Assembly of IALA also marks its transition from a non-governmental organisation (NGO) to an inter-governmental organisation (IGO), where India was elected to its Vice Presidency. This underscores India's strong leadership and contributions to maritime affairs, reaffirming its commitment to sustainable and secure marine navigation.
IALA, established in 1957 as an NGO, transitioned to an IGO to enhance its role in shaping international standards and best practices for safe and efficient navigation.

S. Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India (EAM), visited Oman in February 2025, and participated in the 8th Indian Ocean Conference. During the conference, EAM delivered the keynote address in the inaugural session, underscoring India's commitment to strengthening regional cooperation and ensuring a stable and prosperous Indian Ocean region.
Representatives from 20 countries, including India, Oman, Singapore, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Maldives, Myanmar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Tanzania, participated in this conference.
This conference serves as a key platform for discussing regional cooperation for security and development in the Indian Ocean region.

'Imagine a world with more women in science' Campaign Launched By UNESCO

UNESCO has launched the "Imagine a world with more women in science" campaign to mark the 10th anniversary of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science (February 11). The campaign emphasises the positive impact of diverse perspectives in scientific fields and encourages greater participation of women using the hashtag #EveryVoiceInScience.
The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) declared February 11 as the International Day of Women and Girls in Science in 2015, aiming to bridge the gender gap in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Medicine).

BRICS Summit in Rio Amid U.S. Tariff Threats

Brazil is preparing to host the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7, 2025. This high-profile gathering will bring together leaders from Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and a select group of invited nations. The summit will serve as an essential platform to discuss crucial global governance reforms and deepening cooperation among countries from the Global South.
Established in 2009, the BRICS bloc has grown significantly, now including nations like Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia. Constantine Tassoulas New President of Greece

Constantine Tassoulas, the former parliamentary speaker was elected as the new President of Greece. Tassoulas, a senior member of the ruling New Democracy party, secured 160 votes in the 300-seat parliament. He will take over from Katerina Sakellaropoulou, Greece's first female president, whose term ends in March. The position of President in Greece is largely ceremonial, but the selection reflects the political direction of the country's leadership.
Constantine Tassoulas has been a key political figure in Greece for over two decades. He has been a Member of Parliament since 2000, representing his hometown. He is affiliated with the centre-right New Democracy party and has held several ministerial positions, including Deputy Minister of National Defence and Minister of Culture and Sports.

Klaus Iohannis, Romania's President since 2014, resigned on February 12, 2025, before completing his term. His departure was triggered by pressure from far-right opposition parties, which were moving forward with a motion to suspend him from office.
