India's 1st AI Data Bank to Boost National Security

  • The Ministry of Science and Technology launched India's first Artificial Intelligence (AI) data bank that is aimed at propelling innovation and boosting the country's national security.
  • The initiative will provide researchers, start-ups, and developers access to high-quality, diverse datasets essential for creating scalable and inclusive AI solutions.
  • It was launched by Minister of Science and Technology Minister (Independent Charge) Jitendra Singh at the 7th Edition of the ASSOCHAM AI Leadership Meet 2024 in New Delhi.

Prasar Bharati Launches its Own OTT Platform 'Waves'

  • Chief Minister of Goa Pramod Sawant launched 'WAVES' the OTT platform of the national public broadcaster, Prasar Bharati at the opening ceremony of 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa. Sanjay Jaju, Secretary I&B, among other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
  • Doordarshan, India's iconic public broadcaster, ventured into the OTT (Over-The-Top) platform space to cater to the growing demand for digital streaming services. The platform aims to revive nostalgia while embracing modern digital trends by offering a rich mix of classic content and contemporary programming.

Assam Renames Karimganj District

  • Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government decided to rename Karimganj district as Sribhumi. The new name is inspired by poet Rabindranath Tagore's reference to the region as 'the land of Maa Lakshmi,' symbolising prosperity and divine blessings.
  • The decision made during a cabinet meeting reflects the historical and cultural significance of the region. CM Sarma noted that Tagore had described the area as "Sribhumi" over a century ago, and the renaming honours this legacy while fulfilling a long-standing demand from the local community.

India, Australia Launch Renewable Energy Partnership

  • India and Australia officially launched the Renewable Energy Partnership aimed at boosting two-way investment in the renewable energy sectors as Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese.
  • The two leaders held the 2nd India-Australia Annual Summit on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro during which they reiterated their commitment to further advance the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in myriad areas like defence & security, trade & investment, education, skills, sports, space, mobility & people-to-people ties.
  • Both leaders welcomed the launch of the Renewable Energy Partnership (REP), as agreed during the 1st India-Australia annual summit.

Narendra Modi Becomes the First Indian PM to Visit Guyana in 56 Years

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi became the first Indian PM to visit Guyana in 56 years and he was received at the airport with warm welcome. In an unprecedented gesture, he was received at the airport by President Irfan Ali and over a dozen cabinet ministers. PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome and Guard of Honour in Georgetown, Guyana.
  • During his visit, PM Modi addressed a special sitting of Guyana's parliament. He also joined leaders from the Caribbean partner countries for the 2nd India-CARICOM Summit.
  • According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the Prime Minister's visit came at the invitation of Guyanese President Mohammad Irfaan Ali.

Sanjay Murthy Next CAG

  • President Droupadi Murmu appointed 1989 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer K. Sanjay Murthy as the new Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).
  • The appointment came two days ahead of the completion of the incumbent Girish Chandra Murmu's tenure. Murmu was appointed CAG in August 2020.

Ex-Delhi Minister Kailash Gahlot Joins BJP

  • Former Delhi Transport and Environment Minister Kailash Gahlot joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), a day after he stepped down from his ministerial duties and also resigned from the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in India's national capital.
  • Gahlot joined the BJP in the presence of Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and other party leaders. He had earlier arrived at the party's office in New Delhi.
  • His induction into the BJP came just months before the assembly elections in New Delhi.

Italy-India Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025-2029

  • Aware of the unparalleled potential of the India Italy Strategic partnership, Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of Italy Ms. Giorgia Meloni during their meeting at the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil decided to give it further impetus through the following focused, time bound initiatives and joint plan of strategic action. To this end, Italy and India agree to:
  • Political Dialogue
  • Maintain meetings and reciprocal visits, on a regular basis, between Heads of Government, Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Defence, including on the sidelines of multilateral events.
  • Economic Cooperation and Investments
  • Leverage the work of the Joint Commission for Economic Cooperation and of the Italy-India Joint Working Group on Food Processing, to increase bilateral trade, market access and investment, especially in sectors with high potential such as transportation, agricultural products and machinery, chemical-pharmaceuticals, wood and furniture, critical and emerging technologies, food processing, packaging and cold chain, green technologies and sustainable mobility, including through co-development and co-production and joint ventures between large companies and SMEs.
  • Connectivity
  • Foster cooperation on sustainable transport in the context of environment sustainability and climate change.
  • Science, Technology, IT, Innovation and Start-ups
  • Expand cooperation on critical and emerging technologies, forging technology value chains partnerships in both countries in sectors such as telecom, artificial intelligence, and digitalization of services.
  • Space Sector
  • Expand the cooperation between the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to include projects of common interest in Earth observation, heliophysics and space exploration with emphasis on lunar science.

Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan ISBT Chowk Renamed after Birsa Munda

  • Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced that the chowk outside the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) bus stand in Delhi's Sarai Kale Khan will be renamed after Bhagwan Birsa Munda.
  • The Union Minister made the announcement at an event in Delhi where Union Home Minister Amit Shah unveiled a statue of Bhagwan Birsa Munda on the occasion of 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas', the birth anniversary of the tribal independence activist.

Jitendra Singh Inaugurates the International 52nd Annual Conference of RSSDI

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh, a nationally acclaimed Professor and Diabetologist, inaugurated the International 52nd Annual Conference of the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), advocating proactive Diabetes prevention before the symptoms appear and in pre-diabetic stage.
  • The Minister emphasised the importance of pre-emptive strategies in preventing diabetes before symptoms develop, particularly among young people and pregnant women. His address highlighted the urgency of tackling India's rising diabetes burden and the essential role of early intervention in reducing its impact on public health.

Eighth South and South-West Asia Subregional Forum on SDGs

  • The Eighth South and South-West Asia Forum on Sustainable Development took place in New Delhi, co-hosted by the NITI Aayog of the Government of India and ESCAP, in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator and the Research and Information System for Developing Countries. The Subregional Forum is organised annually as the subregional preparatory meetings for the Asia Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) at the regional level and the ECOSOC High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) at the global level. ESCAP, led by its Subregional Office for South and South-West Asia, has organised the South and South-West Asia Subregional Forum with rotating co-host governments and UN Resident Coordinators since 2017. The Forum facilitates dialogue between government officials, civil society, think-tanks, private sector, experts and development partners on the designated themes and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the annual APFSD and HLPF. It offers a unique opportunity among multiple stakeholders to exchange information and reflections on SDG implementation efforts in countries and to draw common priorities and issues across the South and South-West Asia subregion. The outcomes and recommendations from the Forum feed into regional and global processes, including the abovementioned APFSD and HLPF in the following year.
