Jyotiraditya M. Scindia Releases Commemorative Postage Stamps on the Historic Mahakumbh 2025 at P...

  • The Department of Posts released a commemorative souvenir sheet with three Stamps on the Maha Kumbh 2025. The stamps were unveiled by Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and Development of the North Eastern Region, at Arail Ghat Post Office, Prayagraj.
  • Honouring the rich traditions of the Maha Kumbh 2025, other philatelic items, including special covers and cancellations on sacred Snan days, 'Divya, Bhavya and Digital Mahakumbh' and a picture postcard celebrating 'Prakhyat Prayagraj' were also released.

President of India Inaugurates International Women's Conference by Art of Living

The Rajasthan Government Renames Two Significant British-era Landmarks

  • The Rajasthan government renamed two significant British-era landmarks in Ajmer to honour Indian heritage. The 132-year-old Foy Sagar Lake was renamed Varun Sagar, and the 113-year-old King Edward Memorial Bhawan was rechristened Maharishi Dayanand Vishrant Grih.
  • The renaming was confirmed by Rajasthan Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, who emphasised that these changes reflect India's journey towards erasing colonial remnants and embracing cultural pride.

President's Rule Imposed in Manipur

  • Four days after N. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister, the Centre announced that President's rule was imposed in Manipur and the state assembly placed under suspended animation. This closes a chapter and opens another in the state roiled by ethnic violence since May 2023.
  • Before President's rule was imposed, a security plan was prepared and the state police and intelligence agencies were monitoring movements of certain individuals to prevent any untoward incident.

The 14th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum

  • The 14th Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (14AFAF), with the theme 'Greening the Blue Growth in Asia-Pacific' was organised in New Delhi. The Asian Fisheries and Aquaculture Forum (AFAF) is a triennial event of the Asian Fisheries Society with its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This 14th AFAF was jointly organised by the Asian Fisheries Society (AFS), Kuala Lumpur; Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi; the Department of Fisheries (DoF), Government of India; and the Asian Fisheries Society Indian Branch (AFSIB), Mangalore. This prestigious event was hosted in India for the 2nd time after the 8AFAF held at Kochi in 2007.
  • The 14th AFAF brings together key players from the fisheries and aquaculture sectors and will host around 1,000 delegates from 24 countries, including researchers, policymakers, industry leaders, and stakeholders.

Amending CLNDA: India's Gateway to Nuclear Expansion

  • India announced plans to amend the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Act (CLNDA) and the Atomic Energy Act. The amendments aim to resolve long-standing concerns of foreign nuclear companies, facilitating investment and the execution of stalled projects like Electricité de France (EDF) – Six EPR1650 reactors in Maharashtra (Jaitapur), Westinghouse Electric Company – Six AP1000 reactors in Andhra Pradesh (Kovvada) and Expansion into Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology for future nuclear projects.
  • The proposed changes mark a shift from the government's earlier stance of not amending the Act and are expected to help India meet its ambitious 100 GW nuclear power capacity target by 2047.

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri Inaugurates India Energy Week 2025

  • Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri inaugurated the third edition of the India Energy Week 2025 at the Yashobhoomi Convention Centre in New Delhi. Stating that India was not facing any energy deficit, he said that as part of adopting clean energy, the country was installing massive LNG storage infrastructure and increasing the production of bio fuels to help achieve 20% usage of green energy. The bio fuel adoption is planned to be achieved through the provision of incentives and subsidies for electrolysers.

South India most Curious about ChatGPT

  • Telangana led Indian states in searches about ChatGPT, followed closely by Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. At the other end stands Bihar, with minimal curiosity about the AI tool, according to the latest Google Trends data accessed by India in Pixels, a data storytelling platform that breaks down and simplifies data for public consumption.
  • In the top five, Telangana scored a perfect 100, Tamil Nadu 94, Karnataka 92, Maharashtra 85 and Kerala 81.

IRS Officer Maimun Alam Appointed as Director in Ministry of Steel

  • Maimun Alam, a 2007-batch Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, was appointed as the Director in the Ministry of Steel under the Central Staffing Scheme. The Government of India approved her appointment based on the recommendation of the Department of Revenue. She has a tenure of five years or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
  • Maimun Alam has had a distinguished career in the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), making notable contributions in tax administration and financial policy formulation. With extensive experience in revenue management, financial governance, and taxation policies, she has played a key role in strengthening fiscal policies. Her expertise in these areas is expected to add value to the Ministry of Steel, particularly in financial oversight and policy execution.

Cabinet Passes New Income Tax Bill 2025: A Major Overhaul of India's Tax System

  • The Union Cabinet approved the new Income Tax Bill, which will replace the six-decade-old Income Tax Act, 1961. The primary objective of this new legislation is to simplify, modernise, and streamline India's tax system, making it more comprehensible and efficient for taxpayers.
  • Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced in the Budget 2025-26 that the new bill will be introduced in Parliament in the ongoing session. Once tabled, it will be sent to the Standing Committee on Finance for further evaluation and discussion.

Cabinet Extends Safai Karamchari Commission Tenure

  • In a move aimed at bolstering the welfare of sanitation workers, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the extension of the tenure of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) for three years beyond March 31, 2025, extending it until March 31, 2028.
  • According to the Cabinet, the total financial implication for the extension will be approximately Rs. 50.91 crore.
  • The National Commission for Safai Karamcharis was established in 1993 under the NCSK Act. The NCSK was initially set up to promote the welfare of Safai Karamcharis (sanitation workers) and address the challenges they face. Over the years, its tenure has been extended multiple times, reflecting the ongoing need to support this marginalised community.
