Shinku La Tunnel Work to Begin by Mid-September

  • The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) will begin work in mid-September on the Shinku La tunnel, which will provide all-weather connectivity from Manali to Leh via the Nimmu-Padam-Darcha axis. The tunnel, located at an altitude of 15,800 feet, is expected to be completed in four years and will become the world's highest tunnel, surpassing China's Mila tunnel at 15,590 feet.
  • Shinku La tunnel is a mountain pass in India, on the state boundary between Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh.

Centre Recommends Increase in Reservation Quota for OBCs in Public Employment in Punjab, West Bengal

  • The National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC), an Indian government body, recommended an increase in the reservation quota for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in public sector employment in Indian states of Punjab and West Bengal. At present, Punjab allocates 25 per cent of public employment positions to Scheduled Castes (SCs) and 12 per cent to OBCs.
  • In an advisory, the NCBC proposed enhancing the OBC quota by an additional 13%, bringing the total OBC reservation in public employment to 25%. This adjustment would adhere to the Supreme Court's ceiling of up to 50 per cent reservation for socially and educationally backward classes.
  • In West Bengal, the reservation quota for SCs is 22 per cent, for Scheduled Tribes (STs) is six per cent, and for OBCs is 17 per cent, concerning services and posts under the control of the state in establishments run or aided by the government.
  • The NCBC said that in Bengal 17% reservation for the Other Backward Classes in respect of services and posts has been ensured.

Tripura Govt. Forms State-level Committee for Granting Citizenship under CAA

  • The Tripura government constituted a six-member state-level empowered committee with Rabindra Reang Director Census Operations, as Chairman to grant citizenship under the Citizenship (Amendment) Act 2019.
  • The CAA was enacted in December 2019 for granting Indian nationality to persecuted Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist, Parsi and Christian migrants from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
  • "Under the CAA, only those who take refuge from three specific countries due to religious persecution in non-Sixth Schedule areas like Agartala Municipal Corporation, municipalities, nagar panchayats and gram panchayats are eligible to apply for Indian citizenship with supporting documents.

Centre Hands over First Set of Citizenship Documents under CAA

  • Two months after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) notified the rules for implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which was enacted by Parliament in December 2019, Union Home Secretary Ajay Bhalla on May 15 physically handed over the first set of citizenship certificates to 14 applicants.
  • Despite its enactment four years ago, the CAA could not be implemented because the rules were not notified.

Home Ministry Extends Ban on LTTE by 5 Years: 'Threat to India'

  • The Union Home Ministry extended the ban on the LTTE by five more years for fostering a separatist tendency among the masses and enhancing the support base for it in the country, particularly in Tamil Nadu, besides threatening the territorial integrity of India.
  • The Centre has imposed the ban invoking the sub-sections (1) and (3) of section 3 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

CISF Lists Out Phased Takeover of Parliament Security

  • The security of Parliament complex, including the vehicular access and pass issuing section, will be taken over by the CISF personnel, a process that started on Tuesday and will be completed over the week. This came days after the Home Ministry appointed a panel to assess whether personnel of the CISF (Central Industrial Security Force) should fully take over — right from managing security arrangements to issuing passes to regulating movement of MPs, VIPs, officials and the media.
  • As per the order, the pass checking at flap gates of all the buildings in Parliament House Complex has been handed over to the CISF on May 14. The order suggested that anti-sabotage check is to be handed over on May 15, Dogs of dog squad (to be handed over on May 15), CCTV control rooms (6am on May 15), vehicular access control at Talkatora gate and Parliament Library gates (on May 20), and Communication Control Room, and pass section for both the Houses, deployment and transport branch, and reception counters (LS and RS) on May 20.

Aam Aadmi Party Launches 'Washing Machine Ka Kaala Jaadu' Campaign

  • The Aam Aadmi Party launched the "Washing Machine Ka Kaalu Jaadu" campaign to inform the common people about the situation in the country, party leaders said. At the campaign launch, AAP Delhi state convener Gopal Rai said the BJP is claiming that they are fighting the elections against corruption. "But we will tell people about the truth of these claims." he said. The opposition parties often use the word "washing machine" to target the BJP over inducting people like Ajit Pawar, Ashok Chavan, and Himanta Biswa Sarma, who were facing corruption charges.

  • The Maldivian government said that India extended "budgetary support" to the island nation with a rollover of a $50 million Treasury Bill. This came as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) warned Male against the looming "debt distress" as it looks to borrow more from China.

  • Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha President Tejasvi Surya accepted an invitation for a public debate with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and nominated BJYM's Vice President Abhinav Prakash.
  • Notably, the invitation for a public debate was extended by former Supreme Court judge Madan B. Lokur, former High Court Chief Justice A. P. Shah, and senior journalist N. Ram to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
