Manipur Cabinet to Restrict Govt. Schemes for Unrecognised Villages

  • The Manipur cabinet approved the decision of the state to restrict providing government schemes to unrecognised villages.
  • A state cabinet meeting was held chaired by the Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh.
  • The move came amid the state's move seeking information from the district authority concerned to furnish information regarding the number of villages, both recognised and unrecognised, along with the number of households since 1946.

Mindfulness India Summit Scheduled for Oct. 17-18

  • The third edition of the annual Mindfulness India Summit will be held on October 17 and 18 in Mumbai.
  • The summit aims to equip leaders and professionals with essential strategies to create healthier, more empathetic work environments.
  • Organised by the Mindful Science Centre and led by global mindfulness expert Manish Behl, the summit will explore mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and neuroscience. Supported by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and with The Hindu as media partner, the summit will bring together over 30 international experts in these fields. Keynote speakers include renowned figures such as Sara Lazar and Chris Germer from Harvard Medical School, Emma Seppälä from Yale University, and U.K. politician Chris Ruane.
  • The summit's theme, 'Thrive in the Age of Disruption', stresses the need for leaders to adopt mindfulness as a critical skill for navigating today's complex business landscape.

PM Modi Inaugurates Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) Mumbai

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Indian Institute of Skills (IIS) in Mumbai, aiming to enhance youth employability and create an industry-ready workforce for Industry 4.0. The IIS, built on a 4-acre campus at the National Skill Training Institute, focuses on cutting-edge technologies like factory automation, AI, data analytics, and additive manufacturing.
  • Established under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between the Ministry of Skill Development and Tata IIS, it emphasises aligning Indian youth's skills with global standards. The event also marked the launch of several development projects in Maharashtra worth over Rs. 7600 crore.

Two Independent MLAs Join BJP after Party's Big Win in Haryana Elections

  • A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a majority in Assembly elections in the Indian state of Haryana, two independent Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), joined the saffron outfit in a big boost for the ruling party.
  • Devender Kadyan and Rajesh Joon joined the BJP at Union Minister and Haryana in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan's house in the presence of state BJP chief Mohan Lal Badoli. Kadyan had won from Ganaur as an Independent, while Joon defeated his BJP rival to secure victory in Bahadurgarh.

October 2024 is 'Germany ka Mahotsav' in Delhi

  • The German ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann termed October 2024 as 'Germany ka Mahotsav' or Festival of Germany in New Delhi.
  • This month will see the German chancellor Olaf Scholz travelling to India for the India-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultations (IGC), which happens every two years and alternates between New Delhi and Berlin. Chaired by the German chancellor and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, it sees the top cabinet ministers from the two sides sitting together for talks to firm up ties.

Bihar: JD(U) Demands Classical Language Status for Maithili

  • The JD(U), an ally of the ruling NDA at the Centre, demanded that the classical language status be accorded to Maithili.
  • The demand came days after the BJP-led central government decided to accord classical language status to Marathi, Bengali, Pali, Prakrit and Assamese.
  • Janata Dal (United) national working president Sanjay Kumar Jha said that he would press for the demand.
  • As per Jha, the Maithili language is about 1300 years old and its literature has developed independently and continuously. Therefore, it should be placed in the category of classical language. But it has not been able to get such a status.

BJP Records Historic Hat-trick in Haryana

  • The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) created history in Haryana as it recorded a consecutive third term in the north-Indian state, with 48 seats, ahead of Congress's 37 seats.
  • Voting in the state was held in a single phase on October 5. According to the Election Commission of India (ECI), the state assembly election recorded an approximate 67.9 per cent voter turnout. With a polling percentage of over 80 per cent, the Ellenabad assembly seat in Sirsa district had the highest voter participation.

The 12th Meeting of the India-UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments

  • The 12th Meeting of the India-UAE High Level Joint Task Force on Investments (HLJTFI) took place in Mumbai. It was co-chaired by Piyush Goyal, Minister of Commerce & Industry, Government of India and His Highness Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Managing Director of Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA).
  • The HLJTFI was established in 2013 to promote trade, investment and economic ties between India and the UAE. Since its formation, it has provided an effective mechanism to discuss opportunities and prospects for further investments in India and the UAE, while acting as a forum to resolve issues faced by investors of the two countries.
  • During the 12th HLJTFI meeting, the co-chairs acknowledged the continued growth and strengthening of the bilateral relationship between India and the UAE, including on trade and investment related matters. The India-UAE Bilateral Investment Treaty, signed during Prime Minister Modi's visit to the UAE in February 2024, has been ratified by both sides and entered into force with effect from 31 August 2024.

Nadda Elected as Chairperson of 77th Session of WHO Regional Committee

  • The World Health Organisation kicked off its 77th session of the Regional Committee for Southeast Asia in New Delhi from October 7 to 9.
  • India's Minister of Health, J. P. Nadda, has been elected as the Chairperson of the 77th Session.
  • RC77 Seventy-seventh Regional Committee Session of WHO South-East Asia is the annual governing body meeting of WHO in the Region. The member nations include Bangladesh, Bhutan, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, India, Indonesia, the Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Timor-Leste.
  • Ministers of Health and delegates from the region's member states have flown to Delhi to deliberate upon key priorities and actions towards accessible public health.

Ajit Vinayak Gupte India's Next Envoy to Germany

  • Senior diplomat Ajit Vinayak Gupte was appointed India's next ambassador to Germany, the Ministry of External Affairs said.
  • He is currently India's envoy in Egypt.
  • He is expected to take up the assignment shortly, the MEA said in a statement.
  • The appointment comes ahead of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz's scheduled visit to India later this month.

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai inaugurated the Jal-Jagar Mahotsav at the Ravishankar Reservoir in Gangrel Dam, Dhamtari, marking a significant milestone in the state's water conservation initiatives. This event highlights the district administration's innovative strategies to address groundwater depletion, gaining recognition for its proactive approach.
  • The Jal-Jagar initiative in Chhattisgarh is unique in its local focus, particularly aimed at groundwater recharge in Dhamtari, a district where depletion had been a critical issue.
  • By involving local communities and leveraging traditional practices, this program is a grassroots complement to national missions like Jal Jeevan, which operates on a larger scale but with a similar goal of improving water access and sustainability.
  • The Jal-Jagar initiative is being hailed as a significant step towards achieving broader environmental sustainability in Chhattisgarh.

Chennai Enthralled by the IAF Air Show at Marina after a Gap of 21 Years

  • Over 15 lakh people from various parts of Chennai and neighbouring districts thronged the shores of Marina and its neighbourhoods and witnessed the spectacular air show of the Indian Air Force (IAF), conducted as a part of the 92nd Indian Airforce Day celebrations.
  • The city, which hosted the IAF airshow after 21 years, witnessed a scintillating aerial display of several fighter jets, helicopters, and vintage aircraft, which enthralled the audience. Some of the aircraft and helicopters that participated in various formations include LCA Tejas, Rafale, Sukhoi 30 MKI, Jaguar Mirage 2000, MiG 29, HTT 40, ALH Mk-I, Hawk MK, Chetak, Dakota and Harvard.
  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, Air Chief Marshal A.P. Singh, Ministers, MPs and other senior officials from the Armed forces were among others who witnessed the airshow at Marina.
  • According to a Defence Press release, the show entered the 'Limca Book of Records' with over 15 lakh people watching the spectacular performance by IAF's 72 aircraft.

13,822 Jan Aushadhi Kendras Established Across the Country

  • Under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, as of September 30, 2024, a total of 13,822 Jan Aushadhi Kendras have been established across the country. Notably, in September 2024, these Kendras achieved record sales of Rs. 200 crore - the highest monthly sales in the history of the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana.
  • These Kendras provide affordable medicines to citizens, promoting accessible healthcare.
  • Under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana (PMBJP), in last 10 years, sale of medicines worth Rs. 6100 crore were done through Kendras, which has led to estimated savings of Rs. 30,000 crore for the citizens as compared to the branded medicines.
