Magnus Carlsen Wins the Chess World Cup Final 2023

  • R. Praggnanandhaa became the youngest player to reach the chess World Cup final but in the final he faced the indominatable World No.1 Magnus Carlsen. After the first two classical games ended in draws, Carlsen clinched the first tie-break before the second tie-break also ended in a draw. With that Carlsen has won his first Chess World Cup title.

Shooting World Championships: Women Shoot Down Gold as India Finishes Second

  • Tiyana, Sakshi Suryavanshi and Kirandeep Kaur combined to clinch gold in the women's 50m pistol as India finished the 2023 ISSF World Championships with six gold and eight bronze medals in total.
  • Hence, India finished the event with 14 medals, second behind China. India also ensured four Paris Olympics quotas from the tournament.

Mastercard Inks Brand Partnership with ICC for Upcoming World Cup

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced a brand tie-up with Mastercard for the upcoming Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 to be held in India between 5 October and 19 November, 2023. Under this tie-up, Mastercard will be a global partner for the World Cup.
  • The tie-up underscores the substantial experience that Mastercard brings to sports partnerships and its seamless alignment with the ICC's overarching goal of enhancing the cricketing experience for fans all over the globe.

No Tricolour for Indian Wrestlers

  • In another blow for Indian wrestling, the United World Wrestling (UWW) suspended the country for failure to conduct elections.
  • Indian Olympic Association's acting CEO Kalyan Chaubey confirmed the development, which means that even though India's wrestlers will still participate in the World Championships next month it'll be as neutrals and not under the national flag. Moreover, in case India's wrestlers finish on top of the podium, the national anthem will not be played.
  • The UWW had threatened to suspend India back in June when it issued a strongly-worded statement condemning the treatment and detention of the protesting wrestlers.

BCCI Announces BookMyShow as Ticketing Platform for ICC Men's World Cup 2023

  • The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced BookMyShow as the official ticketing platform for the 2023 Cricket World Cup.
  • The tournament will feature a total of 58 matches, including 10 warm-up fixtures, hosted across 12 prominent venues throughout India.

Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Honduras and Sweden are Six New Members to Join World Boxing

  • World Boxing added weight to its bid to achieve recognition from the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by announcing six new members.
  • New members include federations from Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Honduras and Sweden joined the new breakaway sports body, bringing the total number of members to 12.
  • World Boxing was launched in April 2023 with a mission to keep boxing at the heart of the Olympic movement amid fears it might be excluded from future Games over the IBA's failure to implement reforms.

Amanpreet Singh Clinches Gold in Men's 25 metre at ISSF World Championship

  • Indian shooter Amanpreet Singh won the gold medal in the men's 25m standard pistol shooting event at the ISSF World Championship 2023 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
  • The Indian shooter topped the field of 50 shooters with 577 points from 60 shots. The Republic of Korea's Gunhyeok Lee settled for silver with 574 (17 X's) while Kevin Chapon of France claimed bronze with 574 (11 X's).

India Bags Gold and Silver at World Para Power Lifting Championships 2023

  • In historic first, Indian powerlifters, Honey Dabas and Rahul Jograjiya, bagged gold and silver medals to open the World Para-Powerlifting Championships 2023 held in held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
  • Dabbas clinched the nation's first-ever gold with lifts of 132 kg and then 135 kg, displaying amazing grit, determination, and strength.
  • Meanwhile, Jograjiya followed his compatriot to secure the silver medal with a final lift of 132 kg in the fiercely-contested men's 72 kg junior weight category.

  • Novak Djokovic came back from behind to defeat world number one Carlos Alcaraz in the final of the Cincinnati Open 2023. Djokovic beat Alcaraz 5-7, 7-6(7), 7-6(4) in a nerve-wracking four-hour spectacle.
  • The Serb's victory was a triumphant redemption, avenging his previous loss to the young Spanish contender in the Wimbledon final just a month prior.

  • Khelo India Women's League was renamed as Asmita Women's League.
  • The Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports of India, Anurag Thakur said, "The 'Asmita Portal' serves as a comprehensive resource, offering valuable insights into upcoming leagues among other features. It will enable any school, college, government, or private organisation to host the 'Asmita Women's League' and be part of Khelo India's march towards sporting excellence."
  • Asmita is the abbreviation of Achieving Sports Milestone by Inspiring Women Through Action.

Legendary Zimbabwe Cricketer Heath Streak Passes Away

  • Heath Streak, legendary Zimbabwe cricketer who also coached Bangladesh men's national cricket team in the past, passed away at the age of 49. Streak was one of the most decorated cricketers of his time, representing Zimbabwe in 65 Tests, 189 ODIs, while scoring 4933 runs and taking 455 wickets for his country across formats. Streak, till date, remains the only player from Zimbabwe with a double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in Tests and 2000 runs and 200 wickets in ODIs. A number of his records still inspire cricketers, not just in Zimbabwe but across the world.
