India Only Country to Vote against Pakistan Resolution on Conventional Arms Control

  • India voted against a resolution by Pakistan on 'Conventional arms control at the regional and sub-regional levels'. The resolution by Pakistan and Syria in the First Committee of the UN General Assembly was adopted, with 179 members voting in favour, an abstention by Israel while India was the sole country voting against the resolution.
  • The UNGA first committee deals with disarmament, global challenges and threats to peace that affect the international community. The resolution recognises the "crucial role of conventional arms control in promoting regional and international peace and security."

Bangladesh Human Rights Commission Members Resign amid Crisis

  • All members of Bangladesh's National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) resigned, shortly after the release of a critical report highlighting an increase in mob violence. The NHRC, chaired by Kamal Uddin Ahmed, along with members Md Salim Reza, Aminul Islam, Kongjari Chowdhury, Biswajit Chanda, and Tania Haque, submitted resignation letters to the President.
  • These events follow a tumultuous period since the interim government took over three months ago, succeeding former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's departure amid public backlash and communal tensions.

ISA Launches World Solar Report Series

  • The 3rd edition of the World Solar Report series was launched at the 7th Assembly of the International Solar Alliance, spotlighting key areas in the global transition to sustainable energy. This year's (2024) release included four reports: the World Solar Market Report, World Investment Report, World Technology Report, and Green Hydrogen Readiness Assessment for African Countries.
  • The 3rd edition of the World Solar Report series was launched by Pralhad Joshi, India's Minister for New and Renewable Energy and President of the ISA Assembly.

Henley Passport Index 2024

  • In the latest Henley Passport Index released in October 2024, Singapore once again emerged as the world's most powerful passport. This accolade reflects the country's robust global standing and extensive diplomatic relations, granting its citizens visa-free access to an impressive 195 countries.
  • Following Singapore, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Spain are tied for the second position. Each of these nations offers their citizens visa-free access to 192 countries. This shared rank illustrates the significance of European nations in the realm of international travel and their strong diplomatic networks.
  • In the latest rankings, the United States has secured the 8th position, allowing its citizens visa-free entry to 186 countries.
  • In contrast, India ranks 83rd, providing its citizens with visa-free access to 58 countries. This ranking underscores the challenges that Indian passport holders face in terms of global mobility.

India, France Appointed President and Co-President of ISA for 2024-26

  • India and France were elected as President and Co-President of the International Solar Alliance (ISA) for a two-year term from 2024 to 2026. India was the sole candidate for the presidency, while France won the co-presidency in a contest with Grenada.
  • The Seventh Session of the ISA Assembly was held at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi from November 3 to 6, 2024.
  • Ministers and representatives from 29 countries attended and discussed solar energy goals and initiatives.

ILO's 352nd Governing Body Meeting in Geneva

  • The 352nd Governing Body meeting of the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is being held in Geneva. This important gathering began on October 28 and will run until November 7, bringing together representatives from member countries to discuss key labour issues and strategies for improving working conditions globally.
  • Sumita Dawra, Labour and Employment Secretary of India, presented India's initiatives and progress in improving living standards and employment.
  • The Governing Body serves as the Executive Body of the ILO, meeting three times a year (in March, June, and November) to make decisions on, ILO policy, Agenda for the International Labour Conference and ILO Programme and Budget.
  • ILO was created in 1919, as part of the Treaty of Versailles that ended World War I, to reflect the belief that universal and lasting peace can be accomplished only if it is based on social justice.
  • In 1946, the ILO became a specialised agency of the newly formed UN.

Duma Boko New President of Botswana

  • The opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change party candidate, Duma Boko, was elected as the sixth President of Botswana. This was announced by Botswana's Chief Justice, Terence Rannowane. The victory of the Umbrella for Democratic Change party in the parliamentary election also ended the 58-year rule of the Botswana Democratic Party in the country.
  • Botswana is one of the few countries in Africa that has been democratic and has held regular elections since its independence. The President is indirectly elected and is both the head of the state and the head of the government. The President is elected by the Botswana parliament, also known as the National Assembly.

India Secures ISA Presidency Again, Ashish Khanna New Director General

  • India and France have been re-elected as the president and co-president of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), respectively, at the seventh ISA assembly held in New Delhi. During the inaugural day of the assembly, Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced that India would continue to hold the presidency until 2026.
  • The ISA comprises 120 member and signatory countries. It has mobilised resources and facilitated solar project deployments, particularly in Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS). The alliance has completed 21 out of 27 demonstration projects.
