India First Country to Launch a Traditional Knowledge Digital Library

  • In a step towards global healthcare innovation, the World Health Organisation (WHO) released a technical brief titled "Mapping the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Traditional Medicine", acknowledging India's pioneering efforts in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayush systems.
  • The WHO release follows India's proposal on the subject, leading to the development of WHO's first-ever roadmap for applying AI in traditional medicine.
  • India's efforts to harness the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance and amplify the strengths of its Ayush systems reflect the broader vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who seeks to position the country as a global leader in digital health innovation and the integration of traditional medicine.
  • India's initiatives to digitise traditional knowledge, such as the Traditional Knowledge Digital Library (TKDL), are praised as global models for the preservation and responsible use of indigenous medical heritage. Furthermore, AI-powered tools are being used for cataloguing and semantic analysis of ancient texts, enabling easier access to time-tested therapeutic knowledge.

UNEPs 7th Frontiers Report

  • The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) released its 7th Frontiers report, 'The Weight of Time', in July 2025. It warns of growing threats from extreme heat and toxic pollution to the world's ageing population. The report marks how climate change and environmental hazards increasingly endanger older adults, especially in urban and low- to middle-income regions.
  • Heat-related deaths among people aged 65 and above have surged by 85% since the 1990s. If global temperatures rise by 2°C, deaths could increase by 370% by 2050. Older adults have reduced ability to regulate body temperature.

Kumar Mangalam Birla Joins US-India Business Forum Board

  • Kumar Mangalam Birla, Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, was appointed to the Executive Committee of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF). This is a major step that strengthens the business and economic partnership between India and the United States.
  • The USISPF is a key organissation that builds strong ties between the two countries by bringing businesses and governments together. It has members from global companies worth over $10 trillion and employing over 6 million people worldwide.

EU Chief Ursula von der Leyen Comfortably Survives Confidence Vote

  • European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen comfortably survived a vote of no confidence, as an overwhelming number of European Union lawmakers rejected a censure motion against her.
  • The motion contained a mix of allegations against von der Leyen, including text messaging privately with the chief executive of vaccine maker Pfizer during the COVID-19 pandemic, misuse of EU funds and interference in elections in Germany and Romania.
  • But 360 lawmakers voted against it during a plenary session at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, with 175 in favour, and 18 chose to abstain. Von der Leyen wasn't present for the vote.

BRICS Leaders Condemn Pahalgam Attack

  • In a declaration adopted at the 17th edition of the BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil the BRICS leaders condemned the Pahalgam terror attack in the strongest terms and called for combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing, and the provision of safe havens.
  • While the declaration did not take any names, the cross-border terror reference is seen to be aimed at Pakistan.
  • The BRICS declaration also called for a comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council, with a view to making it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, and to increase the representation of developing countries in the Council's memberships so that it can adequately respond to prevailing global challenges and support the legitimate aspirations of emerging and developing countries from Africa, Asia and Latin America, including BRICS countries.
