Eiffel Tower Grows 20 Feet Taller

  • The Eiffel Tower grew by six metres when vertigo-defying engineers fitted a new radio antenna on top of the Paris monument with the aid of a helicopter. The tallest building in Paris, known affectionately as the 'Iron Lady', measures 330 metres in height after the new addition. The new antenna would be used to transmit digital radio for the capital region.
  • It was inaugurated on March 31, 1889.

  • The Eiffel Tower company's president, Jean-François Martins, said that scientific progress is an integral part of the Iron Lady's 133-year history. "It's a historical moment this morning, because the Eiffel Tower is getting higher, which is not so common.
  • From the invention of the radio at the beginning of the 20th century to right now, decades after decades, the Eiffel Tower has been a partner for all the radio technology.

Russia Withdraws from Council of Europe

  • Russia, facing global condemnation for its invasion of Ukraine, is withdrawing from the Council of Europe (CoE), the country's ministry of foreign affairs announced. "We are launching the procedure to exit the CoE, and have given notification of our departure to Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric".
  • The Council of Europe was founded in the wake of the Second World War to uphold human rights, democracy and the rule of law in the continent. Established in 1949, it operates on an annual budget of around 500 million euros. The CoE is headquartered at the Palace of Europe, in Strasbourg, France.

Israel's Naftali Bennett Emerges as a Mediator in Russia-Ukraine War

  • Just a year ago, Naftali Bennett was struggling for his political survival as Israel headed toward its fourth consecutive election.
  • Today, the Israeli Prime Minister is at the forefront of global efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
  • Just as Bennett took advantage of unique circumstances to become the most unlikely of Prime Ministers, he has managed to leverage Israel's good relations with both Ukraine and Russia and his personal rapport with their leaders to turn himself into an unexpected mediator.
  • Although he has not yet delivered any major diplomatic breakthroughs, he is one of the few world leaders to speak regularly to both sides, providing a rare glimmer of hope for ending the 3-week-old war.

ICJ Orders Russia to Cease Hostilities in Ukraine

  • The United Nations' highest court ordered Russia to stop hostilities in Ukraine, granting measures requested by Kyiv although many are sceptical that Russia will comply.
  • Two weeks ago, Ukraine asked the International Court of Justice - also known as the World Court - to intervene, arguing Russia violated the 1948 Genocide Convention by falsely accusing Ukraine of committing genocide and using that as a pretext for the ongoing invasion.
  • Countries who refuse to abide by court orders can be referred to the U.N. Security Council, where Russia holds veto power.
  • The Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide (CPPCG), or Genocide Convention, is an international treaty that criminalizes genocide and obligates state parties to enforce its prohibition. It was the first legal instrument to codify genocide as a crime, and the first human rights treaty unanimously adopted by the United Nations General Assembly, on 9 December 1948, during the third session of the United Nations General Assembly. The Convention entered into force on 12 January 1951 and has 152 state parties as of 2021.

Vladimir Putin Slaps Sanctions on Biden, Blinken

  • Russia put US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken and other top officials on a "stop list" that bars them from entering the country.
  • Their names, together with Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, CIA chief William Burns, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and others, were included on a list of 13 individuals banned from Russia in response to sanctions imposed by Washington on Russian officials. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was also named.

Hungary Elects Katalin Novak as President, First ever Woman President

  • The Hungarian parliament elected Katalin Novak, a close ally of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, as the EU member's first ever woman president.
  • Novak, who most recently served as a minister for family policy, portrayed her election as a victory for women.

Zelensky Open for Talks with Putin in Israel

  • Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that he is open for talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Israel, but only if there is a cease-fire in place.
  • Bennett visited Moscow for a meeting with Putin and spoke repeatedly with Zelenskyy and the leaders of France and Germany as he sought to help mediate an end to the war.
  • Putin has ignored numerous previous offers of talks from Zelenskyy.

Biden Names Indian-origin Activist Shefali Razdan as Envoy to Netherlands

  • US President Joe Biden announced his intent to nominate Indian-origin political activist Shefali Razdan Duggal as his envoy to the Netherlands.
  • An immigrant to the US from Kashmir, Duggal has been raised in Cincinnati, Chicago, New York and Boston.
  • Duggal is an experienced political activist, women's rights advocate and human rights campaigner.
  • She is a former Presidential Appointee to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Council and continues to serve as a Western Regional Advisor.

Gabriel Boric, the Youngest Elected President of Chile

  • Gabriel Boric Font who was sworn in as the new President of Chile, became the youngest President of Chile so far.
  • Boric is a left-leaning former student leader who says that he is determined to improve the lives of all Chileans and attack deep that inequality that has sparked massive protests.
  • New President Boric was also one of the key politicians to negotiate the agreement that paved the way for a referendum to change the Constitution.
  • Gabriel Boric, who won 56% of the vote in a December runoff against conservative José Antonio Kast, took over the office of President at a time when large-scale immigration from Venezuela and other countries have caused unrest in northern Chile.
