Journey to Mercury

As per the European and Japanese space agencies, an Ariane 5 rocket successfully lifted a spacecraft carrying two probes into orbit for a joint mission to Mercury, the closest planet to the sun.

The unmanned BepiColombo spacecraft successfully separated and was sent into orbit from French Guiana as planned, to begin a seven-year journey to Mercury.

India's First Uterine Transplant Baby

India got its first baby born following a uterine transplant at Pune's Galaxy Hospital, a 1.4-kg girl.

The first uterine transplant in the world was done in 2002. Since then, there have been 27 such transplants, with only 11 women going on to have successful deliveries. Meenakshi is now the 12th.

Nine of the other 11 babies were born in Sweden, and two in the US.

Giant Planets around Young Star Discovered

Scientists have identified a young star with four Jupiter and Saturn-sized planets orbiting it. This is the first time that so many massive worlds have been detected in such a system.

The star CI Tau is located in a highly productive stellar nursery.

The system has also set a new record for the most extreme range of orbits yet observed.

The star is just two million years old and is surrounded by a huge disc of dust and ice.

Lab-grown Oesophagus

Scientists in London have grown a bio-engineered oesophagus which was successfully implanted into mice.

The team hopes the research could eventually lead to clinical trials of lab-grown food pipes for children born with part of their oesophagus damaged or missing.

The oesophagus is a complex, multi-layered organ, made up of multiple tissue types, which acts as a pipe carrying food and liquid from the mouth to the stomach.

Satellites to Strengthen GPS-style System

China successfully launched twin BeiDou-3 navigation satellites into space to strengthen its satellite navigation network being built to rival the US' Global Positioning System (GPS).

The satellites will work with the 14 BeiDou-3 satellites already in orbit.

The satellites are the 39th and 40th of the BeiDou navigation system, and the 15th and 16th of the BeiDou-3 family.
