TT Star and Three-time Olympic Medalist Kasumi Ishikawa Announces Retirement

  • Japanese table tennis star Kasumi Ishikawa, who won three women's team medals at three consecutive Olympic Games, announced her retirement.
  • She said that she had decided to call it quits after the WTT Macau in April when she lost to China's Chen Meng in the women's singles round of 16.
  • Ishikawa started to play table tennis at the age of 7 and represented Japan in international competitions from 14.
  • Ishikawa, who won five national women's singles championships, was a key figure when the Japanese women's team won the silver medal, the country's first Olympic table tennis medal, at London 2012.
  • She went on to help Japan win the women's bronze medal in Rio 2016 and silver again in Tokyo 2020.

Murali Sreeshankar Wins Gold in USA Meet

  • Indian long jumper Murali Sreeshankar claimed the gold medal with a leap of 8.29 metres at the MVA High Performance athletics meet 1 held in Chula Vista, USA.
  • Competing in only his second event of the season, Sreeshankar, who had won silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, produced a creditable effort that was just short of his personal best of 8.36 m.
  • China's Ma Weidong secured the silver medal with a 7.99 m leap, while his compatriot Huafeng Huang claimed the bronze with an effort of 7.61 m.
  • The qualifying standard for the World Championships, to be held in Budapest in August, is 8.25 m but Sreeshankar's effort was not considered as tailwinds were over permissible limits.

India Replaces Australia as No. 1 Test Team

  • India ended Australia's 15-month reign as the No. 1 Test team ahead of the World Test Championship final in June 2023 between the two sides. The annual update of the official rankings dropped the results from the 2019-20 season and reflected all series completed since May 2020.
  • That meant India's 0-2 loss in New Zealand in 2019-20 was no longer in consideration, taking Rohit Sharma's team to the top of the list with 121 points. Australia dropped to 116 points after wins against Pakistan and New Zealand in 2019-20 were left out and their 4-0 Ashes victory against England had its weighting halved in the annual exercise.
  • England, who have won 10 of their last 12 Tests under captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum, remain third with 114 points.
  • India is also the top-ranked T20 team ahead of world champions England.

Ding Liren Becomes China's First World Chess Champion

  • Ding Liren became the 17th world chess champion, the first from China, defeating Russia's Ian Nepomniachtchi in a tie-breaker. Ding defeated Nepo in the last of the four Rapid tiebreaks. Ding took over as winner of the World Chess Championship from Norway's Magnus Carlsen, who chose not to defend his title after a 10-year reign. He and Nepomniachtchi had finished on seven points each after the 14 first-stage games played in the Kazakh capital, Astana.

Sailor Abhilash Tomy Creates History, Finishes 2nd in Premier Global Race

  • Commander Abhilash Tomy, a retired Indian Navy officer, became the first Indian to complete the prestigious Golden Globe Race.
  • Tomy had set off from Les Sables-d'Olonne on September 4, 2022, with 15 other competitors. Only two have thus far crossed the finish line at GGR at Les Sables-d'Olonne again. South Africa's Kirsten Neuschäfer came first on Thursday. She is the first woman to win the race.
  • Tomy is the first Asian skipper to finish on the podium in any round the world race, and in any format. He took part in the race in a United Arab Emirates-flagged boat "Bayanat".
  • The Golden Globe Race is considered the toughest sailing race in the world. The race, a solo around-the-world sailing race.

Sergio Pérez Wins Azerbaijan Grand Prix 2023

  • Red Bull's Sergio Perez won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the fourth round of the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship, in Baku. Sergio Pérez took advantage of a fortunately timed safety car to beat his teammate Max Verstappen to the victory in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Verstappen started second behind Ferrari's Charles Leclerc but swept past him on the long start-finish straight at the end of lap 3, the first lap on which drivers were allowed to use the DRS overtake assist system on the rear wing. Fernando Alonso finished in fourth place, showing strong pace for Aston Martin after issues in qualifying.

Nagal Wins Challenger Title on Clay

  • Sumit Nagal became the country's first player to win a European clay-court event on the ATP Challenger Tour, pulling off an upset win over higher-ranked Jesper de Jong.
  • Nagal won 6-3 6-2 against Netherlands' Jesper de Jong to clinch his third ATP Challenger title and the first since his triumph in Buenos Aires in 2019.

Shuttlers Satwik and Chirag Secure Asia Championships Title

  • Star doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty broke a 58-year-old drought, becoming the first Indians after Dinesh Khanna to be crowned champions at the Asia badminton Championships.
  • The 2022 World Championships bronze medallists scripted a sensational comeback after an opening game reversal to edge past Malaysian combination of Ong Yew Sin and Teo Ee Yi 21-16, 17-21, 19-21 in a nail-biting final to accomplish a magnificent victory in the continental championship.
  • Khanna is the only Indian to claim the gold medal, having achieved the feat when he beat Thailand's Sangob Rattanusorn in men's singles final in 1965 at Lucknow.
  • India's previous best performance in men's doubles at the Asia Championships was a bronze-medal finish by Dipu Ghosh and Raman Ghosh in 1971.

Stars of IPL 2008, MI-RR Skippers Felicitated at Ceremony on Tournament's 1000th Match

  • Legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batter Kumar Sangakkara, who were a part of the first-ever Indian Premier League (IPL) season back in 2008 with Mumbai Indians (MI) and Punjab Kings (formerly known as Kings XI Punjab), were felicitated on the occasion of the 1000th match of the league at Wankhede. The 42nd match of the Indian Premier League (IPL)2023 between Mumbai Indians (MI) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) at Wankhede in Mumbai was the 1000th match of this cash-rich league, making this another landmark in the rich and decorated history of the tournament.

Mairaj, Ganemat Shoot Down gold at Shotgun World Cup

  • Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon won the gold in mixed skeet as they outclassed Gabriela Rodriguez and Luis Oliveros of Mexico 6-0 in the shotgun World Cup in Cairo, Egypt.
  • The Indian pair topped qualification with 143, the same as Mexico, and won the shoot-off 4-3 and got the No.1 rank before the gold match.

Jaden Pariat Becomes First Indian in 6 Years to Get on Podium at British F4 Championship

  • Young Indian racing star Jaden Pariat of Argenti Motorsport displayed his immense talent with a podium in the first round of the ROKiT British F4 Championship at Donington Park. He is only the second Indian to get an international podium in a Tatuus F4 car after Kush Maini's podium in 2017.
  • The podium is being hailed as a big milestone for the younger generation looking to break through to higher levels of Formula racing.
