2024 SAFF U-19 Women's Championship

India was declared the winner of the SAFF U19 Women's football final over Bangladesh with a coin toss after the game was tied 11-11 on penalties. The match officials later announced both sides as the joint winners of the tournament.
The 2024 SAFF U-19 Women's Championship was the fifth edition of the SAFF U-18/19/20 Women's Championship, an international football competition for women's under–19 national teams organized by SAFF. The tournament was held from February 2 to 8, 2024 in Bangladesh.
Nepal, Bhutan, India and Bangladesh were the four participating nations in the tournament.

Age-group Wrestling Nationals Postponed

The Under-15 and Under-20 wrestling National Championships, scheduled to be held in Gwalior this month (February 2024), have been postponed after some state associations expressed their inability to participate in the event at such a short notice.
The ad hoc committee in charge of affairs of the Wrestling Federation of India took the decision after taking into account the state associations' genuine demand.
The championships were scheduled to be held from February 11 to 17. Representations from some state wrestling associations have been received to reschedule the U20 & U15 National Wrestling Championship. They have urged that in such short duration of time, they are unable to send the teams as trials for the same has not been conducted till date.

Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship-2024 in Arunachal Pradesh

The three-day Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship-2024 was held in Tawang District, Arunachal Pradesh. District Deputy Commissioner inaugurated the championship at Dongshengmang in Bongleng village near Indo Bhutan border.
A total of 51 kayakers from different countries including Britain, Russia and Australia and different states of the country participated in it. The event was organised by an organisation called 'SWYTCH'.
As per the race director Charanjeev Kala, the goal of this initiative was to position Arunachal Pradesh as a global hub for kayaking, with the aspirations to host future World Championships. The race was held from February 7 to 9, and culminated with the declaration of the Champion Kayakers, the one who has done best in all the races.

SCA Stadium Renamed in Honour of Niranjan Shah Ahead of India-England Test Match

Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) Stadium was rebranded as the Niranjan Shah Stadium. This change came as a tribute to the former first-class cricketer and senior cricket administrator, Niranjan Shah, marking his immense contributions to the sport and the region. The stadium has been a central hub for national cricket matches for over a decade.
The stadium's new name also celebrates the Shah family's continued involvement in cricket, with Jaydev Shah, Niranjan's son, at the helm of the SCA as its president. Like his father, Jaydev has had a distinguished career, leading Saurashtra in the domestic circuit and participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL), further cementing the family's cricketing heritage.

Telangana Football Association to Host FIFA World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad

The Telangana Football Association (TFA) secured approval to host the FIFA World Cup qualifiers round between India and Kuwait. The match would to take place on June 6 this year (2024) in Hyderabad, Telangana.
Mr. Mahi, along with TFA secretary Mr. G. P. Palguna, held constructive discussions with the Chief Minister of Telangana Revanth Reddyl. Their discussions centred on the logistical and financial aspects of hosting such a prestigious event.
Following the discussions, the Chief Minister expressed his support for the event, clearing the path for the historic match.

Sports Minister Anurag Thakur Opens BIMSTEC Aquatic Championships in New Delhi

Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Anurag Singh Thakur, inaugurated the BIMSTEC Aquatics Championships 2024 in New Delhi. This marked the first time such an event is being held.
The ceremony was graced by Dig Bahadur Limbu, Minister of Youth & Sports of Nepal.
The event is taking place at Delhi's Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Swimming Pool Complex from February 6 to 9. It features competitions in swimming, water polo, and diving for athletes under 20 years old.
A total of 39 medals and 9 trophies are up for grabs across the three sporting events, with over 500 personnel, including 268 athletes from BIMSTEC member countries, expected to participate.
BIMSTEC, comprising five South Asian nations (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka) and two Southeast Asian nations (Myanmar and Thailand), serves as a vital link between South and Southeast Asia for multi-sectoral technical and economic cooperation.

Mohsin Naqvi Pakistan Cricket Board's New Chairman

The Pakistan Cricket Board announced Mohsin Naqvi as the new Chairman of the board. Mohsin, Punjab province's caretaker Chief Minister, was unanimously elected for the top job for a three-year term.
Mohsin Naqvi is the fourth Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman in the last 4 years as instability in the administration has been a major talking point in the past. Ramiz Raja took charge in September 2021 and he was followed by Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf.
The election of Mohsin Naqvi came after the tenure of the interim management committee which has run the Board affairs since December 2022 came to an end on February 4.

Mir Sultan Khan Given Honorary Title

Legendary chess player Mir Sultan Khan, widely known as the best Asian chess player of his generation, was bestowed with the title of Honorary Grandmaster by FIDE President Arkady Dvorkovich. Mir Sultan thus became Pakistan's first grandmaster (as per FIDE, even though he played in pre-partition era India).
Born in 1903, Sultan Khan was a chess player from Sargodha in what is now north-east Pakistan. He famously won the British Chess Championship in 1929, 1931, and 1932. He also thrice played for England at the Chess Olympiad.
What was remarkable about Sultan Khan was that he learnt the game from his father, who taught him the traditional Indian rules which were slightly different than the rules of the modern game. And that he barely spoke any English, which made it even more difficult for him to grasp knowledge about the game from books.
