Shahid First Bangladesh Umpire to Enter ICC Elite Pane

  • Bangladesh's Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid became the first from his country to be inducted into the ICC Elite Panel of Umpires while India's Nitin Menon entered the top tier for an unprecedented fifth time. 
  • Indore-based Menon, who joined the elite panel at the start of Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, remains the only Indian in the 12-member club. Menon is only the third Indian to be part of the elite panel after S. Ravi and former India spinner S. Venkataraghavan, who performed on-field duties in 33 and 73 Tests respectively.

Kenyan Allrounder Collins Obuya Retires from Cricket Career

  • Veteran Kenyan all-rounder Collins Obuya announced his retirement from cricket following Kenya's defeat to Uganda in the third-place play-off match at the African Games.
  • Obuya represented Kenya in 104 ODIs, scoring 2044 runs and taking 35 wickets. He is Kenya's third-highest run-scorer in ODIs, with the country being stripped of their ODI status in 2014.
  • Obuya also holds the record for being Kenya's highest run-scorer in T20Is, amassing 1794 runs from 76 appearances.

Most Sixes, Most Runs: Records Tumble as Sunrisers Hyderabad Out Bat Mumbai Indians

  • It was a six-fest as both teams combined to score the highest number of sixes (38) and most number of runs (523) in a single game but it was Sunrisers Hyderabad who sealed the game with smart death bowling. Mumbai's stubbornness of not using more of Jasprit Bumrah in the first 10 of the bowling innings also played a part.
  • The previous highest total in IPL was 263/5 - RCB vs PW in Bengaluru, in 2013.

Haryana Crowned Champion at Boxing Sub Junior National Championship

  • Haryana clinched the team titles in both the boys and girls categories with an impressive combined haul of 19 medals at the Boxing Sub Junior National Championship at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Haryana showcased its dominance by finishing on top in both categories. The tournament witnessed the participation of 612 boxers, including 337 boys and 275 girls.
  • In the girls section, Haryana, the reigning champion, successfully defended its title by finishing on top with 64 points. The state won 10 medals, including 7 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze.
  • In the boys category, the state won 9 medals, including 6 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze, to secure the first position with 62 points.
  • Delhi and Maharashtra finished second and third with 34 and 31 points, respectively. Delhi won 1 gold, 3 silver, and 4 bronze medals, while Maharashtra ended its campaign with 1 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze medals.

Historic Day-Night Women's Ashes Test at MCG

  • In a historic move, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) will host a day-night Test match between the Australian and English women's cricket teams. This will be the first time a pink-ball Test is played at the iconic venue. The four-day match is scheduled from January 30 to February 2, 2025.
  • The Test match holds special significance as it will mark the 90th anniversary of the first-ever women's Test, played in December 1934. Additionally, it will be the first time the Australian women's team plays a Test at the MCG since 1949.
  • The day-night Test is part of a multi-format Ashes series between Australia and England. For the first time, the Women's Ashes will be played in a separate season from the men's competition since the introduction of the point-based system.

Sreeja Akula Wins Women's Singles Title at WTT Feeder Beirut II 2024 Table Tennis Tournament

  • In Table Tennis, India's Sreeja Akula won the women's singles title at the WTT Feeder Beirut II 2024 table tennis tournament at the Al Kawthar Secondary School in Lebanon. Akula, the world No. 47, beat Luxembourg's Sarah De Nutte to win what was her second WTT singles career title. Akula's maiden crown came at the Feeder Corpus Christi 2024 in Texas back in January.
  • Akula, however, failed to clinch a second table tennis title from the Lebanon meet after she and her partner Diya Chitale, went down to Hong Kong China's Doo Hoi Kem and Zhu Chengzhu in the women's doubles final.

Women's Asia Cup 2024

  • Defending champions India have been clubbed with arch-rivals Pakistan, UAE and Nepal in group A of the women's Asia Cup T20 Championships which is scheduled to get underway in Dambulla, Sri Lanka on July 19. The nine-day affair, will feature eight teams -- one extra than the last edition. Unlike last time, the eight teams will be split into two groups with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Thailand and Malaysia placed in Group B.
  • The top two teams from each group will qualify for the semi-finals on July 26. The final is scheduled on July 28. India is the most successful team in the history of the tournament with seven titles so far.

Border-Gavaskar Trophy between India and Australia Extended to 5 Tests

  • The latest edition of the marquee Border-Gavaskar Trophy was extended by a match with India and Australia set to play five Tests later this year (2024) for the first time since the 1991-92 season, announced the Cricket Australia (CA).
  • In the past four series between the two teams, India have won on all four occasions, including back-to-back away Test series wins in 2018-19 and 2020-21.
  • Given the competitive nature of the India-Australia rivalry and the high standings of both teams, the Border-Gavaskar trophy is considered to be one of the most prestigious bilateral trophies in world cricket.

Haryana Bags Third Women's Senior National Hockey Title

  • Haryana thwarted Maharashtra's hopes of winning at home with a 3-0 victory through shoot-out and lifted the 14th Hockey India Senior Women National Championship 2024 title.
  • For Maharashtra, it was the second successive year that they had to settle with the silver medal.

Carlos Sainz Wins Australian GP in Comeback Race

  • Ferrari's Carlos Sainz clinched victory at the Australian Grand Prix, marking a triumphant comeback just two weeks after undergoing appendicitis surgery. The race witnessed a dramatic turn as Red Bull's reigning world champion, Max Verstappen, faced his first retirement in two years.
  • Sainz, who secured the only non-Red Bull victory last season, fended off competition from teammate Charles Leclerc. The final-lap crash involving Mercedes driver George Russell triggered a virtual safety car, clearing the path for Sainz's decisive win.

India to Bid for 2025 Asian Beach Games

  • India is likely to bid for the Asian Beach Games to be held in 2025. A delegation of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), headed by interim president Raja Randhir Singh, met Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha.
  • As per Usha, the likely venue will be Goa. "We will speak first with the Goa Chief Minister (Pramod Sawant) and then take it up from there," Usha said.
  • For the bid to be officially lodged, the IOA needs a supporting letter from the state government as well as the central government, and Usha seems confident.
  • The Asian Beach Games could be the first multi-sport event hosted by India after the infamous 2010 Commonwealth Games, which were marred by corruption cases.

Smriti, Richa Only Indians Picked in Hundred Draft

  • Women's Premier League-winning captain Smriti Mandhana and wicketkeeper batter Richa Ghosh were the only Indian players who found takers during the Hundred Draft in London. Mandhana, who led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a WPL title, was drafted in by Southern Brave Women's while her teammate Richa found a new home at Birmingham Phoenix Women's. The left-handed Mandhana had a good run in the WPL, scoring 300 runs from 10 matches with two fifties, while Richa, who often did the role of a finisher, made 257 runs from 10 matches with two half-centuries and a strike-rate of 142.
