ICA General Assembly and the Global Cooperative Conference 2024
The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) is set to hold its General Assembly and Global Cooperative Conference in India for the first time in 130 years, from November 25-30, 2024. The event theme, 'Cooperatives Build Prosperity for All', aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Sahkar se Samriddhi', which translates to prosperity through cooperation. This important event will also mark the beginning of the UN International Year of Cooperatives in 2025.
This conference is a big deal for India because it will help boost its position in the global cooperative movement. Cooperatives in India will showcase their products and services in a special marketplace called a 'Haat,' designed to look like traditional Indian villages. To commemorate the event, a special stamp will also be released for the International Year of Cooperatives.

Arab World's First Nuclear Plant
The United Arab Emirates successfully completed the Arab world's first nuclear power plant, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the state-owned Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said.
According to ENEC, the four-reactor plant will provide 25 percent of the electricity required by the hot, desert Gulf state, where air-conditioning is widespread—approximately equivalent to New Zealand's annual electricity consumption.
It will also power major industries such as oil production, steel manufacturing, and aluminum production.
The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is situated in Al Dhafra, within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf, about 53 km west-southwest of the city of Ruwais.
Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan hailed the completion as a significant step towards achieving net zero emissions.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune Re-elected As Algeria's President
President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was named the winner of Algeria's presidential election, granting him another term leading the gas-rich North African nation.
Tebboune, who's seen as close to Algeria's powerful military, secured 94.7% of ballots in the contest against two other candidates.
With the outcome of the vote in little doubt, strong participation was seen as key to maintaining a sense of legitimacy for the 78-year-old leader, who came to power in 2019 against the backdrop of mass youth-driven protests that forced his veteran predecessor Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign.

French President Macron Appoints Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier as New Prime Minister
French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Michel Barnier, the European Union's former Brexit negotiator, as his new Prime Minister, in a bid to put an end to political paralysis following an inconclusive snap election.
The leftwing alliance that won June's election accused Macron of ignoring the result by picking a conservative. It called for demonstrations against Barnier's selection but did not have enough seats to block the choice on its own.
The far-right National Rally (RN), parliament's biggest single party, indicated it would not block Barnier for now, but could do so later if a range of demands were not met.
At 73, Barnier is the oldest Prime Minister in France's modern political history, taking over from Gabriel Attal, who was the youngest.
