Novak Djokovic Keeps Serbia Alive, Spain Reach Semis

Novak Djokovic rallied to overhaul Alexander Zverev 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-5 in a high-quality ATP Cup clash and help defending champions Serbia level their knockout tie against Germany after Spain qualified for the semi-finals in Melbourne.
A year after crashing out of the inaugural ATP Cup with a huge tally of double-faults, Alexander Zverev's serving demons returned under pressure at Rod Laver Arena when he was broken twice late in the deciding set. Uncharacteristically, Djokovic also dropped serve when looking to close out the match but made no mistake on his second chance, as Zverev conceded with a backhand that sailed long.

Naomi Osaka, Victoria Azarenka Withdraw from Australian Open Warm-up Tournaments

World No. 3 and former Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka has pulled out from the semi-finals of Gippsland Trophy, a warm-up tournament in the lead up to the season's first Grand Slam with an unspecified niggle. World No. 13 Victoria Azarenka also opted out of her quarter-final match in Melbourne with injury concerns.
Osaka said that she wanted to be cautious in the lead up to the Australian Open and that she is looking forward to playing in the Grand Slam tournament, starting February 8.

Ashok Dinda Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

Fast bowler Ashok Dinda, has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket. The 36-year-old right-handed pacer made his first-class debut for Bengal in 2005 and played for 15 years in Bengal cricket.
He made his international debut in 2009, in a T20I against Sri Lanka, followed by making his ODI debut in Zimbabwe in 2010. He played 13 ODIs and 9 T20I matches for India.
He played 116 first-class matches for Bengal, taking 420 wickets at a bowling average of 28.28.

Merv Hughes Inducted into Australian Cricket Hall of Fame

Former right-arm fast bowler Merv Hughes has been inducted into the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame. The 59-year-old played 53 Tests and 33 ODIs for Australia in a career spanning from 1985 to 1994, during which he captured 212 Test wickets and 38 ODI wickets.
His career-best figures of 8-87 against the West Indies at the WACA in 1988 included the final wicket of a hat-trick spread across three separate overs, two innings and two different days. In 2005, Hughes became a selector for the Australian cricket team, a role he would hold through until 2010.

Jorden Van Foreest Wins Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021

Jorden Van Foreest pulled off one of the great shocks in Tata Steel history in winning the 83rd event and becoming the first Dutch winner since Jan Timman in 1985. Van Foreest and Anish Giri drew the two blitz tie-break games, then there was a final Armageddon tie-break where Van Foreest had draw odds - he won on time in the end. As 11th seed Van Foreest was on no-one's list of potential winners but he was well prepared and solid. Earlier he beat Nils Grandelius in a very fine game indeed with a vicious new idea against the Najdorf Sicilian. Giri had his own troubles and was in severe danger of losing to David Anton for much of the final round before fighting back to draw in the end.

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah Takes over as President of ACC

Jay Shah, the incumbent Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been appointed as the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He is the youngest person ever to be appointed to the office. He replaces Nazmul Hussain, Chief of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) who was the previous chief of the ACC.
The ACC is Asia's regional administrative body and it currently consists of 24 member associations. ACC is responsible for organizing the Asia Cup tournaments. The 2020 edition of the Asia Cup was postponed to June this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pakistan was to originally host the tournament but the tournament is now expected to be held in either Sri Lanka or Bangladesh.

MS Dhoni Becomes First Cricketer to Earn This Massive Salary

Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni has become the first player to earn Rs. 150 crore salary from the Indian Premier League (IPL). Dhoni has become the first player – India or foreign – to achieve this mark when it comes salary in the T20 franchise league.
Dhoni is all set to lead for at least one more season with the Chennai Super Kings in the in IPL 2021 after announcing his retirement from international cricket last year. This means Dhoni will earn another salary cheque of Rs. 15 crore to his total IPL salary and will become the first players to breach Rs. 150 crore salary mark.
At present Dhoni's contract with CSK is worth whopping Rs. 15 crore and he has till date earned Rs. 137.8 crore with CSK and Rising Pune Supergiants. With CSK deciding to retain him for Rs. 15 crore in IPL 2021, Dhoni has crossed Rs. 150-crore salary mark in IPL and will become the first player to do so.
