Wrestler Sumit Malik in Dope Net, Faces Life Ban from WFI

Heavyweight wrestler Sumit Malik's life has turned upside down. Not only has he failed a dope test, he now faces the prospect of a life ban from the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).
Sumit, who qualified for the Tokyo Olympics after beating Daniel Robertti Diaz of Venezuela 5-0 in the 125 kg semifinals at the World Olympic Games Qualifier in Sofia (Bulgaria), has been provisionally suspended by the United World Wrestling (UWW) after his sample showed presence of a banned stimulant.
His sample, which was collected by the International Testing Agency (ITA) during the world qualifiers, showed traces of methylhexanamine.

Gujrathi Qualifies for Chess World Cup

India No. 3 Vidit Gujrathi has qualified for the FIDE Chess World Cup, to be held in Sochi, Russia, from July 10, on the basis of his rating. Grandmaster Gujrathi, ranked 23rd in the world, becomes the fourth Indian man to qualify for the upcoming World Cup. Grandmasters P. Harikrishna, Aravindh Chidambaram and P. Iniyan have also qualified for the World Cup. Koneru Humpy, D. Harika, Bhakti Kulkarni, R. Vaishali and Padmini Rout have qualified for the women's event.

ICC Champions Trophy to Return in 2025

As per ICC, the T20 World Cup will be held every two years during the next eight-year Futures Tours & Programme (FTP) cycle while the 50-over event will be a 14-team affair from the 2027 edition.
Also as per PTI's earlier report, the World Test Championship will have four editions in the next cycle apart from two Champions Trophies.
The ICC Board confirmed the schedule of ICC events from 2024-2031 with both the men's Cricket World Cup and men's T20 World Cup to be expanded and a men's Champions Trophy to be re-introduced," the global body said in a release issued after the board meeting.
The men's Cricket World Cup will become a 14 team, 54-match event in 2027 and 2031, whilst the men's T20 World Cup will be expanded to a 20 team, 55-match event in 2024, 2026, 2028 and 2030.
The 50-over format currently is a 10-team event while this edition of T20 World Cup will be a 16-team affair.

Naomi Osaka Withdraws from French Open

Japan's Naomi Osaka stunned the tennis world by withdrawing from the French Open after deciding to boycott post-match media duties, explaining she had been suffering from depression for almost three years. Osaka said in the build-up to the tournament that she would not attend the obligatory press conferences for players after matches, saying the questioning by journalists impacts her mental well-being.
She was fined $15,000 by the Roland Garros referee for not hold a press conference, and Grand Slam organisers later issued a strongly worded statement warning of possible expulsion from the French Open and future majors if she failed to change her stance.

Nick Hockley is Chief Executive of Cricket Australia

Cricket Australia appointed Nick Hockley as its new chief executive officer almost a year after he was recruited on an interim basis, during which he oversaw the conduct of the high-profile tour by India amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Besides the India tour of Australia, he was also in charge of successfully delivering the domestic competitions in a complex situation brought about by the global health crisis, which badly affected CA's original cricket calendar.
CA said that Hockley has served with distinction as its interim CEO since his appointment last June after the departure of Kevin Roberts.

Asian Boxing Championships

Defending champion Pooja Rani (75 kg) was the lone Indian woman boxer to strike gold at the Asian Championships while three others, including six-time world champion MC Mary Kom (51 kg), signed off with silver medals in Dubai. The Olympic-bound Pooja (75 kg), who was competing in her first bout of the tournament after getting a bye and a walkover earlier, dismantled Mavluda Movlonova of Uzbekistan with a clinical performance.
Six-time world champion Mary Kom (51 kg), and tournament debutants Lalbuatsaihi (64 kg) and Anupama (81+kg) ended with second place finishes.
