Indian Discus Thrower Kamalpreet Kaur Qualifies for the Finals

India discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur qualified for the Tokyo Olympics finals after finishing second in the women's discus throw qualification event at Olympic Stadium.
Kamalpreet was only the second thrower who achieved the automatic qualification of 64.00m after USA's Valarie Allman as the latter threw 66.42m in her first attempt.

Medal for Lovlina Borgohain

Debutant boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) provided the spark that India's Olympic campaign desperately needed with a medal-clinching quarter-final win, while ace shuttler P. V. Sindhu reconfirmed her status as one of the greats of the sport.
Borgohain a two-time world championship medallist, took a big step in making her own space in the Indian women's boxing's landscape, which has been largely dominated by the iconic M C Mary Kom.
She defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei to become the first among nine Indian boxers in fray to be assured of at least a bronze.

South Africa's Schoenmaker Sets Individual Swimming World Record

South Africa's Tatjana Schoenmaker has set the first individual swimming world record at the Tokyo Olympics.
She won the women's 200-meter breaststroke with a time of 2 minutes, 18.95 seconds, breaking the mark of 2:19.11 set by Denmark's Rikke Moller Pedersen at the 2013 world championships in Barcelona.
The United States claimed the other two medals. Lilly King set a blistering pace early in the race and held on for a silver in 2:19.92. Annie Lazor grabbed bronze in 2:20.84.
It was the third world record at the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, with the first two coming in women's relays.

P. V. Sindhu Through to Semi-finals at Tokyo Olympics

Reigning world Champion P. V. Sindhu kept India's hopes of winning a first-ever Olympic gold in badminton alive as she reached the semi-finals of women's singles with a fighting straight-game win over world no 5 Japanese Akane Yamaguchi.
She will next face the winner of the other quarterfinal between Thailand's Ratchanok Inthanon and Chinese Taipei's Tai Tzu Ying.

Satish Kumar Sails into Olympic Boxing Quarter-finals

India's first super heavyweight (+91 kg) boxer to compete in the Olympics, Satish Kumar, eased into the quarter-finals of his debut Games, defeating Jamaica's Ricardo Brown in his opening bout.
Satish Kumar is a two-time Asian Championships bronze-winner, and has been a multiple-time national champion.
Next up for Satish is Uzebkistan's Bakhodir Jalolov, the reigning world and Asian champion.

Sunisa Lee Takes Gold in Women's Gymnastics Final

An American finished atop the podium in the women's Olympic gymnastics all-around.
Sunisa Lee became the fifth straight American woman to claim the Olympic title on Thursday, edging Rebeca Andrade of Brazil in an entertaining and hotly contested final while defending champion Simone Biles watched from the stands.
Lee's total of 57.433 points was just enough to top Andrade, who earned the first gymnastics all-around medal by a Latin American athlete but missed out on gold when she stepped out of bounds twice during her floor routine.
Russian gymnast Angelina Melnikova earned bronze two days after leading ROC to gold in the team final.

Pakistan Climber Becomes World's Youngest Mountaineer to Scale K2

A 19-year old Pakistani climber became the youngest person in the world to reach the summit of K2, the second-highest peak in the world.
Mr. Shehroze Kashif from Lahore achieved the feat of scaling the 8,611-metre high peak with the aid of bottled oxygen.
Before Mr. Kashif, Mr. Sajid Sadpara, the son of the legendary climber Mr. Muhammad Ali Sadpara, was the youngest person to have climbed K2 at the age of 20.
Mr. Kashif also scaled the world's 12th-highest mountain, the 8,047-meter Broad Peak, at the age of 17. In May this year, he became the youngest Pakistani to scale Mount Everest.

Pooja Rani Storms into Quarter-finals of Olympics

Boxer Pooja Rani (75 kg) stormed into the quarter-finals of the women's middleweight (69-75 kg) category in the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in the Round of 16 at the Kokugikan Arena.
Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) had stormed into the quarter-finals of the women's welterweight (69-75 kg) category in the Tokyo Olympics after defeating Nadine Apetz of Germany in the Round of 16 at the Kokugikan Arena.

Argentina, France, Germany Eliminated from Tokyo Olympic Soccer

No third gold for Argentina. No return to the final for Germany. No defensive ability for France.
Some of soccer's biggest nations have fallen at the first stage in the Tokyo Olympics men's tournament, failing to advance from the group stage.
If only like Spain they weren't blocked by clubs from selecting the strongest players for this extra competition squeezed into the calendar.

Tokyo Olympics: Flora Duffy Claims Historic First Gold for Bermuda

With a population of just 63,000, Bermuda became the smallest nation or territory to win an Olympic gold medal at a summer Games when Flora Duffy won the triathlon in Tokyo.
The 33-year-old, making her fourth appearance at an Olympics, came out on top of the 56-woman field with a time of 1 hour 55 minutes 36 seconds - more than a minute ahead of Great Britain's Georgia Taylor-Brown and USA's Katie Zaferes.
Bermuda already held the record for being the least populated country to win a summer Olympic medal thanks to a bronze for boxer Clarence Hill in 1976 but now they have their first gold medal winner.

India's Lovlina Borgohain Makes Quarterfinals of Olympic Boxing

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain (69 kg) advanced to the quarterfinals in her debut Olympic appearance, defeating German veteran Nadine Apetz in a closely-fought last-16 stage bout.
Borgohain prevailed 3-2 over her rival who is 12 years her senior. Both the boxers were making their Games debut and the Indian became the first from her nine-strong team to make the quarterfinal stage.
Apetz was the first German woman to qualify for a boxing event at the Olympics. She is a two-time world championship bronze-medallist, a former European champion.

Polina Guryeva Wins Turkmenistan's First Olympic Medal

Sparsely populated and isolated from most of the outside world, Turkmenistan has finally won its first Olympic medal since independence from the Soviet Union.
Weightlifter Polina Guryeva won a silver medal for the Central Asian nation at the Tokyo Games, and then predicted she would go down in the country's history.
Guryeva lifted a total 217 kg in the 59 kg category, edging Mikiko Andoh of Japan for second place. Kuo Hsing-Chun of Taiwan won gold by lifting 236 kg.
