India to Host 2022 FIFA Under-17 Women's World Cup

  • India is all set to host 2022 FIFA under-17 Women's World Cup from October 11 to 30, 2022. It will be the second FIFA tournament to be hosted by India.
  • Earlier, India had to organise 2021 Under-17 Women's World Cup but it was cancelled due to Covid-19 pandemic. India had also hosted FIFA under-17 World Cup in 2017. The 2017 event has set a record for being the most attended youth World Cup in the history.

Sreejesh Appointed FIH Athletes' Committee Member

  • Star India hockey team goalkeeper PR Sreejesh was re-appointed as a member of the International Hockey Federation (FIH) Athletes' Committee during the virtual meeting of the world body's Executive Board. He has been a member of the panel since 2017. The experienced Sreejesh, who has led the Indian team in the past, was one of the four new members appointed by the EB which met two days before the 47th FIH Congress, which will also be held online.
  • The EB confirmed the appointment of four new members for the Athletes' Committee. Sreejesh Parattu (IND), Marlena Rybacha (POL), Mohamed Mea (RSA) and Matt Swann (AUS) are now joining the Committee. Steve Horgan (USA), the new chair of the FIH Rules Committee, succeeding David Collier.
  • The FIH Athletes Committee consists of current and former players who make recommendations to the FIH Executive Board, FIH Committees, Advisory Panels and other bodies on behalf of all athletes for the development of various resources and initiatives required for the growth of players and the sport.

India Women to Play Maiden Pink-ball Test vs Australia

  • The India women's team will play their maiden pink-ball Test later this year, against Australia in Perth, cricket boards of both the countries announced. Mithali Raj's team will take on Meg Lanning's squad at the WACA ground from September 30 in what will be only the second Day-Night Test in women's cricket, following Australia's drawn 2017 match against England in Sydney.

Argentinian President Considers Hosting Entire Copa America

  • Argentinian President Alberto Fernández has said that his country would consider hosting the entire Copa America if Colombia is unable to co-host because of social unrest.
  • It was the first time an Argentinian official publicly acknowledged the possibility of hosting the full tournament, scheduled for June 13 to July 10.
  • "We can analyze organising all of Copa America in Argentina," Fernández told radio Diez.
  • Fernández' statements came as doubts emerged about Colombia's ability to co-host the tournament amid protests against the administration of President Iván Duque. The Colombian government insists it can.

AIBA announces USD 400,000 Prize Fund for Asian Boxing Championships

  • In an unprecedented move, the International Boxing Association (AIBA) announced a prize fund of USD 400,000 for the upcoming Asian Championships in Dubai, which will also feature India's top pugilists.
  • The tournament, which was originally planned in India but shifted to Dubai because of the COVID-19 pandemic, begins on May 24. It will feature both the men's women's competitions.
  • For the boxers who take first place, both men and women, the award is USD 10,000. For the second, the prize money is USD 5,000 and for both bronze medallists, it is USD 2,500 USD each.
  • AIBA President Umar Kremlev said that the decision will motivate the boxers to do their best.
