England into Euro 2020 Semifinals

Harry Kane scored twice and England overwhelmed Ukraine 4-0 to reach the European Championship semifinals.
It was the only match of Euro 2020 that England had to play away from Wembley Stadium and it was the team's most dominant performance of the tournament.
It marked the first time that England scored four goals in the knockout stage of a major tournament since beating West Germany 4-2 in the 1966 World Cup final.
England now goes back to London to face Denmark. The Danes beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in Baku.
The last time England made it to the last four of the European Championship was in 1996.

Mariyappan Thangavelu Named Flag-bearer for Tokyo Paralympics

Top para high-jumper Mariyappan Thangavelu was named the flag-bearer of the Indian contingent in the Tokyo Paralympics, which begins on August 24.
Thangavelu, who is defending the T-42 gold he had won in the 2016 Rio Paralympics, was picked for the honour by the executive committee of the national body.
Thangavelu, who was conferred with the Khel Ratna, the country's highest sporting award, last year is one of the 24 para-athletes picked by the selection committee for the Tokyo Paralympics.

Norway's Karsten Warholm Sets World Record in Men's 400 m Hurdles

Norway's Karsten Warholm broke Kevin Young's 29-year-old 400 m hurdles world record when he completed the race in 46.70 seconds at the Diamond League meeting in Oslo.
Warholm beat 1992 Olympic champion Young's mark of 46.78secs, which was set four years before the Norwegian was born and was the longest-standing record in men's track.

Mithali Raj Becomes Highest Run-getter in Women's Cricket across Formats

Indian women's cricket team skipper Mithali Raj became the top run-getter in international cricket across all formats, surpassing former England batter Charlotte Edwards.
Mithali struck a boundary over England pace bowler Natalie Sciver's head when on 11 to go past the 10,273 runs scored by Charlotte. The boundary helped Mithali get to 10,277 runs.
The bulk of Mithali's runs have come in ODI cricket in which she has collected over 7,200 runs. She has scored 669 runs in Test cricket and 2,364 in T20 International cricket.
She is the only woman cricketer to have scored over 6,000 runs and averages over 50 in ODI cricket. Charlotte is the next best in the list of ODI run-getters with 5,992 runs.

Jabir Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics in 400 m Hurdles

Ace athlete of the Indian Navy, MP Jabir, has qualified for the Tokyo Olympics in 400 m hurdles after he clocked 49.78s to win gold at the Inter-State Athletiss Shamrionshirs in Ratiala.
Jabir qualified through the World ranking quota where there are 14 spots available. He is currently ranked 34th in the World Athletics' Road to Olympics rankings where 40 athletes qualify.
When he competes in the Tokyo Olympics, Jabir would be the first Indian male athlete to participate in the 400m hurdles in Olympics.

WAKO India Kickboxing Federation Gets Government Recognition

Sports Ministry has decided to recognise WAKO India Kickboxing Federation as a National Sports Federation (NSF) to promote and develop sport in India.
WAKO India Kickboxing Federation is affiliated to World Association of Kickboxing Organizations (WAKO) which is a world body for kickboxing.
Since November 30, 2020; WAKO has been a provisionally recognised member of International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Recommendation to approve WAKO as fully recognised member of Olympic family was taken by IOC in June 2020.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board has approved recommendation for WAKO on June 10, 2021 to become a fully recognized member of Olympic family of sport.
WAKO is an international organization of kickboxing. It certifies the governing body of amateur kickboxing to develop support & govern amateur level and hold world championship events. It sanctions the champions of kickboxing. WAKO is the only organisation across the world which is recognised by GAISF (Global Association of Sports Federations) and IOC (International Olympic Committee).

Maana Patel Gets Olympics Confirmation through Universality Quota

Indian woman swimmer Maana Patel's participation in the Tokyo Olympics has been confirmed through 'Universality quota', the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) said.
Maana will take part in the 100 m backstroke at the Tokyo Games and is the third Indian swimmer to have qualified after both Srihari Nataraj and Sajan Prakash achieved Olympic Qualification Timing (OQT) 'A' level.
The Universality quota allows one male and one female competitor from a country to participate in the Olympics, provided no other swimmer from the same gender qualifies for the Games or receives a FINA invite based on his or her Olympic Selection time (B time).

Abhimanyu Mishra Becomes Youngest ever Chess Grandmaster

Indian-American prodigy Abhimanyu Mishra became the youngest ever chess Grandmaster after he scored his third GM norm in Budapest, Hungary.
The 12-year-old from New Jersey in United States became a GM from International Master, having crossed the required 2500 Elo rating barrier.
Mishra broke GM Sergey Karjakin's record that has stood for 19 years.

Devendra Jhajharia Rewrites World record for Tokyo Berth

India's top Paralympian and javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia rewrote his own world record once again as he punched his ticket for the Tokyo Paralympics during a national selection trial in New Delhi. The 40-year-old, who has won two gold medals in the men's F-46 category at the Paralympics, sent the spear to a distance of 65.71 m during the trial.
With that effort, he not only sealed a spot for the Tokyo Paralympics but also bettered his own world record of 63.97 m, set at the Rio Games in 2016.
The Tokyo Paralympics slated to begin on August 24, will be Jhajharia's third Paralympics. He had won a gold at the 2004 Athens Paralympic Games, setting a new world record of 62.15 metres.

Dutee Chand Qualifies for Tokyo Olympics

Ace Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has qualified for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics in both 100 m and 200 m races via the World Rankings quota.
As many as 22 spots were available in 100m and 15 spots in 200m via the World Rankings route.
Chand's overall position of World No. 44 in 100 m and World No. 51 in 200 m were well within the ranks to make her eligible to fly to Tokyo.

Discus Thrower Seema Punia Books Tokyo Olympics Berth

Discus thrower Seema Punia, bronze medallist at the 2018 Jakarta Asian Games, booked her ticket for the Tokyo Olympic Games with a gold medal-winning throw of a 63.72 m on the concluding day of the National Inter-State Athletics Championships.
Seema, 37, bettered the Olympic qualification mark of 63.50 m. Her performance was also better than the meet record of 62.49 m, set by Neelam J. Singh in 2000 in Chennai.
