May Shelves Plan for Third Vote on Brexit

  •  British Prime Minister Theresa May has shelved plans for a third vote on her withdrawal agreement as she acknowledged that she still was unable to muster the necessary parliamentary majority, despite a series of meetings with Conservative MPs, the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland, and Labour Party to attempt to find a road ahead.

Golan Heights Belongs to Israel

  •  U.S. President Donald Trump declared that the Golan Heights belongs to Israel.
  • Mr. Netanyahu spared no praise as he watched Mr. Trump sign the Golan proclamation at the White House.
  • The Jewish state captured the territory from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967.

Ranil Lays Foundation Stone for Oil Refinery

  •  Sri Lankan Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe laid the foundation stone for a nearly $4-billion oil refinery in the southern port town of Hambantota.
  • The project will come up at the investment zone next to a port that Sri Lanka has leased out to a Chinese state-run firm for 99 years.
  • The mega project has drawn much interest in the past week, after Sri Lanka's Board of Investment (BOI) announced that a Singapore-registered firm, along with Oman, was bringing in the investment.
  • Soon after, Reuters quoted an Omani official as saying the country had no role in the project.

Voting in Thailand

  •  Thailand voters went to the polls in a long-delayed election following a 2014 coup, in a race that pits a military junta chief seeking to retain power against a democratic front led by the populist party he ousted.
  • Thailand has been under direct military rule since then army chief Prayuth Chan-ocha overthrew an elected government linked to exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who himself was thrown out by the army in 2006.

Italy Signs New Silk Road Protocol

  •  Italy signed a non-binding protocol with China to take part in Beijing's new Silk Road of transport and trade links stretching from Asia to Europe.
  • Italy has become the first G7 country to sign up for the massive project which has sparked unease in the U.S. and the European Union (EU) as China aspires to a greater world role.

North Korea Quits Liaison Office

  •  North Korea said that it was quitting the joint liaison office set up in September in the border city of Kaesong after a historic summit between leader Kim Jong Un and South Korea's President Moon Jae in early 2018.
  • The move came after the US blacklisted two Chinese shipping companies it says helped North Korea evade sanctions over its nuclear programme and cited 67 vessels it said engaged in illicit trade helping the North.

EU Gives U.K. New Brexit Deadlines

  •  Brexit is to be delayed till April 12 at the earliest, after European leaders agreed to a modified version of Theresa May's request for an extension.
  • Now, if Ms. May's withdrawal deal is passed by MPs next week, then Brexit will be delayed till May 22, the day before elections to the European Parliament are set to take place.
  • The European Council said that if it fails, then the U.K. will be given time till April 12, two weeks after the date the U.K. had been set to leave the EU, to come up with a plan.
  • This means in practice is that until that date, all options will remain open, and the cliff-edge will be delayed.
  • Britain still had the choice between a deal, no-deal, a long extension and revoking Article 50.

Afghan Presidential Election Delayed

  •  War-torn Afghanistan has delayed its presidential election until September 28. This is the second time the ballot has been put back.
  • The election was originally scheduled for April 20, then delayed to July 20.

Short Brexit Delay Possible

  •  As Britain's political crisis continued to unfold, European Council President Donald Tusk said that a short extension to Article 50 would be conditional on a positive vote in the House of Commons.
  • The length of that conditional extension is yet to be determined, as the European Commission and the Council indicated their concerns about the U.K.'s proposal for an extension till June 30.
  • Any extension beyond May 23, when European parliamentary election is due to take place, would pose institutional difficulties and legal uncertainty.
  • Prime Minister Theresa May wrote to EU Council President Donald Tusk, seeking a short extension to Article 50 till June 30, and insisting that she would press ahead with another vote on her withdrawal deal.

Tougher Sanctions on Venezuela

  •  As per President Donald Trump, the United States could impose harsher sanctions on Venezuela in its campaign to oust President Nicolas Maduro.
  • Both Brazil and the United States have voiced support for Venezuelan Opposition leader Juan Guaido, who has been recognised as the country's legitimate leader by about 50 countries.
  • In a bid to force a change of leadership, the United States has imposed oil sanctions on Venezuela as well as sanctions on individuals associated with the government of Mr. Maduro, who charges that he is the target of a U.S. coup plot.

Kazakhstan Renames Capital

  •  Kazakhstan's new interim President was sworn in following the shock resignation of the country's long-time ruler, and in his first official act renamed the capital after his predecessor.
  • Kassym-Jomart Tokayev took office in less than 24 hours after Nursultan Nazarbayev, the only leader an independent Kazakhstan had ever known, suddenly announced resignation.
  • Mr. Tokayev immediately proposed changing the name of the Central Asian nation's capital from Astana to Nursultan, or 'Sultan of Light' in Kazakh, and Parliament approved the change within hours.
  • The Senate also appointed Mr. Nazarbayev's eldest daughter Dariga Nazarbayeva as Speaker, setting her up as a potential contender to succeed her father.
  • Mr. Tokayev, 65, will serve out the rest of Mr. Nazarbayev's mandate until election due in April next year.
