Mamata Banerjee Launches New Programme, Allots Rs 10 Lakh A Booth

  • Ahead of elections in the state, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced a new government initiative -- 'Amader Para, Amader Samadhan' (Our locality, our solution).
  • Terming it the first of its kind in the country, Banerjee said that the new programme will look at resolving public grievances at the grassroot level - like a broken tap creating water supply issue, or broken road.
  • The programme, she said, will begin from August 2, and camps will be set up every three blocks.
  • The state government will sanction Rs. 10 lakh per booth and the project will cost Rs. 8,000 crore.

Deepak Bagla Appointed as Mission Director of Atal Innovation Mission

  • The Government of India appointed Deepak Bagla as the new Mission Director of the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), which plays a critical role in promoting innovation and entrepreneurship across the country. Bagla brings with him a strong background in investment facilitation and policy leadership.
  • The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) is a flagship initiative under the NITI Aayog, launched to foster innovation and support start-ups. It aims to build an ecosystem that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills, particularly among students and budding entrepreneurs.
  • Deepak Bagla, who previously served as Managing Director & CEO of Invest India, now heads AIM. He has significant experience representing India on international platforms and was also President of the World Association of Investment Promotion Agencies (WAIPA).

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns

  • In a surprise late-evening development, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar announced resignation from his post, leaving the Opposition in disbelief and fuelled a flurry of speculation in political circles. He had two years to go for the end of his five-year tenure, citing health concerns.
  • His resignation, addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, was with immediate effect.
  • He was the 14th Vice President of India.

National Conference on Making Cities Cyber Secure

  • With the increasing digitalisation of city functions, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), convened the National Conference on Making Cities Cyber Secure at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • The conference brought together key stakeholders from Central Ministries, National Cybersecurity Agencies, State Governments, and Urban Local Bodies to address the growing cybersecurity challenges facing India's cities and develop a collective roadmap for enhancing resilience.

Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited Gets New MD

  • The Karnataka government appointed 2001-batch IAS officer Dr J Ravishankar as the new Managing Director (MD) of Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), replacing Maheshwar Rao, who held the position on an additional charge. This change in leadership comes amid public outcry over fare hikes and ahead of the planned launch of the Yellow Line in Bengaluru's metro network.

Arjun Ram Meghwal Launches Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh

  • In a move to promote women's health and well-being within government workplaces, the Department of Legal Affairs under the Ministry of Law and Justice inaugurated the Mahila Aarogyam Kaksh at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi. This first-of-its-kind fitness and wellness space is exclusively designed for women employees, transforming unused office space into a dedicated facility supporting physical and mental health.

India-Argentina Hold 2nd JWG Meeting on Agriculture

  • The second Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting on Agriculture between India and Argentina was held, with the Indian Co-chair, Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare, joining the session virtually. The meeting was co-chaired by Sergio Iraeta, Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, from the Argentina side. Both sides underscored the significance of the meeting as a key milestone in deepening bilateral cooperation in the fields of agriculture and allied sectors.
