President Kovind, PM Modi Attend 51st Conference of Governors, LGs

  • President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the Conference of Governors and Lieutenant Governors at Rashtrapati Bhawan in the national capital.
  • Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah were also present at the Conference.
  • This will be the fourth conference to be presided over by President Kovind.

India, Sri Lanka Revive Parliament Friendship Association

  • India and Sri Lanka have set up Parliamentary Friendship Association, with Minister Chamal Rajapaksa, the eldest brother in Sri Lanka's ruling clan, as its president.
  • The association existed in the past and has been revived for the current Parliament, elected in August 2020.
  • Speaking at an event held at the Parliament complex here, Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister G.L. Peiris pointed to "close civilisational ties" between India and Sri Lanka, while observing that the "greatest gift" of India to Sri Lanka was Buddhism.
  • Indian High Commissioner Gopal Baglay said that the association would "reinvigorate" Parliamentary exchanges between the two democracies and strengthen bilateral ties.

AAP to Project OBC as CM Face, Catholic as Deputy CM in Goa Assembly Polls 2022

  • In a bid to lure the politically crucial OBC segment in Goa, referred to locally as the `bahujan samaj`, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said that his AAP`s Chief Minister face in the upcoming Assembly polls would be from the OBC community and a Catholic the Deputy Chief Minister candidate.
  • Sisodia also said that the OBC community in Goa, which is the state`s largest caste collective, had been deprived of political leadership in the state since 60 years of its Liberation.

Cabinet Okays Birsa Munda Birth Anniversary as Janjatiya Gaurav Divas

  • The Union Cabinet decided to declare November 15 as 'Janjatiya Gaurav Divas' to mark the birth anniversary of revered tribal leader and freedom fighter Birsa Munda and honour the contributions of the members of Scheduled Tribes to Indian history and culture.
  • The decision was taken at a meeting of the Union Cabinet presided by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Amit Mitra Appointed as Princiapl Chief Advisor to WB CM Mamata Banerjee

  • Former West Bengal Finance Minister Amit Mitra was appointed as the principal chief advisor to WB Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the finance department.
  • The six-month tenure of Mitra as the Finance Minister came to an end last week and since he did not contest the bypolls his department went under the control of the Chief Minister. An economist by profession, Mitra expressed his inability to continue as the Finance Minister owing to his fragile health.

Punjab Cabinet Accepts Resignation of AG APS Deol

  • Bowing to pressure from State Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, the Punjab government led by Charanjit Singh Channi removed A.P.S. Deol as Advocate General. The move was a key pre-condition of Mr. Sidhu for resuming his duties as the Punjab Congress Committee chief, even as he withdrew his resignation last week.
  • "As far as the appointment of new DGP is concerned, we have already forwarded the names to the Centre," the Chief Minister said.

Govt. Launches First-ever Mentorship Programme for Young Innovators

  • Union Minister Jitendra Singh launched the first-ever mentorship programme for young innovators to mark the 75th year of India's independence.
  • The government is taking a number of steps to promote scientific temper among the masses, particularly youngsters, by strengthening scientific research and innovation efforts in the country.
  • The DBT-Star College Mentorship Programme' will help towards the concept of networking, hand holding and outreach, said Singh who is the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science and Technology.
  • The pan India scheme envisages a Star College' in every district of the country supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), under the Science and Technology Ministry.
  • The plan envisages organising workshops and meetings every month, handhold colleges particularly in the rural areas or lesser endowed areas and conduct outreach activities with government schools.

Karnataka Rechristens Mumbai-Karnataka Region as Kittur Karnataka

  • The Mumbai-Karnataka region was renamed as 'Kittur Karnataka', said state Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J. C. Madhuswamy.
  • This came days after state Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai announced that the renaming process will take place in the coming days.
  • The name Kittur comes after a historical taluk in Belagavi district in north Karnataka that was ruled by Rani Chennamma (1778-1829). Kittur Rani Chennamma had fought against the British for freedom about 40 years before Jhansi Rani Laxmibai.

Srinagar Joins UNESCO Creative Cities Network

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the people of Jammu and Kashmir over Srinagar joining the UNESCO Creative Cities Network with a special mention for its craft and folk art, and said that it is a fitting recognition for the vibrant cultural ethos of the city.
  • Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, was among 49 cities worldwide to join the UNESCO creative cities network (UCCN).
  • The 49 cities were added to the network of 246 cities following their designation by UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, in recognition of "their commitment to placing culture and creativity at the heart of their development and to sharing knowledge and good practices.

Cochin Airport, First to Run Fully on Solar Power, Launches Hydro Project

  • The Cochin International Airport Ltd (CIAL), which is the world's first fully solar-powered airport, commissioned its own hydroelectric project, now taking pioneering strides in the production of sustainable energy. With the hydro plant commissioned, CIAL aims to provide power to the KSEB grid from its plant at Arippara near Kozhikode.
  • According to CIAL, the hydroelectric plant is a "run-of-river" project, which uses the natural downward flow of rivers and microturbine generators to capture the kinetic energy carried by water. CIAL constructed a weir dam across the Iruvazhinji River and hydro-mechanical and electro-mechanical systems at Arippara, near Kodencheri in Kozhikode district.

Ministry of Civil Aviation Declares Srinagar Airport as 'Major Airport'

  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation declared the Srinagar International airport as a "Major Airport".
  • Notably, in October, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated international flight operations at Srinagar airport.
  • Shah inaugurated the first direct international flight between Srinagar and Sharjah and United Arab Emirates (UAE) there.
