Santosh Jha Assumes Role as India's New Envoy to Sri Lanka

  • India's diplomatic ties with Sri Lanka took a new turn with the appointment of Santosh Jha as the country's new High Commissioner. In a significant ceremony held in Colombo, Jha officially assumed charge and presented his credentials to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.
  • Santosh Jha brings with him a wealth of diplomatic experience, having served in various key positions throughout his career.
  • Prior to his assignment in Colombo, Jha held the prestigious position of India's Ambassador to the European Union, Belgium & Luxembourg.
  • His diplomatic journey also included a term as the Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan from 2019 to 2020 and a pivotal role as the Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington DC from 2017 to 2019.

India, Russia Ink Pact to Build more Nuclear Power Plants

  • India and Russia signed an agreement to build more nuclear power units in the country, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced in Moscow.
  • The project was signed during the meeting between Jaishankar and Russian Trade Minister Denis Mansurov. But the announcement of more contracts to Russia came even as the proposal to allow the US to build similar plants made scant progress despite US President Joe Biden making a renewed push in the last two summits with PM Narendra Modi.
  • India is already operating two Russia-built nuclear plants while another four are under construction in Kudankulam.

Plane with Indians Grounded in France Lands in Mumbai

  • The airplane with around 300 Indian passengers on board detained near Paris over suspicions of human trafficking landed in Mumbai, India.
  • The plane was grounded for four days.
  • However, of the 303 Indian passengers, only 276 returned, while the rest have applied for asylum and have been transferred to a special zone in Paris' Charles de Gaulle airport for asylum-seekers.
  • The flight had taken off from Dubai, UAE, carrying 303 passengers, and was headed to Nicaragua, was grounded at the Vatry airport.

Madhya Pradesh CM Mohan Yadav Expands Cabinet

  • In the first cabinet expansion of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav-led BJP government as 28 MLAs took oath as new ministers. While eighteen BJP MLAs took oath as cabinet ministers, six others were sworn in as Ministers of State (Independent Charge) and four as state ministers.
  • People who took oath as cabinet ministers were: Pradhyuman Singh Tomar, Tulsi Silavat, Adal Singh Kasana, Narayan Singh Kushwaha, Vijay Shah, Rakesh Singh, Prahlad Patel, Kailash Vijayvargiya, Karan Singh Verma, Sampatiya Uikey, Uday Pratap Singh, Nirmala Bhuria, Vishwas Sarang, Govind Singh Rajput, Inder Singh Parmar, Nagar Singh Chauhan, Chaitanya Kashyap and Rakesh Shukla.

Vasudev Devnani is Speaker of Rajasthan Assembly

  • The 16th Rajasthan Assembly witnessed a significant development as Vasudev Devnani, a seasoned BJP MLA with five terms under his belt, was unanimously elected as the Speaker. The motion for his appointment was moved by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma and seconded by Congress leader and Tonk MLA Sachin Pilot, reflecting a rare unity between the ruling party and the opposition.
  • Vasudev Devnani, representing Ajmer North, has been a prominent face of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) in the BJP governments led by Vasundhara Raje. His political journey includes two terms as the Education Minister.

Sachin Pilot Gets Key Role in Congress' Major Reshuffle Ahead of Polls

  • Sachin Pilot was appointed Congress General Secretary in-charge of Chhattisgarh as the party continues its organisational overhaul with an eye on the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was replaced as the party's Uttar Pradesh in charge.
  • She continues to be the party's General Secretary "without any assigned portfolio. Avinash Pandey replaced her in the state.
  • Sachin Pilot's appointment is being seen as a move to pacify the leader, who has been seeking a greater role in the party. Pilot's dissatisfaction with the party's Rajasthan leadership almost cost Congress the desert state mid-term in 2020, when the disgruntled leader, then the Deputy Chief Minister, led a coup against Ashok Gehlot.

  • Congress constituted manifesto committee for the upcoming 2024 general elections and appointed former UNION Minister, P. Chidambaram as the chairman. Former Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister T. S. Singh Deo was given the charge of Convenor of the committee.
  • The 16-member panel includes Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. Former Union Ministers Anand Sharma, Jairam Ramesh and Shashi Tharoor are also part of the committee.

Chhattisgarh CM Expands Cabinet, Inducts Nine Ministers

  • Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expanded his state cabinet with the induction of nine new ministers. Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs Brijmohan Agrawal, Ramvichar Netam, Dayaldas Baghel, Kedar Kashyap, Lakhanlal Dewangan, Shyam Bihari Jaiswal, OP Choudhary, Tank Ram Verma and Laxmi Rajwade were administered oath by Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan.
  • This took the strength of the Sai-led cabinet to 12. Before this, the cabinet had three members – Chief Minister Sai and Deputy CMs Arun Sao and Vijay Sharma.
  • Chhattisgarh can have a maximum of 13 ministers, including the CM.

  • The Jute Corporation of India launched an app that would provide vital knowledge to farmers on various issues for optimal jute cultivation and maximisation of income.
  • Rachna Shah, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, launched the 'Paat-Mitro' app.
  • It would also feature information on jute gradation parametres, farmer-centric schemes like 'Jute-ICARE', weather forecasts and procurement policies.
  • 'Paat-Mitro' marks a significant step forward in supporting jute farmers and revitalising the industry.

French President Emmanuel Macron to be Chief Guest for 2024 Republic Day

  • French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest for the 75th Republic Day celebrations to be held on January 26, 2024.
  • Macron had also visited India for the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023.
  • This year (2023), both countries are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the India-France Strategic Partnership.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the guest of honour at the Bastille Day Parade held on July 14, 2023, in Paris.
  • This will be the sixth time a French leader will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations in the national capital.
