Commemorative Postage Stamp Released for 25th Anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas

  • The Department of Posts released a commemorative postage stamp at Dras, Kargil in Ladakh, marking the Silver Jubilee of Kargil Vijay Diwas.
  • The newly issued stamp pays tribute to the heroes of the Kargil conflict and their enduring legacy. The widespread media coverage of the war, facilitated by satellite television, brought the valour of soldiers into every Indian home, making places like Kargil, Batalik, Dras, Mashkoh, and Turtuk symbols of national pride. This stamp not only commemorates the historical victory but also ensures that the bravery and sacrifices of the soldiers are honoured and remembered by future generations.

BJP Appoints New State Chief for Bihar, Rajasthan

  • The BJP named new state unit chiefs in Bihar and Rajasthan.
  • According to a statement issued by party national General Secretary Arun Singh, party chief J. P. Nadda appointed Dilip Jaiswal as the new chief of the Bihar state unit. Jaiswal, a member of the state Legislative Council, replaced Samrat Chaudhary, now the Deputy Chief Minister.
  • Rajya Sabha member Madan Rathore was appointed the new party chief in Rajasthan, replacing C. P. Joshi.

PM Chairs 9th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 9th Governing Council Meeting of NITI Aayog, at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre, New Delhi. This year's (2024) theme is 'Viksit Bharat@2047', with a central focus on making India a developed nation.
  • The Governing Council Meeting discussed the Approach Paper for the Vision Document on Viksit Bharat @2047. The meeting aimed to foster participative governance and collaboration between the Centre and State Governments, enhancing the quality of life for both rural and urban populations by strengthening the delivery mechanisms of government interventions.

Centre Clears Urban Flood Management Projects of 5 States

  • To fulfil Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of disaster resilient India, Ministry of Home Affairs under the guidance of Home Minister, Amit Shah has taken several initiatives to ensure effective management of disasters in the country. A number of steps have been taken to prevent any extensive loss to life and property during disasters by strengthening disaster risk reduction system in India.
  • The High-Level Committee in a meeting approved six project proposals in the states of Telangana, Gujarat, Karnataka, West Bengal and Maharashtra at a total cost of Rs. 2514.36 crore for Urban Flood Management in six metro cities, namely Mumbai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Pune.

PM Modi Launches Shinkun La Tunnel Construction

  • On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ladakh, where he launched the construction of the Shinkun La Tunnel project, set to be the world's highest tunnel.
  • The 4.1-kilometre-long twin-tube tunnel will be constructed at an altitude of approximately 15,800 feet on the Nimu-Padum-Darcha road. The tunnel, to be constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at Rs. 1,681 crore, was approved by the PM-led cabinet committee on security in February 2023. The Shinkun La Tunnel, with cross-passages every 500 metres, is projected to be completed in two years.

Government Setting Up 7 PM MITRA Parks with World Class Infrastructure

  • The Government approved setting up of 7 (Seven) PM Mega Integrated Textile Region. Apparel (PM MITRA) Parks in Greenfield/Brownfield sites (including a Greenfield project in Virudhanagar, Tamil Nadu) with world class infrastructure including plug and play facility with an outlay of Rs. 4,445 crore for a period of seven years upto 2027-28.
  • It is envisaged that each park when completed will generate 1 lakh direct and 2 lakh indirect employments. In order to implement the PM MITRA Scheme in Virudhnagar, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) i.e. 'PM Mega Integrated Textile Regions and Apparel Park, Tamil Nadu Limited' has been incorporated with Government of Tamil Nadu holding 51% stake in the SPV and remaining 49% being held by the Government of India.

  • President Droupadi Murmu announced the renaming of two halls of Rashtrapati Bhavan – Durbar Hall and Ashok Hall – as Ganatantra Mandap and Ashok Mandap, respectively. The Durbar Hall is the venue of important ceremonies and celebrations such as the presentation of National Awards. The Ashok Hall, originally a ballroom, is now used for special events.

  • In a significant milestone for India's community radio landscape, Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated the country's 500th community radio station, Apna Radio 90.0 FM, at the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC) in Aizawl, Mizoram. This event underscores the government's commitment to the Act East policy and marks a key development in enhancing local communication and information dissemination.

Garg Replaces Rupani as BJP's Chandigarh Affairs In-charge

  • Atul Garg replaced former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani as the Bharatiya Janata Party in-charge of Chandigarh affairs.
  • The decision to appoint the new in-charge was announced in a late night organisational reshuffle by the BJP.
  • BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda, who is also the Union Minister for Health, replaced Chittorgarh Lok Sabha MP CP Joshi with MP Madan Rathore as the Rajasthan BJP president.
  • In Bihar, the BJP named MLC Dilip Jaiswal the new state president. New in-charges were also named for other states, including Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Assam and Lakshadweep.

Department of Posts Releases Beta Version of DIGIPIN for Public Comments and Expert Opinion

  • Department of Posts is advancing an initiative to establish a standardised, geo-coded addressing system in India, for ensuring simplified addressing solutions for citizen-centric delivery of public and private services. In this regard, the Department had collaborated with IIT Hyderabad for developing a National Addressing Grid, named as Digital Postal Index Number (DIGIPIN). This system will act as a strong and robust pillar of Geospatial Governance, leading to enhancements in public service delivery, faster emergency response and a significant boost to logistics efficiency.
  • The DIGIPIN layer will act as the addressing reference system which can be used for logically locating addresses with directional properties built into it due to the logical naming pattern followed in its construction.
  • The DIGIPIN is proposed to be fully available in the public domain and can be easily accessed by everyone. The DIGIPIN Grid system being an addressing referencing system, can be used as the base layer for other ecosystems, including various service providers and utilities, where addressing is one of the processes in the workflow.

India 'Reopens' Embassy in Libya after Five Years

  • After a gap of five years, India reopened its embassy in Tripoli, Libya's foreign ministry led by its Government of National Unity (GNU) announced. The development marks a significant step in enhancing diplomatic relations between the two nations.
  • The first Indian diplomat reached the country after a gap of several years. Dr. Mohd. Aleem was appointed as the Charge d'Affaires (CdA) at the reopened Indian Embassy in Tripoli, Libya. Previously, Dr. Aleem served as the Under Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs' (MEA) West Asia & North Africa Division (WANA).
