Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy Becomes World No.1 Bowler in T20I

  • Spinner Varun Chakaravarthy became the World No one bowler in the ICC T20 international rankings.
  • The 34-year-old became the third Indian bowler to achieve this feat, after Jasprit Bumrah and Ravi Bishnoi. India's Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav have also moved up the rankings.
  • Patel is now at the 12th spot while the Kuldeep Yadav is now at the 16th spot, rising seven spots from his 23rd slot.
  • Chakaravarthy shown his class with a string of strong performances that has helped him overtake New Zealand pacer Jacob Duffy at the top of the T20I bowling rankings.

Samuel Umtiti Retires from Football at Age 31

  • In September 2025, Samuel Umtiti, the 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning French defender, officially announced his retirement from professional football.
  • Once regarded as one of the finest centre-backs in Europe, Umtiti's career was tragically derailed by chronic knee injuries that restricted his playing time and eventually forced an early exit from the sport.

  • Umtiti began his professional career at Olympique Lyonnais, quickly established himself as a technically gifted, strong, and intelligent defender.
  • His performances earned him a high-profile transfer to FC Barcelona in 2016, where he initially flourished.
  • Umtiti's crowning achievement came during the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, where he formed a solid central defensive partnership with Raphaël Varane. He scored the winning goal in the semi-final against Belgium, helping France reach the final and eventually lift the trophy after defeating Croatia 4–2.

Apollo Tyres New Jersey Sponsor of Indian Cricket Team, Deal Worth Rs. 579 Crore

  • In 2025, Apollo Tyres acquired the jersey sponsorship rights of the Indian cricket team under a five-year agreement lasting until March 31, 2028.
  • The agreement covers around 140 matches, including bilateral series and International Cricket Council (ICC) events.
  • Apollo Tyres pays the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approximately INR 4.5 crore for each bilateral match and INR 1.72 crore for each ICC match.
  • The overall value of the deal is estimated at around INR 579 crore.

Duleep Trophy 2025l: Central Zone Secures Title

  • Central Zone defeated South Zone by six wickets on the final day of their Duleep Trophy summit clash at the BCCI CoE Ground (1) in Bengaluru.
  • Needing 65 runs to lay claim to the title, Central lost four wickets but managed to reach the target in the morning session.
  • This was Central's first Duleep Trophy triumph since the Piyush Chawla-led side took top honours in the 2014-15 edition.
  • The 2025–26 Duleep Trophy was the 62nd edition of the Duleep Trophy, a domestic first-class cricket competition played in India. It concluded on September 15, 2025.
  • The tournament returned to a zonal format, featuring six teams: Central Zone, East Zone, North Zone, North East Zone, South Zone, and West Zone. All squads were picked by national selectors.

Mohammed Siraj Named ICC Player of the Month of August

  • Mohammed Siraj won the ICC Men's Player of the Month accolade for August, 2025 for his persistent, match-winning spell against England in The Oval Test, which was the only match he was a part of, in the month.
  • An outstanding spell by Siraj, where he picked up nine wickets at an average of 21.11 across both innings, helped India to not just win the Test from a tricky situation but also made sure the well-fought series ended at 2-2.

  • Ireland's premier all-rounder Orla Prendergast was named as the ICC Women's Player of the Month for August 2025.
  • Prendergast edged out stern competition from Netherlands all-round counterpart Iris Zwilling and Pakistan wicket-keeper Muneeba Ali and claimed the honour.

FIDE Grand Swiss: Vaishali Makes History By Winning Title Again

  • Vaishali Rameshbabu won the FIDE Grand Swiss tournament in 2025 for the second time in two editions after drawing her final game against former women's world champion Tan Zhongyi on Monday.
  • Vaishali winning the title is historic because no player in the short history of the event has won the Grand Swiss twice.
  • Even more significantly, Vaishali's win helped her secure a Candidates spot, thus making her the third woman to qualify for the Candidates along with Koneru Humpy and Divya Deshmukh.
