Conservation Plan for Great Indian Bustard

  • In order to conserve and protect the Great Indian Bustard, which is considered one of the largest flying birds in the world, the Government of India is implementing various measures throughout the country. However, apart from certain regions in Rajasthan and Gujarat, the bird has disappeared from 90% of its original habitat. The International Union for Conservation of Nature classified the species as "critically endangered."
  • The species is known for its distinctive appearance, with a brownish-grey body, long neck, and crown of black feathers on its head. Unfortunately, due to habitat loss and hunting, the Great Indian Bustard has become critically endangered and is now found only in small pockets of its original range in India and Pakistan.

Centre to Soon Notify Dibang Tiger Reserve

  • The Union environment ministry will soon notify the Dibang Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh, a development that makes it even less likely that the deferred Etalin hydropower project will be developed in the way it was originally envisaged -- but the indigenous Idu Mishmi people, who were opposed to the hydropower project aren't very keen on the tiger reserve either.
  • Once notified, Dibang will be India's first high altitude tiger reserve and the largest in terms of area, at 4149 sq km. The Idu Mishmi are worried that naming Dibang a tiger reserve will restrict their access to the reserve.

New Species of Moray Eel Discovered off Cuddalore Coast

  • A team of scientists from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) discovered a new species of Moray Eel fish from the Cuddalore coast in Tamil Nadu. The new species was named "Gymnothorax Tamilnaduensis" after Tamil Nadu and was given the common name of "Tamil Nadu brown moray eel".
  • After conducting an extensive exploration survey and analysis of the fish's morphology, skeleton radiography and molecular markers, the researchers concluded that it is a distinct species of the genus Gymnothorax.
  • This discovery increased the number of Gymnothorax species in Indian waters from 28 to 29, and is the first to be found in the south-eastern coast of India in the Bay of Bengal.
