PM Modi Participates in Virtual India-EU Leaders' Meeting

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the India-EU Leaders' Meeting, held in a hybrid format. The India-European Union Leaders' Meeting is hosted by Portugal. Portugal currently holds the chair of the grouping. PM Modi attended the event at the invitation of the President of the European Council Mr Charles Michel.
  • The leaders of all the 27 EU Member States, as well as the President of the European Council and the European Commission, participated in the meeting. This is the first time that the EU hosted a meeting with India in the EU+27 format.

India Strongly Condemns Terrorist Attack on Girls school in Afghanistan

  • India has strongly condemned the terrorist attack on Sayed al-Shuhada Girls School in Kabul, which killed more than 50 girl students during the holy month of Ramadan. External Affairs Ministry said in a release that India's thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the young girls who lost their lives in this attack.
  • It said, targeting young girl students, makes this an attack on the future of Afghanistan. The perpetrators clearly seek to destroy the painstaking and hard-won achievements that the Afghans have put in place over the last two decades.
  • New Delhi said, this incident demonstrates, once again, the urgent need for dismantling terrorist sanctuaries and the immediate need for a comprehensive nation-wide ceasefire to make the peace process meaningful and sustainable. It said, India has always supported the education of Afghan youth and remains committed to the progress and development of Afghanistan.

PESCO: EU Approves US Participation for the First Time

  • The European Union approved the requests of Norway, Canada and United States to participate in Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) defence initiative. This is the first time; the European bloc has allowed a third state to participate in the PESCO project. The countries will now participate in the Military Mobility Project in Europe.
  • PESCO is a part of the European Union security and defence policy. It was introduced based on the Treaty of European Union introduced by Treaty of Lisbon in 2009.
  • The United States has raised concerns against PESCO several times. According to analysts, it is the sign that US fears loss of influence in Europe. The US sells 1 billion Euros of weapons to the European Union countries every year.

China Probed 'Weaponising' Coronaviruses in 2015: Reports

  • Chinese military scientists allegedly investigated weaponising coronaviruses five years before the COVID-19 pandemic and may have predicted a World War III fought with biological weapons, according to media reports referring to documents obtained by the US State Department.
  • According to 'The Sun' newspaper in the UK, quoting reports first released by 'The Australian', the "bombshell" documents obtained by the US State Department reportedly show the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) commanders making the sinister prediction.
  • US officials allegedly obtained the papers which were written by military scientists and senior Chinese public health officials in 2015 as part of their own investigation into the origins of COVID-19.

Libyan Militias Briefly Take over Tripoli Govt. Headquarters

  • In a show of force, armed militiamen briefly took over a hotel in the Libyan capital of Tripoli that serves as headquarters for the interim government.
  • This development came after the three-member presidential council earlier this week appointed a new chief of the intelligence agency, Libya's version of the CIA. The militias, which control Tripoli, were apparently unhappy with the choice of Hussein Khalifa as the new spy chief.
  • Presidential council spokeswoman Najwa Wheba said no one was hurt in the takeover of Hotel Corinthia, in the heart of Tripoli. The hotel was mostly empty, the Muslim weekend.
  • The takeover underscored the tough road ahead for the interim government, which has been tasked with steering Libya through general elections due at the end of the year. The government has struggled to unite the conflict-stricken nation ahead of the vote.

UK's Labour Party Suffers Huge Losses in Local Polls

  • As counting of votes across Britain continued into this weekend, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's ruling Conservative Party was given plenty of reasons to celebrate while the local elections led to a string of crucial losses for the country's main opposition Labour Party.
  • The Conservatives won a parliamentary by-election in the north England constituency of Hartlepool, taking the seat from Labour for the first time since 1974 when the constituency was created, reports Xinhua news agency.
  • Adding pains to Keir Starmer's Labour Party, its losses in local elections continued to mount as vote results were announced one after another.

China Condemns G7 Criticism of Beijing's Presence in East, South China Seas

  • China has reacted sharply against a joint communique issued by foreign ministers of the Group of Seven (G7) countries that criticised Beijing's increasing presence in the East and South China Seas.
  • China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin strongly condemned the outcome of the G7 meeting in London.
  • In a joint statement representatives from the G7, which includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, had condemned Chinese actions in East and South China Seas.
  • Wang denounced the G7 nations in a news conference, saying their move is an interference in China's sovereignty and runs counter to the current trend of peaceful development and cooperation.

The World's Longest Pedestrian Bridge

  • The world's longest pedestrian suspension bridge named "Arouca" was opened in Portugal, according to a press release by UNESCO's Arouca World Geopark. The Arouca Bridge offers a half-kilometre (almost 1,700-foot) walk across its span, along a metal walkway suspended from cables. Some 175 meters (574 feet) below, the Paiva River flows through a waterfall.
  • The bridge hangs on steel cables strung between V-shaped concrete towers and connects the banks of the Paiva River. The record-breaking bridge took several years to build and was designed by Portuguese studio Itecons. It was constructed by Conduril and cost about $2.8 million (2.3 million euros).

Mohamed Nasheed: Maldives Ex-president Injured in Blast

  • The former President of the Maldives, Mohamed Nasheed, has been injured in a suspected bomb blast in the capital, Male.
  • Supporters from the governing Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) said that the blast happened as he was about to get into a car outside his home on Thursday.
  • Initial reports suggested an explosive device had been fastened to a motorbike that was parked nearby.
  • Mr. Nasheed was the first democratically elected president of the Maldives.
  • He won multi-party elections in 2008 but was ousted in a coup four years later.
  • Mr. Nasheed, 53, is currently serving as the speaker in parliament which is the Indian Ocean nation's second-most powerful position.

China Suspends Economic Dialogue with Australia

  • China "indefinitely" suspended all activity under a China-Australia Strategic Economic Dialogue, the latest setback for strained relations between the two countries.
  • "Recently, some Australian Commonwealth Government officials launched a series of measures to disrupt the normal exchanges and cooperation between China and Australia out of Cold War mindset and ideological discrimination," China's National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a short statement on the decision.
  • China's foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, said the suspension was a "necessary and legitimate" response to Australia "abusing" the concept of national security to pressure cooperation with China.

K. P. Sharma Oli's Govt. Loses Majority Support

  • Nepal's embattled Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli-led government lost majority support in the House of Representatives after the CPN (Maoist Center) led by Pushpakamal Dahal "Prachanda" officially withdrew support to it.
  • The party submitted a letter to this effect to the Parliament Secretariat, informing about its decision to withdraw support to the government, according to a senior leader of the party, Ganesh Shah.
  • After the withdrawal of support, the Oli government has lost its majority in the House of Representatives.
  • The decision of the Maoist party to withdraw support to the government comes two days after Oli announced that he will seek a vote of confidence in Parliament on May 10.
  • The Maoist Center has a total of 49 lawmakers in the Lower House.
  • Since the ruling CPN-UML has a total of 121 lawmakers, Prime Minister Oli is short of 15 lawmakers to save his government in the 275-member House.

Netanyahu Rival Lapid Asked to Form New Government

  • Israel's President has asked the leader of the centrist Yesh Atid Party, Yair Lapid, to try to form a government.
  • Reuven Rivlin announced that he had given Mr. Lapid the mandate after long-time Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu failed to meet an overnight deadline.
  • Yesh Atid came second to Mr. Netanyahu's right-ring Likud party in March's inconclusive general election.
  • Mr. Lapid faces a challenge to bridge the ideological differences between the parties he can ask to join a coalition.
  • If he fails to secure a majority in the 120-seat parliament, the Knesset, there is a risk of the country having to go to elections for the fifth time in two years.
