Wrestling, Under-17 World C'ships 2023: Led by Savita's gold, India ends campaign with 11 medals

India ended their 2023 World Cadet Wrestling Championships, meant for under-17 grapplers, with a total of 11 medals, including a gold, at Istanbul, Turkey.
Savita, who entered the event as the defending champion, won the only gold medal for India at Istanbul in the women's 61kg weight division.
The 17-year-old defeated Japan's Konami Ono 9-6 in the final to be crowned the world cadet champion.

Prannoy squanders 19-14 lead in decider as China's Weng Hong Yang clinches Australian Open Super ...

Perhaps, HS Prannoy reckoned he had done enough of the fighting back when he reached 19-14 in the decider after hammering down two successive power-smashes from the backcourt. He had shrugged off a 21-9 first-game concession, and forced a decider with a 23-21 score in the second in a physical humdinger. But the 5-point lead wasn't enough and a last dramatic twist was about to unfold, as Weng Hong Yang found a second wind, restored his nerves and won the battle of comebacks, showing more courage at the net in the Australian Open Super 500 final.
Scoring five straight points thereafter, the Chinese levelled at 19-19, and rode that momentum to bury Prannoy's Australia Open hopes in Sydney after the Indian was a point away from victory at 20-19.
Weng's biggest deception proved to be lulling Prannoy into believing he was too tired to win. The realisation must've hit Prannoy that he still had the last dregs and legs of a fight when the Chinese won a 71-shot rally to inch closer at 19-18. Ultimately, Prannoy sent a tired return wide as Weng, the world No. 24, won the 90-minute thriller 21-9, 21-23, 22-20 on his first Championship point.

Andy Flower Replaces Sanjay Bangar as Royal Challengers Bangalore's Head Coach

Former Zimbabwean skipper Andy Flower took over as the new head coach of Indian Premier League (IPL) outfit Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Flower succeeded Director of Cricket Operations Mike Hesson and head coach Sanjay Bangar.
Flower was involved in discussions with several IPL teams like Rajasthan Royals (RR) amongst others. However, he signed up with RCB.
Flower has previously coached the England national team and most served as a consultant to Australia in Ashes 2023. He has an extensive resume of being at the helm of T20 teams across the world.

Prarthana Bags Doubles Title at women's Tennis Hard-court Event 2023

Prarthana Thombare clinched the doubles title at the women's tennis hard-court event in Barcelona, Spain. The Asian Games bronze medallist, combined with Russian Anastasia Tikhonova, edged out France's Estelle Cascino and Latvia's Diana Marcinkevica 3-6, 6-1, 10-7 in the final. It is the second title of the year and 26th overall for Prarthana, who bagged bronze with Sania Mirza in 2014 at Incheon.

Indian Women Compound Archers Defeat Mexico to Win Country's First-ever Gold

The Indian women's compound team of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur clinched a gold medal in the World Archery Championships after beating Mexico in the final.
The Indian trio won 235-229 for India's first-ever gold in any category of the World Championships since its inception.
This was also India's fourth consecutive medal in the women's compound section at the Worlds, following their silver finishes in 2017 and 2021 and bronze in 2019. Jyothi has been a part of all four medal-winning teams.
India had beaten Colombia 220-216 in the semi-finals after a 228-226 win over Chinese Taipei in the quarter-finals.

World University Games: Jyothi Yarraji Breaks Record on Way to Bronze

Star athlete Jyothi Yarraji smashed her own 100 metres hurdles national record while winning a bronze medal at the World University Games.
Yarraji clocked 12.78 seconds and finished third in the women's 100m hurdles final, bettering her earlier national mark of 12.82 recorded in October 2022.
Viktoria Forster of Slovakia won gold by clocking 12.72, while Yanni Wu of China took silver with a time of 12.76.
India's Amlan Borgohain also won bronze in the men's 200m race with a season's best time of 20.55. He narrowly missed his own national record of 20.52. Tsebo Matsoso of South Africa won gold, while Japan's Yudai Nishi was second.

Aditi Swami becomes 1st Indian to win individual World Title at WAC 2023.
Indian archer, Aditi Swami has become the first-ever Indian to clinch the individual World Title at the World Archery Championships final 2023 in Berlin.
In the final, she defeated Andrea Becerra of Mexico, 149-147 in the summit clash of the compound women's event.
Conversely, India's Ojas Deotale also created history after defeating Lukasz Przybylski of Poland in a thrilling final to become the new world champion in Men's Individual compound event.

Star Indian Shuttler HS Prannoy Reaches the Final of the Australian Open

Prannoy will square off against China's Weng Hong Yang in the summit clash on Sunday.
Interestingly, Weng is the same opponent whom Prannoy had defeated in the final of the Malaysia Masters to win his first individual title in six years in May. It was also their only meeting so far in the international circuit.
It will be a second Super 500 final appearance of the season for the 31-year-old Prannoy, who rode on his power and precision to outwit the 21-year-old Rajawat 21-18 21-12 in the men's singles semifinals.

India's Martina Devi Wins Silver Medal in Women's over 81kg Youth Category

Star Indian shuttler HS Prannoy stormed into his second final of the season with a comprehensive straight-game win over young compatriot Priyanshu Rajawat at the Australian Open Super 500 badminton tournament here on Saturday. The 31-year-old Prannoy rode on his power and precision to outwit the 21-year-old Rajawat 21-18 21-12 in the men's singles semifinals.
"It is very satisfying (to win), because it is always tough to play continuously against the top 10 players and beating them and if against the top 10 players and beating them and if you look at the men's singles section, somebody from 30s and 40s are also very tough these days," Prannoy said after the win.
"Last two years have been good for me, I have been consistently able to pull off matches and this year has been special and I hope I can do something similar to what I did in Malaysia," he said.

Manoj Tiwary Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket

Former India batsman Manoj Tiwary announced his retirement from all forms of cricket, drawing curtains to a very unique career.
Tiwary, who played 12 ODIs and three T20Is between 2008 and 2015, ventured into politics even while he remained an active cricketer, and became a Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs in West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee's state cabinet.
Tiwary finished his First-Class career just 92 runs shy of the 10,000-landmark (9,908 runs) and averaged 48.56 with 29 centuries in a glittering 19-year career. He made his debut under Deep Dasgupta in 2004 against Delhi at the Eden Gardens.
He was also a member of the Kolkata Knight Riders' maiden IPL triumph in 2012 and struck the winning runs in the last over to seal a 191-run chase against the CSK.

South Zone Claim Deodhar Trophy

South Zone clinched the Deodhar Trophy title for the ninth time with a commanding 45-run win over East Zone in the final.
After opener Rohan Kunnummal smacked a sensational 75-ball 107 to set the ball rolling for his side, there was no stopping South, who piled up 328/8 batting first.
South's impressive bowling line-up then made life miserable for East's batters, who were bowled out for 283 in 46.1 overs.
The Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy or simply Deodhar Trophy (also known as Mastercard Deodhar Trophy due to sponsorship reasons), is a List A cricket domestic cricket tournament of India. It is named after D. B. Deodhar (known as the Grand Old Man of Indian cricket) and is a 50-over knockout competition played on an annual basis among the 3 national level teams - India A, India B and India C.
The competition was introduced in 1973-74 season as an inter-zonal tournament.

Canada's Alberta Cancels Bid for 2030 Commonwealth Games

The province of Alberta withdrew its support for a possible bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, ending the chance of bringing the multi-sport event back to Canada.
Minister of Tourism and Sport Joseph Schow said that hosting the Games, which typically attract more than 4,000 athletes from the 54 nations of the Commonwealth, was not in line with the interests of Alberta taxpayers.
"The corporate sponsorship model and limited broadcast revenues for the Commonwealth Games would have put 93 percent of those costs and risks on taxpayers.
