Vaishali Ramesh Babu Achieves FIDE Grandmaster Title

  • Indian Chess Prodigy, Vaishali Ramesh Babu was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE, the International Chess Federation said that India is booming as far as the Chess landscape is concerned.
  • While sharing her journey, Vaishali, said that it was due to her father's decision to keep her away from television that she got enrolled into a Chess academy. She added that her parents have been her big support system.
  • Vaishali is the third Indian female Grandmaster, joining Koneru Humpy and Harika Dronavalli. Vaishali completed the requisite 2500 ELO points at the Llobregat Open tournament in Spain, last year. However, the title was officially given to her only recently following the FIDE Council meeting during the Candidates Tournament in Toronto last month.

Amul Becomes Lead Sponsor for USA and South Africa in T20 World Cup 2024

  • The USA Cricket team will be making their T20 World Cup debut as co-hosts of the prestigious tournament, which commences on June 1. Part of the event, including the semifinals and finals, will take place in the Caribbean.
  • Amul's sponsorship of the USA team holds special significance as the dairy behemoth has a global footprint, and its products, including Amul milk, are now being sold in the United States.
  • Expressing his excitement, Jayen Mehta, Managing Director of Amul, stated, "The goodness of Amul Milk will empower the USA Cricket team to win hearts and laurels from across the world. We wish our best to the team for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2024."

West Indies Cricketer Devon Thomas Banned for 5 Years for Match Fixing

  • West Indies batter Devon Thomas was banned for five years by the International Cricket Council for match fixing.
  • The Dubai-based ICC said that Thomas admitted to breaching seven counts of the anti-corruption codes of Sri Lanka Cricket, the Emirates Cricket Board, and the Caribbean Premier League.
  • The breaches relate to attempting to fix the outcome of games and obstructing investigations by concealing, tampering with or destroying evidence.
  • Thomas' ban was backdated to May 23 last year (2023), the date when he was provisionally suspended. The final 18 months of the ban are suspended.

Kenyan Dominance at TCS World 10K Bengaluru

  • The 16th edition of the Tata Consultancy Services World 10K Bengaluru witnessed Kenyan runners Peter Mwaniki (28:15) and Lilian Kasait (30:56) emerging victorious in the international elite men's and women's categories, respectively.
  • Mwaniki pulled away from his compatriot Hillary Chepkwony (28:33) at the 7.5 km mark, displaying a burst of speed that left his fellow Kenyan trailing.
  • Mirroring Mwaniki's strategy, Kasait distanced herself from her closest rival, Emmaculate Achol (31:17), by surging ahead at the 7.1 km mark.
  • Despite their impressive performances, Mwaniki and Kasait were unable to break the event records (men: 27:38, women: 30:35) on the new route, which received praise from most runners.
  • In the Indian elite categories, Kiran Matre (29:32) etched his name in the record books by breaking the event record for Indian men's elite athletes, surpassing the previous milestone of 29:49 set by Suresh Kumar in 2015.

  • Spain, which will co-host the 2030 World Cup, last week announced the creation of a special committee to oversee RFEF until the governing body holds new elections. FIFA and UEFA were closely monitoring the situation with great concern.

India Announce Squad for Men's T20 World Cup 2024

  • Rohit Sharma will lead India's quest for the long-awaited glory as BCCI announced their squad for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 squad.
  • India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Hardik Pandya (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant (wk), Sanju Samson (wk), Shivam Dube, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Siraj.

  • India is placed in Group A of the tournament alongside arch-rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada and co-hosts USA. Their campaign begins on 5 June against Ireland at the newly-constructed Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York before they take on Pakistan in one of the most awaited matches of the upcoming T20 World Cup.

  • In Boxing, Brijesh Tamta, Sagar Jakhar and Sumit reached the semi-finals of the ASBC Asian Under 22 and Youth Boxing Championships 2024 in Astana, Kazakhstan, yesterday. With these victories, the Indian boxers have guaranteed a medal in the youth category.
  • In the Mens 48 kg quarter-final, Brijesh overcame a tough bout against Uzbekistan's Sabirov Sayfiddin, clinching victory with a 4-3 win, after the bout went to review. On the other hand, Sagar Jakhar and Sumit both registered a convincing 5-Nil victory in their respected categories. In Men's 60 kg category, Sagar defeated Thailand's Kalaseeram Thanaphansakon, while Sumit beat Hong Seo Jin of South Korea in Men's 67 kg quarter-final. However, another Indian boxer Jitesh, in 54 kg, lost Nil-5 to Kazakhstan's Tulebek Nurassyl.

Indian Athletes Shine at 21st U-20 Asian Athletics Championship 2024

  • The Indian athletes continued their impressive medal-winning spree at the 21st U-20 Asian Athletics Championship 2024, with Harshit Kumar clinching a gold medal in the highly competitive Hammer throw event. His outstanding throw of 66.7 meters secured India's latest gold at the prestigious event.
  • At the end of the third day of the championship, the Indian contingent had amassed a total of 18 medals, including five from the latest round of events. The haul consisted of one gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, further cementing India's position as a powerhouse in Asian athletics.
  • The 21st Asian U20 Athletics Championship, organised by the Asian Athletics Association in association with the UAE Athletics Federation in Dubai, serves as a qualifying event for the 2024 World U20 Athletics Championships. The global event is set to take place in Lima, Peru, from August 27 to 31, 2024.
  • With 60 Indian athletes, including 31 men and 29 women, participating in the championship, India has already secured an impressive 18 medals. This remarkable performance builds on the success of the previous edition in Yecheon, South Korea, where India finished third on the medal table behind Japan and China, with 19 medals.

Bismah Maroof Announces Retirement from International Cricket

  • Bismah Maroof, one of Pakistan's most high-profile women cricketers and former captain, has announced retirement from all international cricket.
  • Bismah, 32, was forced into a long break from cricket, first due to a fitness issue in 2020 and then after giving birth to a baby girl in August 2021.
  • Bismah had grabbed headlines when she took her baby to the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand. She was the first Pakistani woman cricketer to avail a 12-month maternity leave with pay policy.
  • A left-handed batter, Bismah made her ODI debut against India in 2006 and went on to represent Pakistan in 276 international matches, the most by any Pakistan women cricketer.
  • She had made her T20I debut against Ireland in 2009 She has scored 6,262 international runs, including 33 half-centuries, and has taken 80 international wickets with her right-arm leg-spin.

MS Dhoni Sets New IPL Record in CSK's Dominant Win

  • The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a resounding 78-run victory over the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Sunday, potentially shaping the trajectory of both teams' 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaigns. This emphatic win significantly boosted CSK's net run rate, propelling them to the third position in the league standings. Conversely, SRH suffered their second consecutive defeat, slipping to the fourth spot.
  • The match witnessed a remarkable milestone for the legendary MS Dhoni, as he became the first player to achieve 150 victories in the IPL. Dhoni's remarkable feat leaves his CSK teammate Ravindra Jadeja and former Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma tied for a distant second with 133 wins each.

Archery World Cup 2024 Stage 1

  • India men's archery team of Dhiraj Bommadevara, Tarundeep Rai and Pravin Jadhav created history by beating reigning Olympic champions South Korea and won a World Cup gold medal. The last time India won a gold in Archery World Cup was back in 2010.
  • India men's team showed great composure against the mighty Koreans and won the battle 5-1 (57-57, 57-55, 55-53) to secure the World Cup Stage 1 gold, in Shanghai, China.

Maheshwari Misses Skeet Gold But Seals Olympics Berth

  • Maheshwari Chauhan sealed India's 21st quota place in shooting for the Paris Olympics by winning the silver medal in the women's skeet event on the concluding day of the final Olympics qualification championship for shotgun in Doha.
  • Maheshwari, in her maiden ISSF final, lost 3-4 to Chile's Francisca Crovetto Chadid in a shoot-off for gold after both were tied at 54 hits in the 60-shot final. It is India's second Paris quota place in women's skeet.
