India begins AFC Asian Cup U-20 qualifiers with 4-1 win over Mongolia

  • India beat Mongolia 4-1 in the opening match of its AFC Under 20 Asian Cup qualifiers in Vientiane, Laos.
  • A brace from Manglenthang Kipgen and goals from Kelvin Singh and Korou Singh Thingujam gave India three points in Group G, which also has host Laos and Iran.
  • The AFC Asian Cup U-20 qualifiers will conclude on September 29.

Kamal Chawla Clinches Gold in World 6-Red Snooker

  • Indian veteran Kamal Chawla clinched his maiden IBSF World 6-Red title with a commanding 6-2 victory over Pakistan's Asjad Iqbal in the final of the IBSF World Men's 6-Red Snooker Championship in the capital city of Mongolia Ulaanbaatar. India also bagged three bronze medals through Malkeet Singh, Vidya Pillai and Keerthana Pandian.

Raphael Varane Announces Retirement

  • French defender Raphael Varane announced a shock retirement from football, only months after leaving Manchester United to join Como.
  • Varane left United at the end of 2023-24 season after his contract expired. He made the move to Como following their promotion to Serie A and signed an initial two-year deal with Cesc Fabregas' side.
  • Varane lifted the World Cup with France in 2018 before finishing runner-up in 2022, featuring in 93 games for the national side.

Jeevan and Vijay Win Maiden Title

  • Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Vijay Sundar Prashanth clinched their maiden ATP title together, winning the Hangzhou Open men's doubles event, while Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti finished runners-up at the Chengdu Open.
  • The unseeded Indian duo of Jeevan and Vijay scripted a remarkable comeback to defeat the unseeded German team of Constantin Frantzen and Hendrik Jebens 4-6 7-6(5) 10-7 in one hour and 49 minutes.
  • The 2024 Chengdu Open was a men's tennis tournament played on outdoor hard courts. It was the sixth edition of the Chengdu Open and part of the ATP Tour 250 series of the 2024 ATP Tour. It took place at the Sichuan International Tennis Centre in Chengdu, China, from 18 to 24 September, 2024.

In its First-ever Appearance, India Bags Bronze Medal in Asia Pacific Padel Cup

  • In its first-ever tournament appearance, also the first-ever competition of its kind in the Asia Pacific region, India's padel team finished third in the Asia Pacific Padel Cup in Bali, Indonesia.
  • Having lost the opportunity to make it to the final, India managed to defeat Malaysia 3-0 in the bronze medal match.
  • The tournament was won by Indonesia who beat Philippines in a thrilling gold medal match by 2-3. While Philippines had won against Indonesia in the group stage 1-4, the latter turned the tables in the final.
  • The other teams which participated in the tournament were China and Singapore.

Kalikesh Singh Deo New President of National Rifle Association of India

  • Kalikesh Narayan Singh Deo was elected president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) after he beat his rival V. K. Dhall 36-21 in the polls held at the Constitution Club of India in Delhi. Kalikesh, a former MP from Odisha, was taking care of the day-to-day functioning of the NRAI after the position fell vacant last year (2023) following the resignation of Raninder Singh as per the government's National Sports Code (NSC).

Odisha Swimmer Pratyasa Ray to Get Ekalabya Puraskar

  • Emerging swimmer Pratyasa Ray has been selected for the 32nd Ekalabya Puraskar for 2024 for her achievements in swimming. A proud moment for Odisha's sporting fraternity.
  • Pratyasa Ray, a promising talent in the field of swimming with a remarkable track record, has been selected for this year's award in recognition of her exceptional performances. 
  • Born in Bargarh district of Odisha, Pratyasa will receive a cash prize of Rs 7 lakh, an increase from the previous Rs 5 lakh along with a citation at a ceremony.
  • Ekalabya Puraskar was instituted by charitable body IMPaCT (Indian Metals Public Charitable Trust (IMPaCT) in 1993 and managed by IMFA, the leading ferro alloys producer in the country. It is now considered the most prestigious sports award in Odisha.
  • The award is given every year to young sportspersons of Odisha in recognition of their outstanding performance in the preceding two years.

India A Wins Final Contest and Lifts Duleep Trophy

  • Tanush Kotian (3/47) and Prasidh Krishna (3/50) shared six wickets and trumped Sai Sudharsan's valiant 111 as India A defeated India C by 132 runs and won the Duleep Trophy.
  • Having entered the final round with six points in two matches and three points behind India C, the 'A' team showed incredible resolve from the word go and dominated the final contest of the four-day competition.
  • The victory took India A to the top of the points table with a total of 12 points from three matches, crowing them as the eventual winners. Chasing 350 on the final day, India C were all out for 217 in 81.5 overs.
  • Arshdeep Singh saved his best for the last game and returned career-best figures of 6/40 as India D thrashed India B by 257 runs to end their campaign with a consolation victory.

  • The 14th Hockey India Junior Men National Championship 2024 concluded with an exhilarating finale at the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium in Jalandhar, Punjab. This prestigious event, organised by Hockey India, showcased the nation's top young talent in a fierce competition that spanned from September 9 to September 19, 2024.
  • The championship culminated in a nail-biting final match between Hockey Punjab and Uttar Pradesh Hockey. The intensity of the game was evident as both teams fought tooth and nail, resulting in a 3-3 tie at the end of regular time. The deadlock led to a dramatic penalty shootout to determine the champion.

Sangram Singh Becomes 1st Indian Male Wrestler to Win MMA Fight

  • Indian wrestler Sangram Singh made his mark in the MMA world by winning his debut fight at the Gama International Fighting Championship.
  • Sangram, who is a Commonwealth Heavyweight wrestling champion, won in a mere minute and thirty seconds against Pakistani fighter Ali Raza Nasir, who is seventeen years younger than him, and became the first Indian male wrestler to win the mixed martial arts fight.
  • Among the eleven competing nations, Sangram's accomplishment represents the fastest win ever registered by an Indian fighter in the 93 kg division.

Chess Olympiad: Double Delight for India as It Clinches Gold Medals in Open and Women's Events

  • The Indian contingent brought home the laurels with their maiden Open event gold medal wins in men's and women's competitions at the 45th Chess Olympiad in Hungary, Budapest.
