Turkey's Zeynep Sonmez Clinches Maiden WTA Title in Merida

  • Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey roared past American Ann Li 6-2, 6-1 and captured the first WTA title of her career in Merida, Mexico. Sonmez became the first Turkish player to lift a WTA trophy since Cagla Buyukakcay won in Istanbul in 2016 and became the first champion from the country.

Paris Masters: Alexander Zverev Win Title

  • Germany's Alexander Zverev won the Paris Masters by defeating home hope Ugo Humbert 6-2, 6-2 in a dominant display by the new world number two.
  • Zverev now boasts seven ATP 1000-level titles over the course of his career, following two wins in Rome and Madrid, as well as victories in Montreal and Cincinnati.

Sumathi Dharmawardena is New ICC Anti-Corruption Unit Chair

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) appointed Sri Lankan legal expert Sumathi Dharmawardena as the new independent chair for its Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU). Dharmawardena took over from Sir Ronnie Flanagan, who served in the role for 14 years, and joined with a strong background in sports corruption investigations and legal representation, including roles with Interpol and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
  • Dharmawardena has a distinguished career as the Additional Solicitor General at Sri Lanka's Attorney General's Department, representing the government in various sports-related legal matters. His involvement with Interpol and UNODC has further strengthened his expertise in overseeing high-profile investigations and prosecutions under the Prevention of Offences relating to the Sports Act, making him well-equipped to tackle sports corruption. 

Ravindra Jadeja Climbs to 5th Spot in India's Test Wicket List

  • Ravindra Jadeja achieved a significant milestone by becoming the fifth-highest wicket-taker for India in Test cricket. This feat was accomplished on the first day of the third Test match against New Zealand in Mumbai, where Jadeja surpassed Ishant Sharma's wicket tally.
  • Ishant had previously held this spot with 311 wickets from 188 innings.
  • Jadeja now stands among India's legendary bowlers, with only the following four players ahead of him: Anil Kumble, Ravichandran Ashwin, Kapil Dev and Harbhajan Singh.
  • Jadeja's position as the fifth-highest wicket-taker is notable given his role as an all-rounder, proving his value not just with the bat but also as a frontline bowler.

Mia Blichfeldt Wins Women's Hylo Open Badminton 2024

  • India's Malvika Bansod lost the women's singles final at the Hylo Open 2024 badminton tournament in Saarbrucken, Germany.
  • Seeded sixth at the BWF Super 300 tournament, Malvika Bansod lost to Denmark's Mia Blichfeldt, the seventh seed, by a 21-10, 21-15 scoreline.
  • Malvika Bansod had beaten another Danish woman, Julie Dawall Jakobsen, and became only the third Indian woman after Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu to reach the final of a BWF World Tour tournament abroad.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen Wins Brazilian Grand Prix

  • Red Bull driver Max Verstappen took a major step toward securing his fourth straight F1 title by winning the Brazilian Grand Prix, despite starting 17th, and increasing his lead over McLaren's Lando Norris with three more races remaining.
  • Verstappen overcame punishments before the race as well as the wet weather at Interlagos to earn his first victory since June, and his eighth Grand Prix win of the year. He also clocked the fastest lap of the race, which gives him an extra point.

Pro Kabaddi League Wins 'Best Sports League' at CII Awards

  • The Pro Kabaddi League (PKL) received the prestigious 'Best Sports League of the Year' award at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Sports Business Awards 2024. The award ceremony, part of the CII Score Card 2024 event, took place in New Delhi.
  • The CII Sports Business Awards acknowledge innovation and excellence in the sports business sector.
  • In addition, defending champion Puneri Paltan was honoured with the 'Sports Franchise of the Year' award. The franchise's grassroots initiative, Yuva Paltan, has been instrumental in developing young kabaddi stars like Aslam Inamdar and Mohit Goyat, who have become key players for the team and represented India on the international stage.

Ballon d'Or 2024 Awards

  • Spain and Manchester City midfielder Rodri won the 2024 Ballon d'Or award in the male category during the ceremony at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.
  • Rodri who was a leading figure in Manchester City's English Premier League title triumph also played a pivotal role in Spain's European Championship triumph. 
  • Aitana Bonmati won the women's Ballon d'Or after having led Barcelona Femeni to a treble winning season and having won the Women's World Cup with Spain.

Australia's Matthew Wade Retires from International Cricket

  • Australian wicketkeeper-batter Matthew Wade announced his retirement from international cricket and a move into coaching.
  • Wade, who played in all three formats of the game for Australia across 13 years and 225 internationals made his last appearance during the T20 World Cup in the West Indies in June this year (2024).
  • Wade's best moment in Australia colours came during the team's victorious march to their maiden T20 World Cup title in 2021 in Dubai. The southpaw's unbeaten 41 powered Australia past Pakistan in a tense semi-final game. Wade smacked Pakistan seamer Shaheen Shah Afridi for three consecutive sixes to seal the win. Wade's finishing skills were not required in the final as Australia thrashed New Zealand by eight wickets in Dubai to win the title for the first time.

VVS Laxman Team India's Head Coach for South Africa T20Is

  • Former batting veteran and NCA boss VVS Laxman was appointed Team India's head coach for the four-match T20I series against South Africa starting November 4. With regular coach Gautam Gambhir flying with the Test squad to Australia for the marquee five-match series beginning in Perth on November 22, Laxman filled in for him the way he did for ex-coach Rahul Dravid several times during his tenure.
