The United States space agency NASA said that the country plans to test a spacecraft engine powered with nuclear fission by 2027, an advancement seen as key to long-haul missions including a manned journey to Mars. NASA will partner with the US military's Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop the nuclear thermal propulsion engine and launch it into space.
The project has been named the Demonstration Rocket for Agile Cislunar Operations or DRACO.
With the help of this new technology, astronauts could journey to and from deep space faster than ever, a major capability to prepare for crewed missions to Mars. Use of a nuclear thermal rocket allows for faster transit time, reducing risk for astronauts.

Canada to Commercialise World's First Photonic-based quaNtum Computer
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a new federal investment to build and commercialise the world's first photonic-based, fault-tolerant quantum computer.
As per reports, the investment of 40 million Canadian dollars ($32 million) will enable Xanadu Quantum Technologies Inc., a Toronto-based Canadian quantum computing company, to develop the quantum computer which will have the potential to provide world leading capabilities to help solve complex data problems and could be used in a variety of sectors such as finance, transportation, environmental modelling, and health.

JUICE Space Mission of Europe
The European Union is to launch the JUICE Spacecraft in April 2023. The spacecraft is to explore the moons of Jupiter. Specifically, the mission is to study the three major moons of Jupiter namely Ganymede, Europe, and Callisto. Out of the 80 moons of the planet, these three were selected for their large oceans. The satellite is to be launched from French Guiana. Ariane 5 will carry the satellite. JUICE is the first satellite from the earth to enter the orbit of Ganymede.
UICE stands for Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer. The satellite was developed by Germany and tested by France.
The main objective of the mission is to study the microbial life on the icy moons of the planet.
It will also study the polar regions and the magnetosphere of the planet.

Eighth India International Science Festival in Bhopal
The 8th India International Science Festival-2022 (IISF) was held January 21 to 24 at the Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT) in Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh.
It was inaugurated by Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in the presence of Union Minister for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and the state's science and technology minister Om Prakash Saklecha.
The theme of the event, organised by the Union Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Earth Sciences, Department of Atomic Energy, Department of Space and MP government in association with Vijnana Bharati (VIBHA), was 'Marching towards Amrit Kaal with Science, Technology and Innovation'.
As part of the event, 'Vigyanika-Science Literature Festival' was organised on January 22-23 by CSIR-National Institute of Science Communication and Policy Research (CSIR-NIScPR) along with the department of biotechnology and VIBHA.

IIT Madras Develops BharOS - India's Indigenious Mobile Operating System
An IIT Madras-incubated firm has developed an Indigenous Mobile Operating System that can benefit India's 100 crore mobile phone users. Called 'BharOS,' this software can be installed on commercial off-the-shelf handsets. It provides a secure environment for users and is a significant contribution towards 'Atmanirbhar Bharat.'
BharOS Services are currently being provided to organisations that have stringent privacy and security requirements whose users handle sensitive information that requires confidential communications on restricted apps on mobiles. Such users require access to private cloud services through private 5G networks.
BharOS comes with No Default Apps (NDA). This means that users are not forced to use apps that they may not be familiar with or that they may not trust. Additionally, this approach allows users to have more control over the permissions that apps have on their device.
