India's Chief Economic Advisor Calls Out Rich Nations' Climate Hypocrisy

  • India's Chief Economic Advisor V. Anantha Nageswaran criticised developed countries for their 'double standards' on climate action, highlighting the G7's commitment to ending the use of unabated coal power plants only in the first half of the 2030s, despite their high carbon emissions.
  • In the annual economic survey, Nageswaran said it is morally wrong to ask developing countries to abandon their aspirations for better living standards to allow developed countries to maintain their lifestyles in cleaner environments and cooler climates.
  • He argued that economic growth would empower developing countries to better address climate change.
  • Nageswaran said that the UN convention on climate change and its Paris Agreement mandate that developed countries provide resources and take the lead in mobilising finance to tackle the global problem.

Scientists Discover New Plant Species in Arunachal Pradesh

  • Researchers from the Botanical Survey of India (BSI) discovered a new plant species from a wildlife sanctuary in Arunachal Pradesh.
  • 'Phlogacanthus Sudhansusekharii', the plant species discovered from Itanagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Papum Pare district, belongs to the family 'Acanthaceae' and the 'Phlogacanthus' genus.
  • The species is named to honour Dr. Sudhansu Sekhar Dash, a scientist at the BSI, for his significant contribution to plant and ecological research in the Indian Himalayan region.

New Flower Fly Species Discovered in Kerala

  • Researchers of the Shadpada Entomology Research Lab (SERL) of Christ College, Irinjalakuda, reported two species of flower flies for the first time from Kerala.
  • 'Mesembrius bengalensis' and 'M. Quadrivittatus' were discovered from the Kole wetlands and Vilagan Kunnu hillocks of Thrissur district, Kerala.

ADB Approves $240.5 Mn Loan for Rooftop Solar Systems in India

  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a loan of USD 240.5 million to finance rooftop solar systems in India, aiding the government's efforts to expand energy access through renewable energy. The ADB announced that this financing will support tranches 2 and 3 of the Multitranche Financing Facility (MFF) Solar Rooftop Investment Program, initially approved by ADB in 2016. In 2023, the program was restructured to focus specifically on deploying residential solar rooftop systems.
  • The approved financing will be allocated to the State Bank of India (SBI) and the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). These institutions will provide loans to developers and end-users throughout India for the installation of rooftop solar systems.

Indore Creates Record by Planting 51 Lakh Trees

  • The Madhya Pradesh government set a new Guinness World Record for planting the maximum number of trees in one day.
  • At an event in the state's Indore district, more than 11 lakh saplings were planted, following which state Chief Minister Mohan Yadav received a certificate from the Guinness Book of Records team.
  • Addressing the media after the event, Yadav stated that Indore, already the cleanest city in India and the economic capital of Madhya Pradesh, has now achieved the world record of planting more than 11 lakh saplings in a single day.

Philippines Chosen to Host Climate 'Loss and Damage' Fund Board

  • The Philippines was chosen to host the board of the "Loss and Damage" fund created by U.N. talks, marking another step towards providing financial help for countries to recover and rebuild from the impact of global warming.
  • Last month (June 2023), the World Bank's board approved a plan for the bank to act as interim host of the fund for four years.
  • Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr announced his country's election from a pool of seven contenders.
