Sri Lanka President Dissanayake Picks Harini Amarasuriya as PM

Harini Amarasuriya was officially sworn in as Sri Lanka's new Prime Minister.
Amarasuriya, known for her work as a rights activist and university lecturer, has made significant contributions to social justice and education in Sri Lanka.
She is the first female Prime Minister since Sirimavo Bandaranaike took office in 1994 and the third woman to serve in this capacity in Sri Lanka's history.
In her new role, Amarasuriya has been assigned several crucial portfolios that include Justice, Education, Labour, Industries, Science and Technology, Health, and Investment.

New Global Climate 'Loss and Damage' Fund Names First Director

The Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage, aimed at assisting countries ravaged by climate-driven disasters, appointed Ibrahima Cheikh Diong, a Senegalese finance specialist and dual U.S. citizen, as its first Director.
The fund, created in 2022 under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), is administered by the World Bank and represents a significant win for developing nations who have long pushed for support against climate disasters. Wealthy nations had resisted this fund, fearing it would lead to compensation demands for their greenhouse gas emissions.
With Diong's appointment and the Philippines selected as the fund's headquarters, the $800 million pledged at COP28 in Dubai in 2023 can now be distributed. This progress is seen as critical ahead of the upcoming COP29 summit in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, where further financial contributions will be sought from countries.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi Attends the Sixth Quad Leaders' Summit in Wilmington, Delaware

Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in the sixth Quad Leaders' Summit in Wilmington, Delaware, hosted by the President of the United States of America, Biden, Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese and Prime Minister of Japan Fumio Kishida also participated.
Modi thanked President Biden for hosting the Summit and for his personal commitment to strengthen the Quad as a force for global good.
He also stated that at a time when the world is ridden with tensions and conflicts, the coming together of Quad partners, with shared democratic ethos and values, is important for humanity.
The Leaders welcomed the next hosting of the Quad Leaders' Summit by India in 2025.

Macron Unveils New Right-wing French Government

French President Emmanuel Macron unveiled his new government almost three months after a snap general election delivered a hung parliament.
The long-awaited new line up, led by Prime Minister Michel Barnier, marks a decisive shift to the right, even though a left-wing alliance won most parliamentary seats.
Despite the partnership between Macron's centrist party and those on the right, parliament remains fractured and will rely on the support of other parties to pass legislation.
It comes as the European Union puts France on notice over its spiralling debt, which now far exceeds EU rules.
Among those gaining a position in the new cabinet is Bruno Retailleau, a key member of the conservative Republicans Party founded by former President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Sri Lanka's New President Anura Kumara Dissanayake

Left-leaning politician Anura Kumara Dissanayake was elected as Sri Lanka's next President after he won the debt-ridden country's first election since its economy collapsed in 2022.
He beat off his nearest rival, opposition leader Sajith Premadasa, and emerged as the clear winner after a historic second round of counting, which included second-preference votes. Outgoing President Ranil Wikremesinghe trailed in third.

Jordan Becomes First Country to Receive WHO Verification for Eliminating Leprosy

The World Health Organization (WHO) officially recognised Jordan as the first country globally to eliminate leprosy, marking a significant milestone in public health. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised this achievement, emphasising the collective efforts to stop transmission and reduce the stigma associated with leprosy. Saima Wazed, WHO Regional Director for South-East Asia, highlighted that Jordan's success is not only a victory over the disease but also against the associated psychological and socio-economic harms.
Jordan has not reported any indigenous cases of leprosy for over 20 years, a testament to the nation's strong political commitment and effective public health strategies. An independent verification team, commissioned by WHO, confirmed this status after a thorough assessment, validating Jordan's elimination of the disease.
