Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, delivered India's statement during the Ministerial Dialogue on Drought Resilience, at CoP16 of UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Minister described the extraordinary journey of India in combating land degradation and desertification, which are aligned with the overall objectives of the UNCCD. He said, "Our journey represents a transformative narration of commitment, innovation and sustainable development. From global recognition of land degradation as a critical environmental challenge at CoP 5, to emphasizing community driven land restoration at CoP 10, and thereafter the recognition of land restoration as a critical climate change strategy at CoP 14, to the global commitment to restore degraded lands at CoP 15, we have all been equal partners in this journey."

Trump Names Billionaire Warren Stephens as US Envoy to UK

US President-elect Donald Trump appointed billionaire investment banker Warren Stephens as the next United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, a prestigious role often reserved for close allies and major donors.
Stephens, a prominent Republican donor, contributed $2 million to a pro-Trump super PAC during the 2024 campaign. He is the chairman, president, and CEO of Stephens Inc., a financial services firm based in Little Rock, Arkansas, which he inherited from his father.

Indian-Origin Kash Patel Announced Next Director of FBI

US President-elect Donald Trump announced Kash Patel as the next Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), succeeding Christopher Wray. Patel, a long-time Trump loyalist known for his confrontational stance against the "deep state" and criticism of federal agencies, brings a history of staunch support for Trump's policies.
Patel in 2018 served as an aide to Representative Devin Nunes who headed the House Intelligence Committee at the time.

Nepal Hosts Plast Nepal 2024 and GeoMandu 2024

Kathmandu witnessed two significant international events, underscoring the country's growing focus on economic development and sustainability. The fourth edition of Plast Nepal 2024 and the second edition of GeoMandu 2024 brought together professionals, businesses, and policymakers to explore advancements in their respective fields.
The three-day Plast Nepal 2024 exhibition, held at Bhrikutimandap and organised under India's Plastic Export Promotion Council, showcased 45 stalls from Indian companies alongside more than 150 participants from five countries. The event aimed to foster business-to-business connections in the plastic sector across South Asia.
the second edition of GeoMandu 2024, organised by the Nepal Geotechnical Society, brought together geotechnical engineers, geoscientists, researchers, and professionals from across the globe. The two-day international conference focused on 'Geotechniques for Sustainable Infrastructure,' and addressed the urgent need for resilient, environmentally conscious infrastructure in the face of climate change.

WHO Chief Congratulates Okonjo on Reappointment as WTO Director General

The Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, congratulated Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her reappointment as the Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) for a second term.
The reappointment process was overseen by Ambassador Petter Olberg of Norway, Chair of the General Council.
According to the WTO, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala first assumed office as Director-General on March 1, 2021, becoming the first woman and first African to lead the WTO.

Roche CEO Thomas Schinecker to Lead IFPMA as New President

The International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) appointed Thomas Schinecker, CEO of Roche, as its new President. Schinecker, who served as IFPMA Vice-President for two years, will be joined by Rob Davis, CEO of MSD, as the Vice-President. The leadership transition follows the completion of Albert Bourla's term as President.
Schinecker's appointment marks a significant shift in IFPMA's leadership. As President Albert Bourla emphasised the organization's role in driving innovative medicines and vaccines. Schinecker, in his new role, aims to propel the industry forward with bold policies and pioneering innovations.

UN Alliance of Civilizations 10th Global Forum

The 10th Global Forum of the United Nation Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in Cascais, Portugal convened members of the UNAOC Group of Friends, political leaders, representatives of international and regional organizations, religious leaders and faith actors, the private sector, civil society, academia, youth, arts and media, as well as donor agencies and foundations, who addressed the global issues pertinent to peace and security and called for restoring trust and for uniting in peace. In Cascais, participants had an opportunity to reflect on the twenty years of the 'Alliance of Civilizations' initiative, announced by Spain at the 59th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2004, and how UNAOC grew into a vibrant and well-established United Nations entity.
The UNAOC was established in 2005, with Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, proposing it, along with then-Spanish Prime Minister, Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero.
It was later adopted as a UN initiative by the UN Secretary-General.
The UNAOC was founded in response to mutual suspicion, fear and polarisation between Muslim countries and Western societies, with the understanding that only a broad coalition could prevent the situation from deteriorating further, which had begun to threaten international stability.

India Reaffirms its Commitment to Inclusive Growth and Intellectual Property Protection

After nearly two decades of negotiations, the member states of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) adopted the landmark Design Law Treaty (DLT). By signing the Final Act of the Riyadh Design Law Treaty, India builds on its progress and reaffirms its commitment to fostering inclusive growth and ensuring equitable access to intellectual property protection.
The treaty seeks to harmonize the procedural frameworks for industrial design protection, improving the efficiency and accessibility of registration processes across multiple jurisdictions. By standardizing procedural requirements, the DLT reduces administrative burdens, thereby promoting global creativity in design. Its goal is to ensure that the benefits of streamlined design protection are accessible to all stakeholders, with particular emphasis on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), startups, and independent designers.
