Akhil Sheoran Secures Paris 2024 Olympics Quota, Wins Bronze in ISSF World Championships

Akhil Sheoran missed the silver by 0.1 point but clinched the bronze and the Olympic quota in the 50-metre rifle 3-position event, in the World Championship in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Akhil Sheoran along with Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar and Niraj Kumar won the team gold, one point ahead of Austria.
The Indian trio of Rhythm Sangwan, Esha Singh and Manu Bhaker, landed the team gold in 25-metre sports pistol.

AFI Chief Adille Sumariwalla Elected to World Athletics Executive Board

Adille Sumariwalla was elected as one of the four vice presidents of World Athletics, the highest post ever held by an Indian in the global track and field governing body. Sumariwalla, who is the president of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), received the third-highest number of votes cast during the WA elections in Budapest, Hungary. He will serve a four-year term.
In his new role as vice president, Sumariwalla will be responsible for helping to shape the future of athletics at the global level. He will also be involved in decision-making on a range of issues, including the development of the sport, anti-doping, and the World Championships. The other three vice presidents elected were Ximena Restrepo (Colombia), Raul Chapado (Spain), and Jackson Tuwei (Kenya).
Sumariwalla is a former Olympian who competed in the 100 meters at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow. He has been president of the AFI since 2012 and has been a member of the WA Council since 2015.

FIFA Women's World Cup 2023: Spain Wins the Title with 1-0 Victory over England

Spain secured its first ever Women's World Cup title with a 1-0 win over England at the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup final in Sydney. The win marked a historic FIFA Women's World Cup campaign for Spain who previously failed to make it past the Round of 16. Making it to the final after knockout wins over Switzerland, the Netherlands and Sweden, was already a first for Spain with the victory in the final cause for an even bigger celebration.
Spain's first major international trophy made it the first European team to win the Women's World Cup since Germany in 2007.In addition, Spain's victory makes it only the second nation to have won both the men's and the women's World Cups. The other nation is Germany, who won the men's World Cup in 1974 and 1990, and the women's World Cup in 2003 and 2007.

U20 Wrestling World Championships: Antim Creates History by Defending 53 kg Title

Antim Panghal created history by becoming the first Indian woman wrestler to win back-to-back U20 world titles as she defended her 53 kg crown, combining her tremendous agility and strength for a stupendous feat.
Antim, who hails from Hisar, dominated her Ukrainian rival Mariia Yefremova in her facile 4-0 win. She fought with such authority that she conceded only two points in the entire tournament.

Sprinter, Asian Games Medallist Dutee Chand Faces Four-year Ban for Doping

India sprinter Dutee Chand has been banned for four years after failing two out-of-competition dope tests.
She was tested for selective androgen receptor modulators (SARMs) in December 2022. Her ban period is effective from January 3, 2023. This means she will be out of action till January 3, 2027.
The ban would also mean that she has to forfeit her medals, points and prizes from the date her sample was collected, which was December 5, 2022.
"All the competitive results obtained by the athlete from the date of her sample collection shall stand disqualified," the Anti Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP) chairperson, Chaitanya Mahajan, said in its order.

Chess World Cup: Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa Beats Arjun Erigaisi to Book Semis Berth

Indian Grandmaster R. Praggnanandhaa defeated compatriot Arjun Erigaisi 5-4 via the sudden death tie-break to enter the semi-finals of the FIDE World Cup chess tournament.
With the win, Praggnanandhaa booked a place in the semi-finals against American ace Fabiano Caruana and almost secured a spot in next year's Candidates event. The teenaged chess star from Chennai, by virtually securing a place in the Candidates tournament, would be the only other Indian other than five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand to feature in the Candidates.

Lucknow Super Giants Appoints former chairman of selectors MSK Prasad as strategic consultant

IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants announced the appointment of former India wicketkeeper MSK Prasad as their strategic consultant. The former BCCI Chairman of the Selection Committee will be instrumental in providing essential guidance across a spectrum of critical domains.
MSK Prasad will help the franchise as Head of Talent Search and talent development. Lucknow Super Giants' latest appointment came after the newbie franchise roped in Justin Langer as their head coach, replacing Andy Flower who went on to join Royal Challengers Bangalore in the lead-up to IPL 2024.
MSK Prasad served as India men's cricket team's chief selector and he was at the helm when India scripted the historic Test series wins in Australia in 2018-19 and 2020-21.

TN Govt. Launches India's First-ever Night Street Racing Circuit in Chennai

The Tamil Nadu government and Racing Promotions Private Limited (RRPL) launched a new street circuit in Chennai. The 3.5 km track will be located around the Island Grounds and will be the first-ever street circuit in India and South Asia to host a night race.
The track will have elevation changes and 19 corners, including multiple chicanes. It will also offer stunning views of the Marina Beach Road and the Bay of Bengal.
The event is scheduled to be held on December 9-10 and will feature the F4 Indian Championship and the Indian Racing League. The SDAT will be investing Rs. 42 crore to host the event.
The launch of the new street circuit is a major boost for motorsport in India. It will help to raise the profile of the sport and attract more fans and sponsors. It is also expected to boost tourism in Chennai.
The event is expected to be a major success and will be a landmark moment for motorsport in India.

Priya Malik Wins Gold Medal at 2023 U20 World Wrestling Championships in Jordan

Indian grappler Priya Malik won Gold medal at the 2023 U20 World Wrestling Championships in Jordan. Priya became just the second woman wrestler from India to be crowned U20 world championship. Antim Panghal is the first woman from India to win a junior world title in wrestling at last year's (2022) edition. Priya Mallik beat Laura Celine Kuehn of Germany by 5-0 in the women's 76kg freestyle wrestling final. In a true stamp of authority, Priya went the whole tournament without conceding a single point in any of her matches. Priya has now won both the U17 2021, and 2022 and U20 world titles in her short but promising career.

Indian Men Bag 10m Air Pistol Team Bronze at ISSF World Championship

The Indian squad warmed up with the men's air pistol team bronze medal in the World Championship shooting in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Shiva Narwal, Sarabjot Singh and Arjun Singh Cheema were far from making the individual final of top-8 but together got the medal behind China and Germany.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) revealed the latest set of international stars to be named ICC Players of the Month for July 2023. Australia's spin bowling all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner and England's seamer Chris Woakes were honoured as the International Cricket Council (ICC) Players of the Month for July 2023.
Australia's prolific all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner becomes the first player to win back-to-back awards, claiming her fourth ICC Women's Player of the Month prize following another scintillating set of performances against England and Ireland in July.
England seamer Chris Woakes wins the ICC Men's Player of the Month award for his fruitful contributions with the ball, helping his side claw back a two-nil deficit to close out their Ashes series on level terms.
The ICC Player of the Month awards are voted for by a panel of experts, including former cricketers, journalists and broadcasters. The awards are designed to recognise the best performances by international cricketers across all three formats of the game.

England reached their first Women's World Cup final after beating Australia 3-1.
After falling at the semi-final stage in the previous two World Cups, England will face Spain looking to add a world title to last year's European Championship triumph.

Mohit Kumar became the first Indian wrestler to win junior world champion since 2019 after edging past Russia's Eldar Akhmaduninov in the 61kg final, while Priya lined herself up to be country's only second woman grappler to grab the title.

Neymar Quits PSG to Sign for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal

Brazil forward Neymar signed for Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), the clubs announced, joining Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Neymar scored 118 goals in 173 matches for PSG in six injury-plagued seasons. He won five Ligue 1 titles and three French Cups, but was on the losing side as PSG were beaten by Bayern Munich in the 2020 Champions League final.
Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona in 2017 for a world record fee of 222 million euros ($242 million), a few weeks before they recruited Kylian Mbappe.
Al Hilal Saudi Club, simply known as Al Hilal, is a professional multi-sports club based in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Their football team competes in the Saudi Professional League. They are the most decorated club in Asia winning 66 official trophies. They also hold the record for the most continental trophies in Asia, as well as a record 18 Professional League titles.
Al Hilal was founded on October 16, 1957, by a group of young men who wanted to create a football club that would represent the city of Riyadh. The club's first president was Mohammed Al-Helwa, and the first captain was Mohammed Al-Amri.
