Uttar Pradesh's Puja Tomar Becomes First Indian to Win a UFC Fight, Beats Brazil's Rayanne

  • In a historic moment for Indian sports, Puja Tomar - a UFC fighter, clinched her maiden win in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, becoming the first Indian, male or female, to do so. Facing Brazil's Rayanne dos Santos in the women's strawweight division at UFC Louisville 2024, Puja beat her opponent by split decision with scores of 30-27, 27-30, and 29-28.

Gulveer Singh Clinches Silver Medal at Portland Track Festival High Performance Meet

  • India's Gulveer Singh clinched the silver medal in the men's 5000-metre race at the Portland Track Festival High-Performance Meet in Portland, US.
  • The Asian Games bronze medallist also became the fastest Indian in the men's 5000-metre race.
  • Gulveer clocked the national record timing of 13 minutes 18.92 seconds and surpassed the previous record of 13 minutes 19.30 seconds, set by Avinash Sable in 2023.
  • With this achievement, Gulveer now holds the national records in both the 10,000-metre and 5,000-metre races.
  • Dylan Jacobs of USA bagged the gold.

Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur Athlete Wins Two Gold Medals in World Para Athlete Grand Prix

  • Saurabh Sharma, an athlete from Himachal Pradesh's Hamirpur district, won two gold medals at the World Para Athlete Grand Prix in the Nottwil city of Switzerland. Sharma emerged victorious in 155 metre and 5000 metre races.
  • Sharma, represented the Indian team in the T12 category. He had earlier won seven gold medals at the national level.

Iga Swiatek Wins Women's Singles Final at French Open

  • Iga Swiatek beat Jasmine Paolini in the women's singles final at French Open and won her third straight and fourth overall title at Roland Garros, Paris.
  • Swiatek is only the second player to claim tournament victory at Madrid, Rome and Roland Garros in a calendar year after Serena Williams (2013).
  • Swiatek is the first player in 10 years to complete a hattrick of titles at a single Grand Slam event. The last woman who achieved this was Serena Williams when the American won three straight US Open titles from 2012 to 2014.

French Open: Carlos Alcaraz Wins His Third Slam

  • Carlos Alcaraz won his maiden French Open title after beating Alexander Zverev in a thrilling 5-setter at Philippe-Chatrier. He became the seventh Spaniard after Rafael Nadal, Sergi Bruguera, Albert Costa, Carlos Moya, Juan Carlos Ferrero and Andreas Gimeno to win the Roland Garros title.
  • Alcaraz became the 1st man to win a Grand Slam after winning the semi-final and the final in 5 sets since Roger Federer at the 2017 Australian Open. Moreover, he became the youngest to win a Grand Slam on all 3 surfaces. He won the US Open 2023 on hard court, followed by the Wimbledon 2023 triumph on grass.

Sher-e-Punjab T20 Cup Held from June 10-27

  • The Shere-e-Punjab T20 Cup, organised by the Punjab Cricket Association is being held from June 10-27 at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali.
  • The tournament is being held in a double round-robin league format with four teams at the top of the table making the semi-finals.
  • Abhishek Sahrma, one of the key performers for IPL runner-up Sunrisers Hyderabad, is playing for Agri Knights Kings whereas Mumbai Indians' Nehal Wadhera will captain Trident Stallions.
  • Six teams, including defending champions BLV Blasters, are competing in this year's Sher-e-Punjab T20 Cup 2024 season.

French Open: Coco Gauff, Katerina Siniakova win Doubles Title

  • Coco Gauff ended her French Open campaign with a title as the American and her partner Katerina Siniakova won the women's doubles final at Roland Garros.
  • Gauff and Siniakova beat Italians Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 on Court Philippe-Chatrier, securing Gauff a first doubles trophy at a grand slam.
  • Gauff and Siniakova – who has now won eight major doubles titles, with three of those at the French Open – came together at the start of the tournament following Jessica Pegula's withdrawal due to injury, Gauff's usual doubles partner.
  • Roland-Garros, colloquially referred to as the French Open, is a major tennis tournament held over two weeks at the Stade Roland Garros in Paris, France, beginning in late May each year.
  • The French Open is the premier clay court championship in the world and the only Grand Slam tournament currently held on this surface. It is chronologically the second of the four annual Grand Slam tournaments, occurring after the Australian Open and before Wimbledon and the US Open.

To Decide Fate of World Chess Championship Host, Pollution a Factor: FIDE CEO Sutovsky on Delhi's...

  • The air pollution that New Delhi experiences annually in the final months of the year could be one of the factors in deciding whether India's capital hosts the upcoming World Chess Championship this year (2024), FIDE CEO Emil Sutovsky said. India's 18-year-old challenger Gukesh will take on reigning world champion Ding Liren in the World Chess Championship for a chance to become the youngest world champion ever in history.
  • Besides New Delhi, Chennai and Singapore are also in a three-city race to host the most prestigious event in chess. The world championship is scheduled to be held in November and December 2024 with the exact dates yet to be revealed.

Munich World Cup: Sift Wins Bronze in Tight Finish at WC

  • Indian shooter Sift Kaur Samra claimed the bronze medal in the women's 50m rifle 3 positions event after narrowly missing the silver at the ISSF World Cup (rifle/pistol).
  • Sift shot a 452.9 and missed silver by an agonising 0.1 to China's Han Jiayu.
  • The world No. 1 Seonaid McIntosh of the Great Britain won gold with a score of 466.7.

Another Race Walker Loses Olympics Mark

  • Another race walker who had registered the Paris Olympics qualifying standard in the 20km event has lost his qualifying mark. Suraj Panwar is the latest among three walkers who have now lost the qualified status. And what has raised eyebrows is the fact that all three, Suraj, Servin Sebastian and Arshpreet Singh, breached the qualifying mark at the Indian Open Race Walking Competition that was held in Chandigarh in January this year (2024).

World Cup: Sarabjot Shoots Gold Medal in Munich

  • Sarabjot Singh opened India's account at the ISSF World Cup in Munich, Germany with a gold medal in the men's 10m air pistol event, emerging triumphant in a field that featured a reigning world champion and a four-time Olympian.
  • He shot a 242.7 in the eight-man final, leaving behind his nearest competitor Bu Shuaihang of China by 0.2 points as Germany's Robin Walter won bronze.
