Zimbabwe World Record: Team Scores Highest Ever Total in T20I

  • Zimbabwe shattered the T20I world record by posting a massive total of 344 runs in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier against Gambia. This surpassed Nepal's previous record of 314, set against Mongolia during the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games.
  • Skipper Sikandar Raza led the charge with a blistering unbeaten knock of 133 from just 43 balls. Raza became the first Zimbabwean to hit a T20I century.
  • Zimbabwe then wrapped up the Gambia team in 54 runs, thereby winning the match by a margin of 290.

CWG 2026: Cricket, Hockey, Badminton and Wrestling Dropped from Mega Event

  • The next edition of the Commonwealth Games will be held in 2026 with a trimmed roster of 10 sports, following the exclusion of cricket, hockey, wrestling, badminton and shooting. Thus, the 23rd edition -- to be from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow, Scotland -- will be held without a number of sports in a bid to remain budget-friendly. This move is set to impact India's medal chances, who have been top contenders in sports such as cricket, badminton, hockey, etc.
  • The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) confirmed the reduction in the sporting events, with the Glasgow 2026 Games featuring a trimmed schedule. The 2022 edition was held with 19 sports in Birmingham. Sports like table tennis, squash, and road racing have also been excluded.

Magnus Carlsen to Play in Kolkata at the 6th Edition of the Tata Steel Chess India Tournament

  • World No 1 Magnus Carlsen will be in action in Kolkata in November at the 6th edition of the Tata Steel Chess India tournament where the Norwegian will take on some of the brightest Indian minds, including Arjun Erigaisi, R. Praggnanandhaa, Vidit Gujrathi, Nihal Sarin and SL Narayanan. The only notable miss from India's burgeoning chess contingent will be 18-year-old Gukesh.
  • This is the second time that the five-time world champion Magnus Carlsen will be in action at the Kolkata tournament after winning the event in 2019. Besides Carlsen and the five Indians, the other players in the 10-player field are Nodirbek Abdusattorov, Wesley So, Vincent Keymer and Daniil Dubov.
  • The Tata Steel Chess India tournament will be held from November 13 to 17 at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Kolkata's Alipore.

Karnataka Triumphs at 24th National Para-Swimming Championship

  • The 24th National Para-Swimming Championship concluded with Karnataka emerging as the overall champion, amassing an impressive 392 points. The competition saw a fierce battle for the top spots, with Maharashtra finishing a close second with 378 points, and Rajasthan securing third place with 248 points.
  • The event was organised by the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) and the Goa Paralympic Association.
  • A total of 518 swimmers competed, with 360 men and 158 women participants.

Railways Triumph over Indian Oil to Clinch Women's Hockey Title

  • Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB) won the 4th Senior Women Inter-Departmental National Hockey Championship by defeating Indian Oil 3-1 in the final, held at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium, New Delhi. This win avenges their loss in last year's (2023) summit clash. Indian Oil scored first in the 18th minute through Deepika, but Vandana Katariya equalised for Railways just a minute later. Railways took the lead in the fourth quarter, with captain Navneet Kaur scoring a crucial goal, followed by a final strike from Salima Tete, who was named Player of the Match. Central Board of Direct Taxes secured third place after overcoming Sports Authority of India.

Charles Leclerc Grabs Win at US Grand Prix

  • Charles Leclerc led Carlos Sainz home as Ferrari claimed a resounding one-two triumph in United States Grand Prix after Lando Norris was relegated to fourth, having finished third on track ahead of title rival Max Verstappen who took the third podium spot.

Strong Indian Contingent for World Bridge Games

  • A strong Indian contingent, led by Vinay Desai, is competing in all four categories of the 16th World Bridge Games being held in Buenos Aires from October 22 till November 3.
  • The contingent comprises several stalwarts, including 2018 Asian Games gold medallist in men's pairs Pranab Bardhan (seniors), Raju Tolani and Jaggy Shivdasani (Open category), among others.
  • A total of 34 countries are in the fray in the 'Open' section, while in the women's section, there are 24 nations.
  • An all-play-all round-robin takes place in Stage 1 with the qualifying teams to play in the round-of-16 knockout round.
  • The competition is being held in 'Open', seniors, women's and mixed categories.

Bala Devi Becomes First Indian Woman to Score 50 International Goals

  • Ngangom Bala Devi, born in February 1990, etched her name in Indian football history by becoming the first Indian woman to score 50 international goals. Playing as a forward for the Manipur Police and the Indian national team, Devi's journey reflects her dedication and significant contributions to women's football in India. Her 50 international goals achievement was celebrated following a goal against Pakistan in the 2024 SAFF Women's Championship, further solidifying her status as a trailblazer in Indian sports.
  • Her professional journey began with New Radiant WSC in the Maldives in 2014, and she later made headlines by signing with Rangers in Scotland, where she became the first Indian woman to score in a European professional league. After a stint in Spain with Málaga, she returned to India to join Odisha WFC.

Para Swimming Nationals: Simran, Sharanaya Win Gold Medals

  • Simran and Sharanaya claimed gold medals in the women's 50m backstroke S6 and S7 categories respectively on the second day of the 24th edition of the National Para Swimming Championship in Panaji, Goa. Simran clinched the gold with a time of 1:00.35, while Kabita of Odisha and Gajapriya of Tamil Nadu took the silver and bronze respectively in the 50m backstroke S6 class. Sharanaya claimed another gold for the state in the 50m backstroke S7 category with a time of 1:01.46, while Dimple of Rajasthan and Pankaja of Karnataka completed the podium.

India's Deepika Kumari Wins Sixth Archery World Cup Final Medal with Silver in Mexico

  • Indian archer Deepika Kumari won her sixth World Cup final medal. Kumari won the silver medal in the Archery World Cup final with a 0-6 loss against Chinese Li Jiaman in the final in Tlaxcala, Mexico.
  • In the semis, Kumari edged out Tokyo Olympics mixed team bronze medalist and Paris Olympics women's team bronze medallist Alejandra Valencia of Mexico 6-4. Kumari had scored a 6-0 win over Chinese Yang Xiaolei in the quarters.

New Zealand Wins ICC Women's T20 World Cup after 23 Years

  • New Zealand lifted the ICC Women's T20 World Cup after 23 years at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in United Arab Emirates. New Zealand defeated South Africa with 32 runs.
  • Amelia Kerr was named player of the series.

Arjun Erigaisi Wins WR Chess Masters, Nears 2800 Elo Rating

  • Indian Grandmaster Arjun Erigaisi showcased brilliant form and secured the WR Chess Masters title after defeating France's Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in an Armageddon game, following two draws in Classical chess. With this win, Arjun edged closer to the 2800 Elo rating mark, finishing with a live rating of 2796. Arjun defeated R. Praggnanandhaa in the semi-finals.

Hemang Badani Joins Delhi Capitals as New Head Coach

  • Delhi Capitals (DC) roped in former India batter Hemang Badani as its new head coach ahead of IPL 2025. While Badani replaced Ricky Ponting, ex-India cricketer Venugopal Rao succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the franchise's new director of cricket. DC also decided against renewing Praveen Amre's contract in a major revamp, who had served as the assistant coach and talent scout since 2014.
  • The DC's ownership took this call to overhaul the coaching staff and overall running structure of the franchise that is yet to win an IPL title.

Akhil Sheoran Secures Bronze at ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi

  • India's Akhil Sheoran clinched the bronze medal in the 50m Rifle 3 Positions event at the ISSF World Cup Final in New Delhi. In a high-pressure moment, Sheoran displayed remarkable composure and precision, making a decisive shot in the final round to finish third with a score of 452.6.
  • The gold medal was secured by Hungary's Istvan Peni with 465.3, while Jiri Privratsky from the Czech Republic claimed silver with 464.2.
