Arif Mohammad Khan Sworn In As 42nd Bihar Governor

  • Arif Mohammad Khan took the oath as Bihar's 42nd Governor at Rajendra Mandapam, Raj Bhavan.
  • Patna High Court Chief Justice Krishnan Vinod Chandran administered the oath of office and secrecy to Khan.
  • The ceremony was attended by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary and other ministers.
  • Khan, who previously served as Kerala Governor, succeeded Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar.

Rajasthan Decides to Dissolve 9 of the 17 Districts

  • BJP leader and former three-time Member of Parliament (MP) Devji M. Patel wrote a letter to Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma expressing his displeasure over taking away the status of the district of Sanchore.
  • The state government decided to dissolve 9 of the 17 districts created by the previous Congress dispensation, saying they were neither practical nor in the public interest.
  • Three new divisions were also dissolved in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhajan Lal Sharma. The state will now only have 7 divisions and 41 districts.
  • Several parts of Rajasthan witnessed protests after the BJP government decided to dissolve the status of nine districts and three divisions.

Bhuvnesh Kumar Assumes Charge as CEO of UIDAI

  • Bhuvnesh Kumar assumed charge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI.
  • Kumar also continues to be an Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
  • He took over from Amit Agrawal who was appointed as the new pharma secretary.
  • Kumar is an IAS officer of the 1995 batch from the Uttar Pradesh cadre.

India's First Glass Bridge Now Open in Kanniyakumari

  • Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, in presence of other political and cultural dignitaries including DMK MP Kanimozhi and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, unveiled India's first-ever glass bridge.
  • Located in Kanniyakumari, this major architectural marvel connects two iconic landmarks, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar statue. The bridge, part of a Rs. 37-crore initiative by the Tamil Nadu government adds to the region's tourism infrastructure, promising improved visual and travel experience for visitors.
  • The construction of the bridge was undertaken to enhance Kanniyakumari's appeal as a premier tourist destination. The inauguration coincided with the silver jubilee of the Thiruvalluvar statue's unveiling by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi.

Gujarat Government Splits Banaskantha to Create New District

  • The Gujarat government approved the bifurcation of Banaskantha district to create a new district.
  • The new Vav-Tharad district will have its headquarters in Tharad town.
  • With the formation of this new district, the number of districts in Gujarat will reach 34.
  • The decision to carve out a new district was taken in a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel in Gandhinagar.

G. D. Patel New President of Vishwa Gujarati Samaj

  • Gordhan D. Patel of Kota, Rajasthan, was elected as the President of Vishwa Gujarati Samaj, a global organisation dedicated to uniting Gujaratis worldwide and preserving the Gujarati language, culture and identity since 1990. G. D. Patel has been associated with the Vishwa Gujarati Samaj for over 30 years. He presently serves as its vice president.
  • He was declared elected unopposed by election officers Dr Praful Thakar and Abrar Ali Saiyed, as CK Patel, the current president, was found ineligible to contest as per the organisation's Constitution and election rules.

Haryana Hikes DCRG Limit by 25%

  • The Haryana government, under Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, made several significant decisions to enhance employee benefits, improve governance, and address public concerns. The decisions were announced after a state cabinet meeting, including increases in gratuity limits, updates to development charges policies, and reforms in public service exams.
  • The Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity (DCRG) limit for state government employees was raised by 25%.
  • New limit: Rs. 25 lakh (up from Rs. 20 lakh), effective January 1, 2025.
  • Judicial officers are also included in the gratuity enhancement.
  • Aim: To provide greater financial security to employees and their families.

Gujarat CM Launches SWAR Platform to Bridge Language Barriers

  • Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel launched the SWAR (Speech and Written Analysis Resource) platform, aiming to enhance communication and accessibility for citizens by overcoming language barriers. This citizen-centric initiative aligns with the state's continuous efforts to improve ease of living. The platform, developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology's Bhashini Team, leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to make government services more inclusive.
  • The platform utilizes Bhashini, an AI system, enabling seamless speech recognition, especially for citizens facing language or technical barriers.

PM Modi Chairs 45th PRAGATI Meeting to Review National Projects

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired the 45th meeting of PRAGATI, an ICT-based platform aimed at ensuring the timely implementation of government initiatives through collaboration between the Central and State governments.
  • During the session, eight projects were reviewed, including six Metro Urban Transport projects and one project each focusing on road connectivity and thermal power. The total cost of these projects, spanning various states and union territories, exceeds Rs. 1 lakh crore.
  • The Prime Minister underscored the impact of project delays, citing cost escalations and delays in public access to the intended benefits. He called for enhanced efficiency at both Central and State levels to minimise delays.
  • The meeting also covered public grievances in the banking and insurance sectors. PM Modi acknowledged the reduced time in grievance resolution but called for attention to the quality of disposals.

Former Suzuki Motor Chairman Osamu Suzuki Passes Away

  • Osamu Suzuki, former chairman of Japan's Suzuki Motor, died. He was 94 years old. Suzuki led the company for more than 40 years, until he stepped down as chairman in 2021, transforming the Shizuoka-based company into a global automaker.

Arvind Kejriwal Inducts Bodybuilders, Wrestlers in AAP Ahead of Delhi Polls

  • Several sportspersons, including wrestlers and bodybuilders, joined the AAP in the presence of party chief Arvind Kejriwal, giving a boost to the party ahead of the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls.
  • Kejriwal welcomed Tilakraj, Rohit Dalal and Akshay Dilawari, who are associated with sports and fitness, at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) office and handed party scarves and caps to them.

Centre Forms Tribunal to Review ULFA's Status

  • The Centre set up an Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Tribunal to determine whether there is sufficient cause to declare the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), including all its factions, wings and front organisations, as an unlawful association.
  • The tribunal is headed by Justice Michael Zothankhuma of the Gauhati High Court.
  • The MHA decided to constitute the tribunal almost a month after it extended the ban on the ULFA for the next five years for its role in continuing to work to secede Assam from India and maintain links with other insurgent groups for extortion and violence.
