Jaspal Rana, Deepali Deshpande Return to National Coaching Setup

  • Dronacharya Awardee coach Deepali Deshpande and Manu Bhaker's coach Jaspal Rana returned to the national shooting coaching setup, announced NRAI.
  • In the governing body meeting of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), the body decided to appoint Deepali Deshpande as the head coach of rifle and Jaspal Rana as the high-performance coach of 25m pistol.
  • In all, a total of 16 new members were appointed to the coaching team, with 19 being retained, including one coordinator (Amar Jung Singh) and two coaches (Priti Sharma and Anuja Jung) for Deaf Shooters.

The 23rd National Para Athletics Championships in Chennai

  • The 23rd National Para Athletics Championship commenced at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai, marking a historic first for the city. The prestigious event, held from February 17 to 20, is being actively supported by the Tamil Nadu Government and organised under the guidance of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who also serves as the State Minister for Sports.
  • The championship has drawn impressive 1,476 para-athletes from across India, competing in 155 events under 30 teams, making it one of the largest para-athletics gatherings in the country.

Jacob Kiplimo Breaks Half-Marathon World Record in Barcelona

  • Ugandan runner Jacob Kiplimo made history in Barcelona by shattering the world half-marathon record. Kiplimo, who reclaimed the title he held in 2021, set a new record by finishing the 21.0975 km race in an astounding 56 minutes and 42 seconds. This performance was a remarkable 48 seconds faster than the previous world record, set by Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha in November 2024. Kiplimo's extraordinary achievement is being hailed as the greatest single improvement in the men's world half marathon record in history.

Manu Bhaker Named BBC Sportswoman of the Year

  • Indian shooter Manu Bhaker was honoured as the BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year, following a remarkable campaign at the Paris Olympics 2024, where she secured two historic bronze medals. Her performances cemented her status as one of India's finest sporting talents, making her the first Indian female shooter to win multiple medals at a single Olympic Games.
  • Manu Bhaker edged out a strong field of nominees to claim the prestigious award. The other contenders for the honour included golfer Aditi Ashok, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, India women's cricket vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, and wrestler Vinesh Phogat—all of whom have been exceptional ambassadors of Indian sports on the global stage.

National Games 2025: Services Tops with 68 Gold Medals

  • The 38th edition of the National Games 2025 was held in Uttarakhand with 28 states, eight union territories and the Services Sports Control Board (SSCB) participating. The tournament which started on January 26, came to an end on February 14.
  • Services topped the standings with 121 medals - 68 gold, 26 silver and 27 bronze. Maharashtra with 201 medals (54 gold, 71 silver, 76 bronze) came second and Haryana with 153 medals (48 gold, 47 silver and 58 bronze) occupied the third spot in the medals tally. Host Uttarakhand finished seventh with 24 gold medals.
  • Nagaland, Puducherry and Sikkim failed register a gold medal in the competition.

Maharashtra Win Sub Junior National Rugby Sevens Championships 2024

  • The Sub Junior Girls team from Maharashtra emerged winners, beating seasoned champions, Bihar at the 9th Sub Junior National Rugby Sevens Championships 2024 held at Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) in Madhya Pradesh's Gwalior.
  • Maharashtra beat Bihar 17-5 in the finals with pivotal help from Shravani Patil who was the top scorer of the championship.
  • This event marked a significant milestone for Indian Rugby, with the introduction of contact rugby for the Sub-Junior cohort of players (U15). This gradual transition from touch rugby to contact rugby is consistent with the federation's ambition to strengthen the Indian national age-grade teams, as they lock horns against teams at the Asian frontier.

Bangladesh's Shohely Akhter Becomes First Woman Cricketer Banned by ICC for Corruption

  • In a historic yet unfortunate incident, Bangladesh's Shohely Akhter became the first woman cricketer to be banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for corruption charges. She was found guilty of attempting to fix matches during the 2023 Women's T20 World Cup and has been handed a five-year ban from all forms of cricket.
  • The ICC's Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) found that Shohely Akhter violated five provisions of the ICC Anti-Corruption Code. She admitted to the charges and accepted the five-year ban, with effect from February 10, 2025.

Rajasthan Royals Appoint Sairaj Bahutule as Spin Bowling Coach

  • Rajasthan Royals appointed former India all-rounder Sairaj Bahutule as spin bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2025 season.
  • Bahutule returned to the Royals having been a part of the setup from 2018-21. A stalwart in Indian domestic cricket, Bahutule has an impressive record of over 630 wickets and 6,000 runs in first-class cricket. Bahutule played for India in two Tests and eight ODIs and has since transitioned into a successful coaching career. He has mentored teams such as Mumbai, Bengal, Kerala and the Indian national men's team.

RCB Announces Rajat Patidar as Captain for IPL 2025

  • Royal Challengers Bengaluru announced batter Rajat Patidar as their new captain for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League. After the mega auctions in December last year (2024), it was likely that former skipper and star batter Virat Kohli will don the captain's hat again. However, few reports emerged which stated that Kohli himself opted out of the captaincy race. Patidar was among RCB's retained players before last year's mega auction and has the experience of leading Madhya Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (ODI).

Warrican, Mooney Shine as ICC Players of the Month

  • The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the Players of the Month for January 2025, recognising Jomel Warrican (West Indies) and Beth Mooney (Australia) for their outstanding performances. Warrican's brilliant spin bowling played a crucial role in West Indies' historic Test victory in Pakistan, earning him his maiden ICC Men's Player of the Month award. Meanwhile, Mooney's explosive batting was instrumental in Australia's dominant Ashes triumph, securing her the ICC Women's Player of the Month title.
