Switzerland Crowned as Best Country in the World

  • In a new survey which is called "Best countries for 2024" Switzerland was crowned as the best country in the world. Switzerland achieved this fate in the third year successively. This survey included 89 countries for the results.
  • European countries made up the majority of the top 25
  • In the ranking, Switzerland is followed by Japan, the United States of America, Canada and Australia
  • Only Japan, Singapore, China and South Korea managed to the top 25 from Asia
  • The United Arab Emirates and Qatar were the only two Middle-Eastern countries that got the 17 and 25th positions in the survey.

ICA General Assembly and the Global Cooperative Conference 2024

  • The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) is set to hold its General Assembly and Global Cooperative Conference in India for the first time in 130 years, from November 25-30, 2024. The event theme, 'Cooperatives Build Prosperity for All', aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of 'Sahkar se Samriddhi', which translates to prosperity through cooperation. This important event will also mark the beginning of the UN International Year of Cooperatives in 2025.
  • This conference is a big deal for India because it will help boost its position in the global cooperative movement. Cooperatives in India will showcase their products and services in a special marketplace called a 'Haat,' designed to look like traditional Indian villages. To commemorate the event, a special stamp will also be released for the International Year of Cooperatives.

Arab World's First Nuclear Plant

  • The United Arab Emirates successfully completed the Arab world's first nuclear power plant, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant, the state-owned Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) said.
  • According to ENEC, the four-reactor plant will provide 25 percent of the electricity required by the hot, desert Gulf state, where air-conditioning is widespread—approximately equivalent to New Zealand's annual electricity consumption.
  • It will also power major industries such as oil production, steel manufacturing, and aluminum production.
  • The Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is situated in Al Dhafra, within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi on the Arabian Gulf, about 53 km west-southwest of the city of Ruwais.
  • Emirati President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan hailed the completion as a significant step towards achieving net zero emissions.

Abdelmadjid Tebboune Re-elected As Algeria's President

  • President Abdelmadjid Tebboune was named the winner of Algeria's presidential election, granting him another term leading the gas-rich North African nation.
  • Tebboune, who's seen as close to Algeria's powerful military, secured 94.7% of ballots in the contest against two other candidates.
  • With the outcome of the vote in little doubt, strong participation was seen as key to maintaining a sense of legitimacy for the 78-year-old leader, who came to power in 2019 against the backdrop of mass youth-driven protests that forced his veteran predecessor Abdelaziz Bouteflika to resign.

EAM Attends First India-GCC Foreign Ministers Meet in Riyadh

  • Jaishankar attended the first India–Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Foreign Ministers' meeting in Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, on September 8-9. During the visit, he also held bilateral meetings with Foreign Ministers from GCC member countries.
  • According to Ministry of External Affairs, India and the GCC enjoy a deep and multifaceted relationship, in areas including political, trade & investment, energy cooperation, cultural and people – to – people ties. The GCC region has emerged as a major trading partner for India and is home to a large Indian expatriate community, numbering around 8.9 million.

India and UNESCO Co-Organise 2024 Chief Science Advisers Roundtable in Paris

  • The 2024 Edition of the Chief Science Advisers' Roundtable -CSAR was organised at the headquarters of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) in Paris, France. This roundtable was co-organised by the Office of Principal Scientific Adviser to the Indian Government and the Natural Sciences Sector of UNESCO. CSAR was conceptualised and launched as a Sherpa-track initiative during Indian G20 Presidency last year (2023).
  • Delegations of 28 countries and six international organisations joined the round-table. They discussed on the theme 'Fostering open science, bridging knowledge asymmetry, and building science advice capacity globally'. The roundtable was co-chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the India Government, Prof. Ajay Kumar Sood and the Assistant Director General-ADG – Natural Sciences of UNESCO, Dr. Lidia Brito.
