Sweden becomes the 32nd member of the NATO

  • The NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), also called the North Atlantic Alliance, is an intergovernmental military alliance of 32 member states – 30 European and two North American.
  •  Sweden became the 32nd member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) 2024 after completing its accession process in Washington. Sweden's application to join NATO came two years after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine raised security concerns. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said that Sweden's accession makes NATO stronger, Sweden safer, and the whole Alliance more secure.

Bangladesh PM pitches for common currency for Muslim countries

  • The proposal was made during a meeting with a delegation from D-8, consisting of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
  •  Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina proposed the idea of introducing a common currency among Muslim countries.

Pak Punjab Gets First Sikh Minister in Ramesh Singh Arora

  • Ramesh Singh Arora (48), a legislator from Narowal, became the first from the minority Sikh community to take oath as a minister in the Punjab province of Pakistan on Wednesday.
  • A three-time Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) from Narowal, Arora took oath as a minister in the Cabinet of recently sworn-in Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) Chief Minister Maryam Nawaf Sharif, daughter of former Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The ceremony was held at the Governor's House in Lahore.

Nepal PM 'Prachanda' Forges New Alliance with Ex-premier Oli's Party

  • Nepal's Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' formed a new alliance with former premier K. P. Sharma Oli's party after terminating its nearly 15-month partnership with the Nepali Congress due to differences between the top leadership.
  • Prachanda became the Prime Minister for the third term with the support of the Nepali Congress on December 25, 2022.
  • The rift between the Maoist Centre and Nepali Congress grew after differences grew between Nepali Congress leader and Finance Minister Mahat and Prachanda over the issue of budget allocation to certain projects.

France Becomes First Country in the World to Make Abortion a Constitutional Right

  • France enshrined the right to abortion in its Constitution after lawmakers voted in favour of an article which would give women the guaranteed freedom to get the medical procedure for terminating a pregnancy, making it the first country in the world to do so.
  • A joint session of both the Lower and Upper Houses of parliament was convened at the Palace of Versailles where the proposal gained a three-fifths supermajority by French lawmakers, which was needed to make the change, with 780 votes in favour and 72 against it.

Shehbaz Sharif Elected Pakistan's Prime Minister for Second Term

  • Pakistan's newly formed parliament elected Shehbaz Sharif as Prime Minister for a second time, three weeks after uncertain national elections caused delays in the formation of a coalition government.
  • He beat Omar Ayub, the candidate backed by jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who secured 92 votes. Sharif returned to the role he held until August when parliament was dissolved ahead of the elections and a caretaker government took over. No single party won enough seats to form government on their own.

Alexander Stubb Assumes Finnish Presidency

  • Alexander Stubb was sworn in as the President of Finland, taking over from longtime former President Sauli Niinistö who served 16 years at the helm. The leadership transition came in a new era after becoming a NATO member — something he will demonstrate by making his first foreign trip to inspect the military alliance's drill in neighbouring Norway's Arctic region.
